Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL Download our exclusive 10-Point WP Hardening Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist Update WordPress Core, WordPress Plugins & Themes | WP Learning Lab One of the best ways to keep your WordPress site safe from security breaches and hackers is to update the WordPress core files, plugins and themes whenever updates are available. Before you update anything you should make a backup of your WordPress files and your WordPress MySQL database. You should do this just in case something goes wrong, which happens from time to time. The learning curve to how to update WordPress manually is quite low. You'll know when it's time to upgrade WordPress because you'll see an alert box at the top of the every admin page on your website that says you can update to the latest WordPress version. You will see a link in the alert box that says "Please update now." Click that link to go to the update page. On the update page you can click on the blue Update Now button or you can download the file package and update WordPress manually. In this tutorial we're only covering the easy update method using the Update Now button. Once you click the Update Now button WordPress will work it's magic and update all relevant files. It will also tell you if anything went wrong during the Wordpress upgrade, which is quite rare these days. To update themes all you have to do is hover over Appearance and then click on Themes. Any themes that have an update available will have an orange banner over their tile and text saying Update Available. You then click on Theme Details and you will see a blue link with the text Update Theme. Click on that to start the theme updating process. It is just as quick and painless as updating the WordPress core files. To update your plugins all you need to do is click on the Plugins link in the left hand admin menu. Any plugins that have an update available will have an orange background. To update a plugin simply click on the Update link below the plugin description. Depending on your WordPress version the update will happen without taking you to another page. If you are taken to another page then you have to click on the Update button on that page. Plugin updates are also quick and painless, but essential for your site's security. Just make sure before you do any updates that you have a backup of your WordPress site files and database just in case something goes wrong. I hope this information helps you! http"//justusewordpress.com WordPress plug-ins fail from time to time and will not update automatically. How do you get the new plug-in information on to your server? If you're going through the dashboard of WordPress and the plug-in will not automatically update unfortunately you will have to go back to your Go Daddy account and login to the FTP server. FTP stands for file transfer protocol. Now without using an FTP client you can login to Go Daddy and use their FTP file manager this enables you to upload a zip file of your current plug-in version. Once the current plug-in is uploaded to your server you can go back into your WordPress dashboard and activate the plug-in. This makes it simple and easy to keep your plug-ins up-to-date.

Download the plugin ➜ https://websitelearners.com/get/smartslider Tools for your website ➜ https://websitelearners.com/tools/ Beautiful websites require hard work. However, Wordpress makes them easy to make. One of the features that makes websites beautiful is the slider. Sliders are very powerful elements in websites. They are lovely, and can be used to convey a lot of information, using only a small part of the web page. Making sliders could be quite tricky, but the benefits are worth the effort. Sliders have the ability to: to pass lots of info across to users without chunky text. grab attention of readers quickly. display other content asides images, such as videos. However, they could end up being really messy. For this reason, we would be taking a look at how to effortlessly create sliders on our Wordpress website through plugins. Quick, simple and easy to use. We would be creating a slider, be it compact or fullscreen in just four steps. Step 1: Download the Slider Plugin We would be downloading the slider plugin (https://websitelearners.com/get/smartslider). The Smart Slider 3 plugin would be used for this tutorial. Guess what? It‘s free to download. Don‘t forget it is the wordpress slider we are going to be using here. Step 2: Upload the plugin to your site What we would do next is to visit the Wordpress dashboard, click on the plugins section and upload the downloaded Smart Slider 3 plugin. After uploading the plugin, we would then activate the plugin. Things are about to get interesting here, we would be creating our first beautiful slider. Step 3: Create your first slider After activating our Smart Slider 3 plugin, it would be available on the Wordpress dashboard. Then we would click on it on the Wordpress dashboard. After clicking on it, there would be two options to create a slider, either manually or using a template. Remember I said it would be easy the other time, therefore we would be using the template which is the faster option here. Selecting the template option would present us with free and premium templates. Choose any of the templates, and we would get a preview of the template. The template can then be imported, and would be present in the Smart Slider menu. Step 4: Add the slider to a page Next stop would be to add the slider to the website. Visit the website‘s homepage or whatever page you wish to add the plugin, and click “Edit with Elementor”. New icons would pop up on the webpage, click the “+” and then the “Smart Slider” option. Drag and drop the “Smart Slider” option on the web page and then choose the template of choice. To finish this up, update the web page using the update option at the bottom of the page. Yipeee! We’ve added a slider to our wordpress website. Step 5: Edit the Slider To edit a slider, click on the “Smart Slider” option at the top of your Wordpress website, and click on the edit slider option. If you wish to get better templates, you can buy from the premium templates available.

