Great information. I love the revision history. Is it only available in Google docs or in both spreadsheet and slide also
Reginald Marselus (18 days ago)
Hi Steve, What I like about Google Docs; the docs don't become "un-open-able" like Microsoft Word does for some of its documents. Word can put up a warning, can't open this, or can't find this, or can't fix corrupted file. Google docs doesn't do that (that I know of) all the best

For google docs sync so you can use off line, google only syncs google docs, google spreadsheets, google whatever etc not ALL your GDrive files, so if you have say pictures or videos in your GDrive these will ALSO show in the indicator of how much space your GDrive files are using in the GDrive cloud storage but these will not be sync'd to your local drive so dottotech was a little wrong there I think.. most google docs etc will use up very little local hard drive space - it is videos that take up the vast majority of storage these days, followed by photos... text takes up almost no storage when we are talking about gigabytes! btw I am a fan of dottotech, he's got some really clear well informed and very useful videos - I find I always learn something from them.

Hey Steve, Just found your vid. As a fellow techie I have to say this is soooo awesome! Your breakdown was so on point and simple to understand but at the same time made me think of other cool things I could start doing with this in my workflows or just other nerdy things I do on the side. Thanks again and I look forward to more vids and will check out your past content :). Have a great one!
Liked it, specially the "Publishing Documents to the Web" feature.

Hello, Sir. I am a book nerd and downloaded a lot of books from the internet. I don't know if they are copyrighted or not. I stored my books on google drive. Will there be a problem about that issue?
dottotech (1 month ago)
I don't think so, if you share the books publicly you may be exposed.

Thank you, Steve. Very helpful! I've gone to the Chrome Webstore and cannot find Google Docs Offline by doing a search. Thankfully, you have published the link here. My question; how would I have found this extension (or any others) had you not provided us with the direct link? It appears I may be missing other extensions that might be promising.

Just wanted to let you know that I've had the bell that sends me notifications when you post a new video checked for quite a while now, but it seemed to magically un-check itself today! I re-checked it when I noticed. Perhaps you might want to remind people to occasionally verify that the little bell is still checked so they don't lose notifications from your channel. :-)

Thanks Steve. I'm just trying to learn to use Google Drive. I'd like to see you do a video about how to put files on Google Drive & how to sync.

Your video time stamps are great! I can browse through the video and find relevant info that I would be interested in. (It's superior to time stamps in the description). For example, nothing really related to me, until the mobile app part of the video. So I started watching there. Saved me some time.

great video ! just a real noob question i think... i've got a big expanding Ogg Vorbis library, and want to have a "multimedia" player on the go. i'm about to get a chromebook to do this, but how does Drive work? do i need drive with a chromebook? or get me a cheap usb stick and stream from that???
Maximus Heronimus (2 months ago)
my library is just shy of 280GB.... i guess a portable SSD would be a nice addition to a chromebook i guess
dottotech (2 months ago)
I guess it depends on how large your library is, and how good your internet connection is. You are going to have to test it out!

My favorite Google Drive feature is the ability to share links to your files for anyone to see. That saves SO MUCH trouble. If I create a video, rather than having to send it as a file in an email and wait FOREVER while it attaches to an email, I can create a link out of it from Google Drive and just send people to that. I use that feature constantly.
Jesse Stevenson (3 months ago)
My Google Drive says 74GB of 200GB used :p I pay $30 per year for the 200GB of Google Drive space. I basically have the entire content of the hard drive of my old Dell desktop (the computer I had before I saw the light and switched to Chromebooks) saved there. Thanks for the great video!

Steve, automatic substitution is great in Google Docs, although I use Ms Word as word-processor. Can I have automatic substitution in Gmail? I usually write in Afrikaans. Can I download a spell checker for Afrikaans in gmail?
Alvaro Pena (3 months ago)
since you mentioned google docs a few times, it's important for users to know that ANY documents created on google docs are the property of Alphabet (parent company of google). They own the rights to your creative works- FYI.
dottotech (3 months ago)
wrong. Google's terms of service As our Terms of Service state, "You retain ownership of any intellectual property rights that you hold in that content. In short, what belongs to you stays yours." We do not claim ownership in any of your content, including any text, data, information, and files that you upload, share, or store in your Drive account. What our Terms of Service do is enable us to give you the services you want — so if you decide to share a document with someone, or want to open it on a different device, we can provide that functionality. You control who can access your files in Drive. We will not share your files and data with others except as described in our Privacy Policy. We will not change a Private document into a Public one. We will not use a Private document for marketing or promotional campaigns. We will keep your data only as long as you ask us to keep it. You can take your data with you if you choose to stop using Google Drive.

