Things like GICs, Stocks, and Mutual Funds. We’ve also discussed some rules to keep in mind as you approach investing. As we mentioned before, our favourite investment option is one that is low risk, but provides medium to high rewards. Remember Index funds? They are a type of mutual fund that imitates certain stock indexes, hence the name. In Canada we have one main stock exchange, which is the Toronto Stock Exchange, or TSX. You can go on Wikipedia right now and look at a list of stocks that are traded on that exchange. You can’t actually buy the TSX, but some banks have created a mutual fund that is very close to holding all of the stocks listed within the TSX. There are mutual funds that mimic other exchanges like S&P500 and the NASDAQ. Because index funds represent the stock exchange, and the stock exchange’s composition doesn’t change much, index funds are what’s known as “passively traded”. On the other hand, you have mutual fund managers who are actively buying and trading stocks to get better returns. They are trying to “beat the market”. These mutual funds are “actively traded”. So with passively traded funds, the fees associated with buying index funds are much lower, usually less than 1% of total assets. Actively traded mutual funds hover around the 2% mark. Wait, 1%, 2%, of what? These fees are asset-based, meaning it’s a percentage of what you have invested. This means that if you have $10,000 invested in an index fund, you are paying $100 a year in fees. Compare that with paying $200 a year on a 2% fee mutual fund. Index funds are recommended by most billionaire investors such as Warren Buffet because through statistical data, they perform better than most mutual funds offered to you by your financial advisor, yet charge significantly less management fees. Here’s a fun fact: 96% of all professionally managed mutual funds don’t beat the stock index. That means you have a 4% chance to beat the market when you choose a mutual fund offered to you by a financial advisor. Let’s imagine you went to the casino to play blackjack. The goal of blackjack is to beat the dealer’s hand, to get as close to 21 as possible without going over. If you get two face cards right off the bat, you have 20 points, which is a great hand. However, if the idiot inside you says “hit me”, in hopes of getting an ace, you only have an 8% chance of getting one. So, think about it, you are two times more likely to get an ace in blackjack then you are to outperform an index with a mutual fund. Why would you consider putting something so important as your life savings into something with such a low chance of success? We’re not saying you’ll lose your money in mutual funds, but the index, and more specifically index funds, have been proven to perform substantially better in the long run, in both market booms and crashes. So why do banks promote mutual funds so much? Well remember that you’re paying a really high fee to hold these mutual funds, and banks are a business too. Your financial advisor becomes a salesperson when they recommend funds for you because they are being told by their manager and company to promote certain funds. So be sure to do your research, and in later videos we’ll reveal how you can ask the right questions to your financial advisor. Along with stock index funds, there are bond index funds as well. These follow the same concept in that the fund will have as many different types of bonds in it as possible.

02:53
Subscribe for more great videos, or check out: www.SRPL.net ========================== My poor dad always told me to me go to school and get a high-paying job. That’s not creating wealth. That's a job. My rich dad on the other hand always says work for assets. There are basically 4 asset classes that makes a person rich. Number 1 is Business. The richest young guys today start companies. Some great examples of this are Facebook, Google, Apple, etc. Number 2 is real estate. What my rich dad taught me is the combination of being an entrepreneur in business and an entrepreneur in real estate. Now due to this combination, I pay no tax and I make a lot more money. The 3rd asset is Paper. Savings in gold, papers like stocks bonds mutual funds are liquid. You make a mistake, you can get in and out real quick. The last asset is Commodities and this is why I own oil because in the U.S. if you deal in oil, you get tax breaks. So oil is very profitable. ========================== Subscribe for more great videos, or check out: www.SRPL.net

Anti-Money-Laundering, Counterterrorism Financing and Financial Crime

01:03:31
Anti-Money-Laundering, Counterterrorism Financing and Financial Crime: The Critical Role of Financial Institutions and How It Affects You Talk by Hue Dang ’92, Head of Asia for the Association of Certified Anti-Money-Laundering Specialists. Media coverage in the last several years of financial penalties against global banks such as BNP Paribas ($8.9 billion) or HSBC ($1.92 billion) for money-laundering and sanctions violations—to name just a few examples—highlights the increasing risks to banks as they conduct their normal business. We now live in an era of international money-laundering controls. The terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, revolutionized the anti-money-laundering (AML) field and brought into stark relief the threat of the movement and disguising of funds destined for the support of terrorism throughout the world, introducing a whole new effort to combat the financing of terrorism (CFT). As a result of the governmental reaction in virtually all countries, banks, non-bank financial institutions and nonfinancial businesses face tougher national and international legal requirements and harsher penalties than ever before. By the same token, the regulators of those businesses, law-enforcement agents and prosecutors also face greater challenges and responsibilities in their work. The discussion of what this means to you will include the economic and social consequences of money laundering; the latest regulatory developments in the U.S., Asia and Europe; challenges in effective AML/CFT implementation; and key lessons learned from recent cases. Presented by the Class of 1992.