How to update Wordpress: Automatic update In WordPress 2.7.x you can easily update your application directly from the admin area. When a new version is available, you will see a notification in the WP admin area. Before you proceed with the upgrade, we strongly advise you to make a backup of your WordPress. When you are ready, click Please update now to proceed with the upgrade. On the next page you can choose whether to upgrade automatically or manually. Click Upgrade Automatically :) If everything goes smoothly, your WordPress will be successfully upgraded. How to Upgrade Wordpress: Manual upgrade Step 1: Backup the Database Tables and Files including .htaccess. You can refer to the WordPress backup tutorial for further instructions on how to complete this step. Step 2: Deactivate Plugins Deactivate all the Plugins you use from the plugin management page. Some plugins might not work with the new WordPress version and in order to avoid discrepancies it would be best to deactivate all plugins. This will ensure that you won't end up with an upgraded but broken installation of WordPress after the upgrade process. Step 3: Overwrite Files Overwrite option 1: Get the latest WordPress version from Wordpress download page and upload it to the WordPress directory, overwriting all the files that exist there. This will preserve your images and themes. Overwrite option 2: Deleting your old files on the server and uploading the newer files from the new version you've downloaded is an alternative which will ensure that the files on the server have been replaced for sure. If you are not sure how to do this, we recommend you to refer to our FTP tutorial where you will find step by step instructions how to upload files. Which option is better? Generally, it is a good idea to delete whatever is possible because the uploading (or upgrading through cPanel) process may not correctly overwrite an existing file and that may cause problems later. DO NOT DELETE these folders and files: wp-config.php file; wp-content folder; wp-images folder; wp-includes/languages/ folder--if you are using a language file, do not delete this folder; .htaccess file--if you have added custom rules to your .htaccess, do not delete it; Custom Content and/or Plugins--if you have any images or other custom content or Plugins inside the wp-content folder, DO NOT delete them. DELETE these Files and Folders: wp-* (except for those above), readme.html, wp.php, xmlrpc.php, and license.txt; files; Typically files in your root or wordpress folder. Again, don't delete the wp-config.php file. wp-admin folder; wp-includes folder; If using a language file remember don't delete the wp-includes/languages/ folder wp-content/cache folder; You only see this folder if you are upgrading FROM WordPress 2.0. Step 4: Run the upgrade script Visit your blog's Upgrade Page (http://yourdomainname.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php) and follow the instructions that are displayed. Step 5: Reactivate Plugins one by one Activate your plug-ins, one by one, at the Plugin Management Page. Check if everything works as expected. If any plugin does not work, deactivate it and then you might contact the plugin author to encourage the author to upgrade the plugin.

I'd really appreciate Subscribes and Comments if you found this video helpful. Just click: http://websiteright.co.uk/subscribe - I'm doing these videos to share my knowledge to newbies and those more experienced! The new version of Wordpress 5.0 with its new Gutenberg editor may be causing issues for your installation of WP Bakery Page Builder. If you have a version of WP Bakery Page Builder before 5.6, you will not be able to edit your website the usual way you know and love. This video details how to upgrade your version of WP Bakery Page Builder. You may have a licence, in which case you can use the simple one-click Upgrade in your plugins folder in order to move to 5.6. However many themes have the plugin bundled in without a licence, therefore you'll need to either grab a copy. You can either get a licence from here: https://wpbakery.com/ Or if you're an existing client of mine, please get in touch either through the comments or reach me directly via my website: http://websiteright.co.uk

How to optimize your slow WordPress site to load faster. Updates: 1. SiteGround was rated the #1 WordPress host in 10 different Facebook polls https://www.siteground.com/go/managed-wordpress-plans (here are the polls: https://onlinemediamasters.com/siteground-wordpress-hosting-review/#polls) 2. P3 Plugin doesn't work anymore (use GTmetrix Waterfall or Query Monitor plugin to find your slowest loading plugins) 2. WP Rocket was rated the #1 cache plugin in most Facebook polls https://onlinemediamasters.com/wp-rocket-settings/#comparison and has options to setup Cloudflare + StackPath CDN, plus other features most cache plugins don't have (lazy load, database cleanup, hosting Google Analytics locally). If you use WP Rocket you don't need WP-Optimize for database cleanup. 