I would like to call myself a wordsmith, and therefore use Ms Word. I use about 19 text editing macros; an auto-correct file with maybe over a thousand entries which I developed over years; and carefully developed styles (for instance, I use Calibri Light as my default font). But like most people, I am irked by Microsoft's infamous user unfriendliness. I exchanged Ms Outlook for Google Mail, even though I now have to do without my Ms Word auto-correct file which also functioned in Ms Outlook. I wish G-mail would allow auto-correcting! I am discovering more and more handy Gmail text editing features as I go. I find the handy calendar side-bar in G-Mail delightful! And I somehow always have the email address I need when composing a new message: G-Mail auto-fills it much better than Outlook! Thank you, Steve, for telling me about Google Docs' autocorrect capabilities. My advice to anyone who often uses Google Docs or Ms Word: Build your own auto-correct file. You will be surprised how much time and effort you save by eliminating frequent typo's, automating much-used phrases (for instance, 'lm' for 'Ladies and Gentlemen,'). I mostly write in Afrikaans, which has a plethora of diacritical signs like ê, ë. I could not sync my mobile with Win10. Now I have synced my mobile with Google Calendar, which is wonderful! I use Trello's to do (task managing) capabilities in conjunction with G-mail's 'My Tasks' (And My Tasks syncs with Calendar on my computer as well as on my mobile. Wow!). I have also saved my work documents in Google Drive. Microsoft's One Drive somehow was not kind to me. I am impressed with what you told me about Google Drive 'dynamic file' option, and will probably use it in the future. Thank you, Steve!

Hi Steve, I’ve been watching your content for a long time now and it has been very helpful to me. I’ve noticed you don’t really make videos on Microsoft products, do you prefer google over Microsoft if so why ?
dottotech (3 months ago)
I just don't have time to cover all the products that deserve it. So I decided to focus on Google Apps.

@dottotech For offline use, just install google backup and sync, then you can access google drive through your computers file browser. edit offline and then it syncs when back online.

Thanks, Steve, and to repeat others, it was great as usual. I have an off topic question for you. What app do you use to broadcast your iPhone to your PC/MAC (especially PC)? I use an iPad occasionally for demos and haven't found a good app yet. Android has a bazillion of them that work very well but I have not found teh hidden jewel for iPhones...yet.
dottotech (3 months ago)
I think you can use Camtasia on a PC to do it.

Hi Steve Thanks for introducing me to Google Forms - an excellent resource. I have set up a questionnaire to get feedback on a recent trip. This is to go out to multiple email addresses. In Gmail, to hide email addresses from the recipient list, you can use the Bcc trick, either for individuals or Groups. But how do you do the same in Forms? There does not appear to be a Bcc field. I know that you can put in a link for the form in a standard Gmail email, but that requires two operations by the recipient - click the link and fill in the questionnaire - I want the questionnaire to pop up straight away; more chance of getting it completed. Any thoughts? BTW - I thought that I was teh only person who always types teh .....

Hi Steve, how the fuck are you doing this fine day? To tell you frankly, I have 5 google drive accounts . For me the only drawback is: You can only upload AND later download files if you are in .../drive/u/0/my-drive... If you have several drives open, drives .../drive/u/[1 to x]/my-drive...well, replace the 0 by anything greater than 0, then you can upload but not download. If you want to be able to download the drive url must say: .../drive/u/0/my-drive...

I use OneDrive for all of that

Steve I like how you added a bit more structure to your video with wipe screen and summary list at the end!! (I would suggest perhaps making the wipe faster with only one sound effect, but either way is is nice. )

ONE thing you need to know to get more out of Google drive... GET RID OF GOOGLE DRIVE. [Get rid of Google altogether if possible. Believe me, IT AIN'T EASY. They own so much of our lives it is absolutely terrifying.] Totally insecure and yet another "free" way for Google to hoover up every single bit of your information and life. Steer clear.

Great stuff as always, Steve. I personally use GDrive extensively and have done so for many years; I actually have stopped using MS Office altogether thanks to GDrive. One pro tip which I think is incredibly powerful is that with public links, one can generate automatic donwloads, copies to another Drive account and even format conversion - right from the document's URL. This is inmensly useful for folks who publish content through a blog, webpage or other online platform. For example, you may have an original Google Doc that you want folks to download as a PDF from your website. Simply, get the public link, change the ending to "export?format=pdf" and add it to a download button on the website. Need to update the content? Just edit the Google Doc and folks always download the most recent version from your site as a PDF. I use this a lot with online courses and it saves me hundreds of file verions and format duplicates.

My personal TIP is to STOP using Google Drive for anything serious. Dropbox works so much better, I am finding Google Drive slow to update, some files and folders do NOT update and Google Drives load on CPU during updating is HUGE
Mike Johnson (4 months ago)
Glad it works for you - but It does NOT work so well for me and I find Dropbox to work better
Brian Prows (4 months ago)
Mike Johnson My school uses Google. I have drive stream and google sync for my private account on a windows 10 laptop. Works fine Saving to Dropbox makes no sense.
Brian Prows (4 months ago)
Wolf Carter Drive Stream works fast for me.
Mike Johnson (4 months ago)
You can still use Google Docs just save to Dropbox after creating them. Or, leave them on Google Drive for sharing, etc. Just don't keep all your files on Google Drive or use Google Drive backup feature. I find it AWFUL. I also use Apache Open Office 4 on my PC - they work great -- http://www.openoffice.org Apache OpenOffice is an open-source office productivity software suite. It is one of the successor projects of OpenOffice.org and the designated successor of IBM Lotus Symphony.
Brian Prows (4 months ago)
But Dropbox is for storage. There’s no Dropbox Docs, Sheets and Slides. What cloud programs are you using with Dropbox?
Patrick Unson (4 months ago)
Google Drive offline was the most intriguing! All tips still appreciated.