Money and Finance: Crash Course Economics #11

10:36
So, we've been putting off a kind of basic question here. What is money? What is currency? How are the two different. Well, not to give away too much, but money has a few basic functions. It acts as a store of value, a medium of exchange, and as a unit of account. Money isn't just bills and coins. It can be anything that meets these three criteria. In US prisons, apparently, pouches of Mackerel are currency. Yes, mackerel the fish. Paper and coins work as money because they're backed by the government, which is an advantage over mackerel. So, once you've got money, you need finance. We'll talk about borrowing, lending, interest, and stocks and bonds. Also, this episode features a giant zucchini, which Adriene grew in her garden. So that's cool. 5. How do Private Equity Firms and its partners make money?

03:26
How do Private Equity Firms and its partners make money? Who are these GPs that we discussed in our last video (Video #4)? They are the private equity firms. Some of the largest private equity firms in the world are Carlyle Group, TPG, KKR, Blackstone and Apollo. Private equity firms make money primarily through two sets of fees: management fees and performance fees. Management fees are a percentage of assets which are meant to cover office rent, employee salaries and other types of day-to-day expenses. Traditionally,in private equity, these fees have been 2% of assets. As private equity firms have grown (and continue to grow) larger, management fees for the mega funds decreased below 2%. In venture capital, the smaller funds might have management fees higher than 2%. The second type of fee is a performance fee, also known as carried interest or “the carry”. This fee is used to compensate the GP for its performance. Occasionally, there is a hurdle rate which guarantees the investor be paid a fixed amount before the GP can get any part of the fee (the performance fee is typically 20% of the upside). Let’s look at an example where we have a performance of 20%, a hurdle rate of 8% and a GP catch up clause. The first 8% of performance will go to the LP; the next 2% will go to the GP. The remainder of the returns will be divided 80% to the LP and 20% to the GP. With a 2% management fee and a 20% performance fee, the private equity fund is said it to be charging “two and twenty”. In addition to management and performance fees, we also have other various small fees such as transaction and/or monitoring fees. Through all these fees, the founders of these top private equity firms have made quite a lot of money. In fact, many private equity founders are billionaires that have done some great things with their money. Among his many donations, Steve Schwartzman from Blackstone has given $150 million to Yale University as well as $100 million to the New York public library to fund renovation and expansion. In addition to many other projects, Henry Kravis from KKR has given $125 million dollars to the Columbia Business School and a $100 to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre to fund cancer treatment and research. And, finally there’s David Rubenstein from The Carlyle Group. Rubenstein signed the Giving Pledge that was originated by Bill Gates and Warren Buffett encouraging wealthy individuals to give away half of their earnings, either during their lifetime or through their will. With a net worth of almost $3 billion, David Rubenstein is going to be doing a lot of giving!

UNDERSTANDING HEDGE FUNDS (A Brief Overview)

11:56
We introduce the concept of a hedge fund by going over a brief and basic overview. Hedge funds get mentioned a lot in the financial media, particularly due to their involvement in various market downturns. However, it seems many people do not fully know what a hedge fund is or how it differs from traditional funds. This video is a good starting point to understand the basics, before we can delve in deeper into specific advanced topics related to hedge funds and other aspects of the financial services industry. We also briefly cover the case studies of LTCM, the financial crisis and Bernie Madoff, which are all topics we will focus on in more detail in the future. 10 Levels of Financial Independence And Early Retirement | How to Retire Early

22:12
10 Levels of Financial Independence And Early Retirement | How to Retire Early. Long-term financial goals can sometimes seem so big that they feel almost unattainable especially when we’re just getting started on our road to financial independence. I and many others like me in the financially independent, retired early community have found it helpful to break down the goal of becoming financially independent into smaller and more manageable levels of financial independence. Not only because it makes it easier for us to track our progress, which in turns helps us to stay motivated throughout the process, but also because it helps us get over that initial hurdle of starting to chip away at this mountain of a task. In today’s video, I’m going to take you through what I consider to be the 10 levels of financial independence as well as give an example on how to go from the first level to achieving Financial Independence in your lifetime. Scientists for EU - UK scientists bought out by EU?

