My friend is 15 (so I'm I lmao) and she really wants to teach English in Japan. She just love Japan, anime and basically everything about the country. She's very friendly and full of life, she would be a great teacher and I fully support her decision if that's the path she wants to take.

Many foreigners come here because just to be a native is enough to be a teacher, in many places without a teaching masters or title you can become a teacher

I've visted a friend in Seoul twice. Some thoughts: -you will be looked at and stared at by a lot of people, may be given mean looks -kpop. okay every kpop stand I saw there were hardly any koreans, it was mostly Chinese tourists..I went 1 of the department stores at DDP and on the top floor was "kpop" and did I see mass crowds of girls?! NO...I literally saw 4 Koreans... If your're going to Korea in search of guys kpop idols looking...you will be disappointed... most look like nerds..but then again you probably already brainwashed into thinking everything you see on drams/kpop shows is like that in real life Seoul...its not. - You gotta be aware crossing streets or you might get run over. Drivers here are THE WORST...no one follows signs or driving rules (cars driving on bus only lanes, not stopping at a red light (instead drivers try to go as far forwards as they can which they block 80% of the crosswalk, countless others examples...) - no one smiles, people look depressed - as said in the video..people will talk about you (workers at a restaurant, stores, etc) - some taxi drivers will try to get more money out of you by taking a slightly longer route ( even with my korean speaking friend, once the driver hears them speaking English even if they speak Korean fluently the driver may try to take advantage) - the majority of kpop idols have done some sort of plastic surgery (including guys)

You are right, im only 15 n I actually do want to go to Korea to genuinely teach. Even though I don't have much intention to teach in my country, I always hated my second language teachers...I always thought of ways they could have done better, and I kinda want to be the teacher that gets it. And there is that plus of going to another country and the culture and all. But I also really wanna learn korean.
Velvet Kookie (1 year ago)
But really It's because salary is bigger than my country HAHAHAHAHA But seriously Korea is Nice place but i'd rather stick to my country HAHAHAHAHA If you think all of them are nice people especially to foreigners think twice well mostly are nice but some are not. (i've experienced it okay) And they talk about you in korean oh yes some do and funny thing they were talking bad stuffs about mah friend and fortunately i understand a little korean and i was like "oh is that so?" and they said sorry so i'm cool with it now.

Ryuuinjapan (1 year ago)
Because... It's the easiest way to move to Korea like; if you come in Korea as a white people and apply for normal jobs; they just won't employ you bcs of the physical type and if you come as someone who lived in America etc... they will take you and it's so much easier to get a visa by this

Reasons you must teach in Korea 1. You never shot by your students. 2. You are just the medicine to ease foreigner-phobia, so don't work hard. 3. Student cares grade which is on your hands.

Americans don't take school seriously I don't know anyone who cared about their grades till it came down to tests & I literally just did my homework and didn't try and graduated top 10% of 800 students now I tutor middle schoolers and it's sad how our 8th graders typically have a fifth grade reading level only seriously it's so sad and parents don't help at all so I can see how being a teacher in Korea is desirable compared to American bc it's ideal to typically teach a student who actually wants to learn or will try more than us half ass americans

Don't teach in Korea if you have the mindset that it is going to be a free vacation. I am a hagwon teacher, and I feel so tired and worn out when the workday is over. This isn't going to be an easy road to walk down.

the only reason i would want to teach in korea is to show korean students how american teachers teach. i mean, whenever we have a foreign teacher in america, they teach like how it is in their country (which can be good and bad) and its always weird/ cool to experience another culture in a classroom. so if i ever went to teach their, thatd probably be why.

I think people want to teach in Korea as it's an easy way to get a visa and live there (stalk all the kpop idols and marry them) and personally i have thought about it but..... i hate school and if i go back even as a teacher i would probably kill myself so that idea went out the window as fast as it came through the door if ya get me. I will just go as a photographer and find a way to stay long term if i want to, like yea, was just telling you bcs you actually wanted to know about my life
bueaty3656 (2 years ago)
I am one of the dreamless kids yeah!!!! (idk if that yeah was scarcastic or genuine but yeah) coming from an asian culture myself i know how much pressure students get and my mum was a teacher for a few years of my childhood and when that happened my thoguths of being a teacher got washed out the window it is wayyyyyyyyyy too much stress and the expectations are crazy. Even though i live in the west and my mum was brought up here i have plenty of people around me who weren't so i feeel the pressure korean students have (well i did until i gave up caring about my education lol) So yeah good luck to those that want to be a teacher in korea because your in for a crazy ride.