3. MaxCDN got bought out by StackPath: https://tracking.stackpath.com/c/54153/469817/8285 4. My new GTmetrix report (OMM is my main site): https://gtmetrix.com/reports/www.onlinemediamasters.com/EuDVQ8Vv My WordPress speed optimization tutorial shows you how to fix items in your GTmetrix report (and other speed testing tools). I cover minify, caching, image optimization, content delivery network and much more. I would start with the free stuff, then move on to paid solutions like faster hosting or MaxCDN (now StackPath). Also, if after configuring WP Fastest Cache you still see minify, caching, add expires header, or specify a cache validator items in GTmetrix, I recommend configuring WP Rocket instead, then using these settings: https://onlinemediamasters.com/wp-rocket-settings/ TIMESTAMPS Deactivate/replace plugins: 1:02 Faster hosting: 2:31 Cloudflare: 3:57 Cache plugin + MaxCDN: 4:48 Serve scaled images: 8:11 Specify Image dimensions: 9:52 Lossless image compress: 10:09 WP Optimize to delete garbage: 11:32 Update WordPress: 12:14 Lightweight WordPress theme: 12:56 LINKS bdkamol: https://www.freelancer.com/affiliates/tdupuis7 SiteGround: https://www.siteground.com/wordpress-hosting.htm?afcode=a031802db8c80f9a78347bc2ab0b4253 MaxCDN (Now StackPath CDN): https://onlinemediamasters.com/go/stackpath/ WP Rocket: https://onlinemediamasters.com/go/wp-rocket/ WP Fastest Cache Tutorial: https://onlinemediamasters.com/wp-fastest-cache-settings/ StudioPress themes: http://my.studiopress.com/themes/ Yes, I used affiliate links... URGENT Announcement about the Yoast SEO WordPress Plugin Update that Causes Search Rankings to Drop in Google for some websites and blogs. This issue was caused by the Yoast SEO Plugin Update to 7.0 back in March and some websites have reported their Google Search Rankings have taken a hit. Learn To Code a WordPress Theme: https://youtu.be/pEJ2IzYOx5c Get DevWP: https://www.pixemweb.com/devwp-wordpress-development-training-theme/ The issue is attributed to a bug in the March Update that changed a setting in the Yoast SEO plugin Search Appearance Media Section from Yes to No. This caused urls to be created for each image on the website and triggered on some sites, the Google Panda Thin Content issue where websites have lots of indexed urls with pages full of virtually no content and Google sees this as a major ranking issue. In this video I show you how to check your Yoast SEO settings to make sure they are correct and also how to use the Yoast SEO Search Index Purge add-on plugin to help remedy the issue by getting Google to de-index the urls with thin content. Note: Yoast SEO was quick to resolve this issue and worked in conjunction with John Mueller from Google to ensure the remedy is approved by Google. It's important to view this entire video and follow the steps and also read the links that go further into detail on this problem that caused some websites and blogs to have drastic drops in the google search results because of the thin content issue created by the urls that were added to the index with the Yoast SEO update to 7.0 back in march. https://yoast.com/media-attachment-urls/ https://wordpress.org/plugins/yoast-seo-search-index-purge/ I still highly recommend the Yoast SEO WordPress plugin for every website and blog because it's the best solution for Search Engine Optimization, it's well maintained and Yoast is committed to the WordPress Community. Make sure to subscribe to the channel and hit the notification bell.

Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL 4 Places To Edit WordPress CSS | WP Learning Lab To edit WordPress CSS you first need to know all the places you can find CSS. There are 4 common places. You may not have all these locations on your website because some of them are theme-dependent. The possible CSS locations are: 1. The WordPress theme or child theme stylesheet (this one you have for sure) 2. The theme options panel (this one you may or may not have) 3. A CSS editor on each page and post (this one you may or may not have) 4. Inline CSS applied directly to HTML elements on the page (this one you will have only if you're written it) Let's go through each one. The WordPress theme or child theme stylesheet When inside your WordPress dashboard if you click on Appearance then Editor you will be able to edit theme or child theme files. Usually the style.css is loaded first by default. If it's not loaded find the style.css file in the list of files on the right side of the editor page. When you find it, click on it. That will open the CSS file in WordPress editor. At this point you can make edits to the file and click on the Update button to save your changes. How to actually code CSS is beyond the scope of this tutorial, but you can check out my CSS channel over here (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCeFLITjl2v9vtIkftw9UMsw) The danger in editing CSS directly in the stylesheet of the main theme is that what you create may be over written when the theme updates. You get around this problem by creating a child theme (see a tutorial on how to create a WordPress child theme here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8n1h-85SMQ). The theme options panel Not every theme has a theme options panel, but the ones that do make WordPress CSS so much easier to edit. You can simply add CSS to the CSS box in the theme options and click save changes. The upside is that theme updates won't erase the CSS code you create. A CSS editor on each page and post Some themes, like Avada and Divi, give you the option of insert CSS code right into the individual posts and pages of your website. This is great for CSS that you want to be only one page. I would only recommend doing this if you're putting more than 100 lines of CSS into the page. If it's less than 100 lines of CSS you're better to put into the main stylesheet so you stay organized. If it's more than 100 lines of CSS code that only need to exist on one page then your site will load a little bit faster overall by not loading all that CSS into every page. Inline CSS The last