Do you know the best plugins for it and how to make them work? Do you have security concerns? People are more likely to come back to your site if it is appealing. Here are some of the basics to get you started. Choose an interesting and unusual design for your WordPress blog. Though it is less time consuming, your site will blend in with other blogs. Your site should be unique and reflect your personality. A clean permalink will make it easier to post blogs with long titles. This would be a URL that is too long: "Ten Parenting Methods For Taming Kids The Smart Way." Use a few words that are descriptive of the blog. Put in some time to get to know all of WordPress' bells and whistles. It's important for you to understand what the different features do and how each option improves your webpage. Download the plugin ➜ https://websitelearners.com/get/smartslider Tools for your website ➜ https://websitelearners.com/tools/ Beautiful websites require hard work. However, Wordpress makes them easy to make. One of the features that makes websites beautiful is the slider. Sliders are very powerful elements in websites. They are lovely, and can be used to convey a lot of information, using only a small part of the web page. Making sliders could be quite tricky, but the benefits are worth the effort. Sliders have the ability to: to pass lots of info across to users without chunky text. grab attention of readers quickly. display other content asides images, such as videos. However, they could end up being really messy. For this reason, we would be taking a look at how to effortlessly create sliders on our Wordpress website through plugins. Quick, simple and easy to use. We would be creating a slider, be it compact or fullscreen in just four steps. Step 1: Download the Slider Plugin We would be downloading the slider plugin (https://websitelearners.com/get/smartslider). The Smart Slider 3 plugin would be used for this tutorial. Guess what? It‘s free to download. Don‘t forget it is the wordpress slider we are going to be using here. Step 2: Upload the plugin to your site What we would do next is to visit the Wordpress dashboard, click on the plugins section and upload the downloaded Smart Slider 3 plugin. After uploading the plugin, we would then activate the plugin. Things are about to get interesting here, we would be creating our first beautiful slider. Step 3: Create your first slider After activating our Smart Slider 3 plugin, it would be available on the Wordpress dashboard. Then we would click on it on the Wordpress dashboard. After clicking on it, there would be two options to create a slider, either manually or using a template. Remember I said it would be easy the other time, therefore we would be using the template which is the faster option here. Selecting the template option would present us with free and premium templates. Choose any of the templates, and we would get a preview of the template. The template can then be imported, and would be present in the Smart Slider menu. Step 4: Add the slider to a page Next stop would be to add the slider to the website. Visit the website‘s homepage or whatever page you wish to add the plugin, and click “Edit with Elementor”. New icons would pop up on the webpage, click the “+” and then the “Smart Slider” option. Drag and drop the “Smart Slider” option on the web page and then choose the template of choice. To finish this up, update the web page using the update option at the bottom of the page. Yipeee! We’ve added a slider to our wordpress website. Step 5: Edit the Slider To edit a slider, click on the “Smart Slider” option at the top of your Wordpress website, and click on the edit slider option. If you wish to get better templates, you can buy from the premium templates available.

Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL Download our exclusive 10-Point WP Hardening Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist WordPress Permalink Settings Walkthrough - What Are Permalinks? | WP Learning Lab When webmasters first move to WordPress permalinks are one of those confusing things that don't make sense right away. I think it's because of the name. WordPress Permalinks are just how the URL structure for your website is defined. I'm sure if the WordPress developers named it URL Structure instead of Permalinks there would be much less confusion. Sorry about the rant. Moving On :) Permalinks are important for SEO, so it's not a setting you want to take lightly. Let's get started and do it right because permalinks are a pain to change after you've already create a lot of content (find out why at the bottom of this article). To get to the WordPress Permalink Settings page please log into your WordPress admin panel and then hover over the Settings menu option. In the flyout dropdown menu that appears please click on Permalinks. On the next page you see the Permalink Settings. By default, WordPress chooses the Default setting for your site's Permalinks and it is the worst option for SEO. To maximize the SEO power of every URL on your website you want to make sure that the URL contains the keyword(s) you are trying to rank for. Keeping that in mind the only two permalink options that are useful are "Day and name" and "Post name". They both put the post title into the WordPress permalinks structure. The post title should also contain the keyword(s) you're trying to rank for. The "Day and name" option also includes the day, month and year the article was published. This is great for a news website where dates are important. If you have just a content website then I recommend you stick with the "Post name" option which puts nothing in the URL besides your domain name and the post name. You can also create WordPress custom permalinks, but unless you know what you're doing I recommend you don't do that. The permalinks can be edited a little bit when you are publishing your posts as well. In the Optional section at the bottom of the page you can choose base content for the category and tag URLs. You can leave these fields blank and click on "Save Changes". If you already have a bunch of content and you are now changing your Permalinks make sure that you 301 redirect all of the old URLs to the new ones otherwise you're going to lose a lot of SEO power and Google rankings. Yoast SEO Setup & Installation, Step-by-Step - WordPress SEO Complete Walkthrough https://youtu.be/IDGetWWt4eY Yoast SEO in the repo: https://en-ca.wordpress.org/plugins/wordpress-seo/ It's finally here. The official 2018 update video for Yoast SEO. It'll walk you through the setup if you have never installed it. And after that you'll see the new on-page SEO checklist in action which will help maximize your on-page SEO. Join our private Facebook group today! https://www.facebook.com/groups/wplearninglab This tutorial is broken into two parts. First we'll install and configure the Yoast SEO plugin using the on-boarding wizard. Then we'll optimize a blog post using the new 2018 on-page SEO optimization checkilst. SEO Yoast has had many names over the years, but it has almost always been the 'go-to' plugin for WordPress SEO. There is a free version and a premium version as well as some nice add-ons like video SEO. Some of the great features of the free version have been moved into the paid version, but the free version is still powerful. But, first we need to install the plugin. To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New. On the next page type "SEO Yoast" into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left. Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it's installed. A new menu item called SEO has been added to the bottom of the left-hand menu in your WordPress admin. There's also a new link in the admin header bar called SEO. If it's your first time installing the plugin you'll be taken right to the on-boarding wizard where you set some common settings. These are: 1. Welcome Page You can decided to work through the on-boarding yourself or pay SEO Yoast to do it for you. Since your watching this tutorial you probably don't need to pay for it. When you're done here click on Next. 2. Your Environment Here you specify if your site is under construction or already active. Choose under construction if you want to keep the site out of the index of search engines. Don't forget to activate it once you're ready to publish your site. The options are: Option A: My site is live and ready to be indexed Option B: My site is under construction and should not be indexed Click next when you've chosen the appropriate one. 3. Your Site Type Next you choose the site type, also self-explanatory: - blog - online shop (ecommerce) - news channel - small offline business - corporation - portfolio - Something else Click next when you've chosen the appropriate one. 4. Company or Person Next, you choose whether the site is for a company or an individual. When you choose company you are given a name field to fill out and you can choose a logo image. This information is important for Google indexing. Click next when you've chosen the appropriate one. 5. Social Profiles In this step you can add URLs to all the social profiles that you or your business has. Click next when you're done. 6. Search Engine Visibility This is where we choose which types of content on the site should be hidden from Google. If you want your content to rank then you'll want to have as much content visible as a possible. The exceptions are "Media". I would also hide that category. And some of the custom post types on your site may also need to be hidden if they don't add any value for your visitors. Click next when you're done. 7. Multiple Authors Here you simply say whether your site will have multiple authors or not. Click next when you've choosen. 8. Google Search Console Here you authenticate your site with GSC, which you should always do so Google can tell you about any issues they find. Click next when you're done. 9. Title Settings This is where you set the format of your titles. Click next when you're done. 10. Newsletter SEO Yoast offers you a chance to subscribe to their newsletter at this stage. If you don't want to then simply click on Next. 11. Upsell Page Here SEO Yoast offers you the ability to upgrade to the premium version of the plugin or to purchase additional training from the company. If you don't want any of those offers then click Next. 12. Success! Now you're done. Click Close. Now that the Yoast SEO plugin installation and configuration is complete we can SEO optimize a post or page. SEO Optimizing a Post Open any post in the WordPress editor. You then click on Theme Details and you will see a blue link with the text Update Theme. Click on that to start the theme updating process. It is just as quick and painless as updating the WordPress core files. To update your plugins all you need to do is click on the Plugins link in the left hand admin menu. Any plugins that have an update available will have an orange background. To update a plugin simply click on the Update link below the plugin description. Depending on your WordPress version the update will happen without taking you to another page. If you are taken to another page then you have to click on the Update button on that page. Plugin updates are also quick and painless, but essential for your site's security. Just make sure before you do any updates that you have a backup of your WordPress site files and database just in case something goes wrong. I hope this information helps you! Looking to add a mega menu to your WordPress site? Mega menus allow you to add multi-column drop-down menus to your navigation with media items such as images and videos. In this video, we will show you how to add a mega menu to your WordPress site. Mega Menus are helpful for sites that have a massive amount of content and are designed to show more content in the top menu. WordPress navigation menus by default let you add drop-down submenus and image icons but can take up a large amount of space. A mega menu allows you to bulk add items to your menu. For this tutorial we will be using the plugin Max Mega Menu found here: https://wordpress.org/plugins/megamenu/ With the plugin installed and activated you will want to go to the Mega Menu section to go to the plugin's settings. The default settings for most should work but you will normally need to update the colors of the menu. To do that you will go to Menu Themes, Menu Bar, and find the menu background settings. You can use inspect element to determine the color of your current menu. If you do not know how to use Inspect element, we cover how to in our article: http://www.wpbeginner.com/wp-tutorials/basics-of-inspect-element-with-your-wordpress-site/ Don't forget to save your changes to your Mega Menu settings and go to Appearance, Menus. Add some top-level menu items as you would normally add to your menu then click on the mega menu button that appears when you hover over a menu item. This will cause a new popup for editing the mega menu specific options. In here you can add any WordPress widget that you would like to appear in your menu area. To modify the settings for a specific widget you would want to click the wrench icon in the top right of each widget. http"//justusewordpress.com WordPress plug-ins fail from time to time and will not update automatically. How do you get the new plug-in information on to your server? If you're going through the dashboard of WordPress and the plug-in will not automatically update unfortunately you will have to go back to your Go Daddy account and login to the FTP server. FTP stands for file transfer protocol. Now without using an FTP client you can login to Go Daddy and use their FTP file manager this enables you to upload a zip file of your current plug-in version. Once the current plug-in is uploaded to your server you can go back into your WordPress dashboard and activate the plug-in. This makes it simple and easy to keep your plug-ins up-to-date.