It really pisses me off how some people only want to go teach in Korea because they want to experience the "culture." Umm, we all know that Kdramas and kpop is the reason why you want to go there and teaching is the one of the easiest ways of getting to live there for a long while. And it sometimes pisses me off that there's a chance that a person like that could get the job over someone who genuinely wants to teach. 🙄
Lloyd James (1 year ago)
Agreed. Its shameful. Not only do you potentially ruin a kid's education, you could hurt the reputation of English teachers over there

Leonie K. (2 years ago)
I used to want to teach in Korea, because I found the lifestyle and the difference to Switzerland (well known city to a rather insignificant city) rather intruiging, but I found out that because I don't live in an English speaking country, even though my mother tongue is English, I wouldn't be allowed to go teach in Korea and I lost interest in teaching in Korea. I honestly have nothing against people that want to go teach in Korea, because it's always good to gain experience, but I agree with many things you (directed at Dylan) said in the video, that you should really go there to teach, not to try and immerse yourself in the culture really. That would make you a bad teacher in my opinion. However, this is honestly just my opinion. Have a nice day 😊

I am a teacher in Korea and this is my 3rd year here. In my experience, I love it here. Korea is the best country for ESL teacher. They provide you everything, free housing, free flight to Korea, health insurance, etc. Private academies provide them as well. (I am a hagwon teacher) So when you are looking for ESL teaching jobs in foreign countries and compare the benefits, Korea is the number one choice. Korea is not perfect, Just as all countries are not perfect, but it's pretty good living in here. Except if your reason of coming here is kpop, if that's your reason you need to grow up a little. You don't move to a different country just because some artists... That's sad.

I first got interested in the korean culture because of Kpop but then when i found out about the ESL programs i got very interseted because i like foreign languages and I've always thought of teaching as an option for me and with the TEFL it is a very quick and easy way to achieve that. Hopefully in a few years after I graduate high school, finish college and get my TEFL certificate i will be able to go to Korea

I think the main reason so many foreigners want to teach in Corea is because Corea has such high standards compared to the USA. In Corea drug use is extremely rare. Crime is a fraction of what it is in America. Coreans love America and Americans. They are forever grateful to the USA for liberating them after WW2 from decades of Japanese occupation. They are grateful that America saved them from the North Corean Communist dictators in the Corean War. The USA continues to defend Corea today. Unlike many Americans, most Coreans are very respectful and polite. Corean food is great. Corea has a fascinating 5000 year history and culture. It's not surprising that Americans love Corea and want to teach there.

tanzanable Really, i had no idea, learnt sth important here!
tanzanable (2 years ago)
Sorry if the "C" spelling makes you cringe. A dear friend from a small farming village in the C(K)orean countryside died a few months ago at the age of 102. She lived through the horror of the 35 year long brutal Japanese occupation from 1910 to 1945. She told many stories detailing the brutality that she and many others were forced to endure during those years. It was that brutal Japanese government at that time that changed the spelling from the "C" to the "K" rendering. Out of respect for her and ALL Coreans around the world I proudly choose to use the more historical and politically correct "Corea" spelling.
Andrea Jerausek (2 years ago)
Dude you are right, it can be spelled either way. However, that way of spelling Korea honestly makes me cringe XD . Also, based on what I read on the internet; don't you think "Corea" is a bit obsolete? Also may I ask what influenced you to chose to choose "Corea" over "Korea"? I'm just curious, sorry if my questions make you feel like you are being interrogated.
tanzanable (2 years ago)
Andrea - It's not a misspelling. Although both the "C" and the "K" renderings are acceptable,  "Corea" is the more historically correct spelling. Other than a few English speaking nations, most countries use the "Corea" spelling. Here's why: http://www.goldsea.com/Air/Issues/Corea/corea.html

Teen suicides in Corea are no higher than in other developed nations. Corean suicide rates are sky high because of rampant elder suicides. Corean seniors kill themselves at 10 times the rate of Corean young people. It's a very sad crisis there: http://www.economist.com/news/asia/21591211-loneliness-and-poverty-are-killers-poor-spirits http://www.calvin.edu/chimes/2013/04/05/suicide-rates-high-among-south-korean-elderly/

I'm not a teenager, but I am planning on teaching in Korea - because I want to teach. I love the English language, and I love learning other languages. Not because I can't get a better job either (I've got a degree in Neuroscience). But I enjoy teaching much more, and I am not cut out for working in a lab. I want to be one of those good teachers that you talk about - one who cares about the students, and wants students to learn beyond memorization and care about what they're learning. And South Korea is the best place to do that. Teachers are treated and paid terribly in the US, and besides that I have spent all of my college years wanting to go to (or go back to) East Asia. I definitely think there will be a lot of things that are hard, but hopefully having a reasonable mindset will make it easier.
Alivia Marie (2 years ago)
I hear so many scary things about the Korean education system. I have decided to pursue becoming an English teacher in Korea not because of the culture, but in order to give the students there suffering through their everyday classes a period of time where they don't feel so pressured. I have had a few very good teachers who I've felt 100% comfortable talking to about my problems and the things that stress me out. I want to bring that experience to the students of Korea and give them the same experience I had. I know I could do this in any country (including my own), but I think since learning English is such an important thing to students in Korea, having a foreign English teacher who they can trust and doesn't pressure them with exams and homework would be a great way to open their minds and prevent horrible things such as suicide and depression. This video really made me thing about the real reasons why I want to be an English teacher in Korea so thank you so much :) I love you and your videos <3