place in our list and the last place you'd want to create CSS code is right in your HTML elements. This is called inline CSS and can be difficult to work with for two big reasons. First, you can't apply the CSS to more than one element at a time. So if you want to style all the paragraphs on the page in the same way you have to apply the same CSS code over and over again to each p tag. This is a pain to administer and will result in larger than needed page sizes. Second, if you add inline CSS to lots of pages it will be come difficult to remember what CSS you applied where. Then trying to find it an make edits will become a pain. Inline CSS also takes precedent over CSS in the stylesheet. So you might be make changes to CSS in the stylesheet, but nothing is happening on the page. You'll go through a frustrating few minutes before you figure out the CSS is actually inline on the page. I hope this information helps you! Since the export is supported only in the desktop versions, we will use Nicepage for Windows for this demonstration. Add a Website Run Nicepage for Windows. Add a new website. Select one of the pre-designed examples, for example, this one. Once you have created the website, Nicepage automatically opens the first page for editing. A WordPress theme typically has the Blog and Post templates. Therefore, we will select a style for the Blog template to demonstrate the Theme export. Select Theme - Blog Template. Select a style. Click Done. Export Options Let’s export. Note, there are three Export options available for WordPress. The first option is for exporting only the Nicepage Theme without the content. In the Export dialog enter the zip name and select the “Theme” option. Click the Export button. The second option is for exporting only the Content created in Nicepage which will also include the Nicepage WordPress Plugin . Note that this option does not include the Theme. Therefore, it should be used only if the Nicepage Theme was installed before. In the Export dialog enter the zip name and select the “Content” option. Click the Export button. Finally, the third option is used to export both the Theme and the Content in one package. In the Export dialog enter the zip name and select the “Theme and Content” option. Click the Export button. Installing the WordPress Theme, Pages and Plugin Since the “Theme and Content” export is the most commonly used combination, we will start with this option. Switch to your WordPress Admin. Select Appearance - Themes. Click Add New. Click Upload Theme. Choose the zip file from your local export folder. Click “Install Now”. Click “Activate”. Start the WordPress Plugin installation. Click the “Begin installing plugin” link, recommended for the Nicepage Theme. In the “Install Required Plugins” screen, click the Install link. Once the WordPress Plugin is installed successfully, return to the dashboard. You should see the notification asking if you want to import the Content. Click the “Import content” button. Switch to Pages. Click Pages - All Pages in the WordPress Panel to the left. Click the “Home” page link to open the Home page. Select the Nicepage Template with the header and the footer in the “Template” drop-down list. Click the Update button. Click the “Edit with Nicepage” button to start the Content Editor inside your WordPress site. You should see the same editor and the page created in the Nicepage for Windows application. Preview the Page in the Nicepage WordPress Plugin. Click Preview. Also click the Visit site link in the WordPress menu. Installing the WordPress Theme Only Now we are proceeding to other two options. We will install the WordPress Theme without the Content. Go back to the WordPress dashboard. Note we have reverted the previous installation. Select Appearance - Themes. Click Add New. Click Upload Theme. Select the zip from you local export folder. Click Install Now. Click Activate. The theme is installed. Click the Visit Site link in the WordPress menu to preview. You see the Blog set by default for your Wordpress site. And it uses the style selected in the Nicepage for Windows application. Install the Content. Note this option is used only if the Theme was previously installed. As a reminder the zip contains both the content and the WordPress Plugin. First we will install the Plugin. Go to Plugins - Add New. Click the “Upload Plugin” button. Select the zip from your local export folder. Click the “Install Now” button. Click the “Activate Plugin” button. Now import the content. Select Nicepage - Import in the WordPress menu. Select the same zip from your local export folder. You may want to remove the previously installed content. Finally, click the “Upload file and import” button.Select Pages. Open the Home page. Select the Nicepage template with the header and the footer in the Template drop-down menu. Click Update. Preview the page. You see that the page does not have a menu. Close the Nicepage preview. Adding a WordPress Page to the Menu Let’s Add a menu. Select Appearance - Menus. Select the Primary Navigation position for the menu. Add the Home page to the menu. Click the Save Menu button. Select Pages - All Pages. Select the Home page. Click the “Edit with Nicepage” button. Click the Preview. You see, now there is a menu from the Theme. Nicepage Builder saves newly created pages as Drafts. To make the page public you should Publish it, or change it status to 'Published'. Preview the WordPress site. Click the “Visit Site” link. You see the Blog displayed by default. Click the menu. Select the Home page.