05:36
UK scientists tend to be strongly pro-EU. Is that because they get grants from the EU and so are in the pocket of the EU? Don't they realise that their EU science funds are just UK taxpayer funds re-routed? Actually, they do - and if the EU science programme was no good, they would be the first to call for us to pull out and pass our EU contribution money directly to UK scientists through national mechanisms. UK scientists are pro-EU, predominantly, for many reasons. But one leading reason is that the EU science fund allows us to build international teams that we couldn't build if we only had the money funneled nationally. Watch the video to see how that works. Follow "Scientists for EU" on Facebook, G+ and Twitter (@Scientists4EU), subscribe to our YouTube channel - and see our website (scientistsforeu.uk)

The Progressive Income Tax: A Tale of Three Brothers

05:00
"The Progressive Income Tax" is one of those economic terms that gets bandied about, but few actually know what it means or how it works. This tale of three similar brothers with three different incomes (but one shared expense) helps explain the tax system under which we live. Adapted from an article by noted investor and economist, Kip Hagopian, and narrated by actress Carolyn Hennesy of "General Hospital" and "True Blood" fame, this animated story will change the way you think about how you pay your taxes.  Donate today to PragerU! http://l.prageru.com/2ylo1Yt Joining PragerU is free! They were raised in the same home, with the same parents, had the same IQ, same skills and same opportunities. Each was married and had two children. They were all carpenters making $25 per hour. While they were very similar in all these respects, they had different priorities. For example, Tom, chose to work 20 hours per week, while his brother, Dick worked 40 hours and Harry 60. It should also be noted that Harry's wife worked full time as an office manager for a salary of $50,000. Dick's wife sold real estate part time 10 hours a week and made $25,000 per year. Tom's wife did not work. Tom and Dick spent all of their family income. Since they paid into Social Security they figured, they didn't need to save for retirement. Harry and his wife, on the other hand, had, over many years, put away money each month and invested it in stocks and bonds. Here's how it worked out: Tom made $25,000 a year, Dick and his wife made $75,000 and Harry and his wife, $150,000. When a new housing development opened up in their community, the brothers decided to buy equally-priced homes on the same private street. One day the brothers decided to pool their funds for the purpose of improving their street. Concerned about crime and safety, and wanting a more attractive setting for their homes, the three families decided to install a security gate at the street's entrance; repave the street's surface; and enhance the lighting and landscaping. The work was done for a total cost of $30,000. Harry assumed they would divide the bill three ways, each brother paying $10,000. But Tom and Dick objected. "Why should we pay the same as you?" they said. "You make much more money than we do." Harry was puzzled. "What does that have to do with anything?" he asked. "My family makes more money because my wife and I work long hours, and because we have saved some of the money we've earned to make additional money from investments. Why should we be penalized for that?" "Harry, you can work and save all you like" Tom countered. "But my wife and I want to enjoy ourselves now, not 25 years from now." "Fine, Tom. Do what you want. It's a free country. But why should I have to pay for that? "I can't believe your being so... unbrotherly," Tom argued. "You have a lot of money and I don't. I thought you'd be more generous." At this point, Dick, the peacemaker in the family, entered the conversation. "I've got an idea," Dick said. "Our combined income is $250,000, and $30,000 is 12 percent of that amount. Why don't we each pay that percentage of our income? Under that formula, Tom would pay $3,000, I would pay $9,000, and Harry would pay $18,000." "I have a much better idea," said Tom. "And one that's fairer than what you're proposing." For the complete script, visit https://www.prageru.com/videos/progressive-income-tax-tale-three-brothers

Monetary and Fiscal Policy: Crash Course Government and Politics #48

09:19
Today, Craig is going to dive into the controversy of monetary and fiscal policy. Monetary and fiscal policy are ways the government, and most notably the Federal Reserve, influences the economy - for better or for worse. So we’re going to start by looking at monetary policy, and specifically how the Federal Reserve uses interests rates as a means of controlling (or at least attempting to control) inflation. We’ll then move onto fiscal policy - that is the government’s use of taxation to raise and spend money. It’s all, well, pretty controversial, but as it seems Americans hate taxes the most, monetary policy is most often used - meaning that the Federal Reserve plays a hugely significant role in steering the U.S. economy.