Revision Control Using A Simple WordPress Plugin This revision control plugin allows you to keep your WordPress database size manageable. This is especially important if you have a lot of posts or make a lot of edits to your post. Download our exclusive 10-Point WP Hardening Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist Every time you save a post or page the previous version is saved in the database. This allows you to revert back to older versions of pages if you need to. This functionality has saved by day on more than one occasion. The problem with it is that it all those revisions take up a lot of space in your database. Just so we're clear, every time you make a change and click "Update" the old version is stored in the database. This is true if you rewrite the whole post or if you just a space somewhere. I've seen posts with over 100 revisions in the database! These revisions spanned multiple years and where take up valuable space. If you want more revision control it's important to use a Revision Control Plugin. The plugin I walk you through in this tutorial allows you to set a limit to the number of revisions you each post or page is allowed to store in the database. The first step is to download the plugin, so let's do that. To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New. On the next page type "Revision Control" into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left. Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it's installed. Once activated, the plugin adds a new menu item to the admin menu. Go to Settings, then click on Revisions. This is the options page for the plugin. Use the dropdowns in the Default Revisions Status section to set the number of revisions allowed for each post type. You may see more or less post types than I have in this example because the plugin can limit revisions for custom post types. Don't worry about the Revision Range options. Just leave them as they are. Now save changes. The revision control settings will be applied automatically from now on. However, your old posts will still have all the revisions they had before you installed the plugin. What you need to do is go to each existing post or page and click on "Update". This will delete all the revisions above the number or revisions you're allowing. Subscribe to this awesome channel here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=wplearninglab

Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL How To Edit The WordPress Footer | WP Learning Lab To edit the WordPress footer all you have multiple options available to you. You can use the WordPress editor, which is what I show you in this video. You can also edit the footer in the cPanel file manager and via FTP. No matter which method you use to edit your footer, he trick is open the footer.php file. That is where all the footer content is. You'll have to know a bit of PHP to make substantial edits. If you don't know any PHP it's not safe for you to be editing the footer.php file. One wrong move in a PHP template file and you're whole site goes down. Some WordPress themes give you the ability to edit the footer through the theme options panel. Make sure you check in there first and hopefully you can make the edits you need without editing any code. Some themes also use widgets to add content to the footer of your site. If you go Appearance, then Widgets you may see widget areas called footer. Add content to the them, save what you've done and then see how it affected your site. This may be exactly what you're looking for. I hope this information helps you! Grab Your Free 17-Point WordPress Pre-Launch PDF Checklist: http://vid.io/xqRL Database Cleaner Plugin That Removes Expired Transients | WP Learning Lab Download your exclusive 10-Point WP Security Checklist: http://bit.ly/10point-wordpress-hardening-checklist An easy database cleaner process is to remove expired and non-expired transients from your WordPress database. This database cleanup process involves a plugin that deletes bits of information that are temporarily stored in your database. Sometimes, a plugin developer will code the expiration incorrectly and the transients never expire. This can lead to a bloated and slow database. The transients accumulate in the wp_options table. The view the size of the table you have to access your phpMyAdmin through your hosting account cPanel. Then you open the database for your site and you will see a high level table called wp_options. To the far right it shows the size of the table. Make note of the size and compare it to the size of the table after you clear any expired transients the plugin finds. Next, let's install the plugin. To install this plugin please log into your WordPress dashboard, hover over Plugins and then click on Add New. On the next page type "delete expired transients" into the search bar. The plugin we want should be the first one in the top left. Click on the Install Now button and then click Activate after it's installed. Once activated, a new menu item is added under the Tools menu called Delete Transients. Click on that menu item. Now you'll see the simple, single page of the plugin. This page shows how many expired transients there are on your site and how many transients in total. Transients that aren't expired are generally needed by one of your plugins to work properly. After a certain amount of time those transients expire and can be deleted. Improperly coded plugins don't have that expiration associated with the transients, so the transients never expire and just pile up in your database. Below the numbers of transients, you can choose what to delete. The safest is to delete expired transients, if there are any. Since they're expired they're no longer in use. You also have the option of deleting all transients, which you should do with caution. There is a chance it will affect your site's functionality until the plugin needing those transients creates them again. However, on one of my sites, I have a plugin, I don't know which one yet, that keeps creating transients without expiring them. So my database keeps growing in size. So, in my case I'm comfortable deleting all the transients because that improves my site's function. After you've chosen the right option for you click on the Delete button. Now you can go back to your phpMyAdmin and refresh the page to see if there is a change in the size of the wp_options table. For me, the change in size is always substantial.
