√ Writing about Newspaper Articles | Text Type Studies | English

17:07
#iitutor #English #TextTypeStudies https://www.iitutor.com Writing about Newspaper Articles You can write about newspaper articles in a number of ways: and not just comprehension. To fully interpret the validity, effects and techniques of a news article, you need to ask some questions. How do they Grab Attention? An article can grab attention through a headline, an image, or both. The relationship between headline and image attracts a reader through by interest or emotional response. The first line of the article is important for maintaining this interest, or getting them to ‘click’. Are they Truly Objective? This bias can be seen in any way that a journalist adds personal opinion, be it political, social, cultural, religious or ideological. While many articles are completely objective and impersonal some do indicate bias or emotion. You must analyse what effect this bias has, if any, on the trustworthiness and validity of the article, and be critical. What Sources do they Use? A good test of the trustworthiness of a news article comes from the evidence or source that a news story uses. Some are generally trustworthy such as: Government spokesperson, police, professors, scientists, the subject of the article, photographic evidence Some are less than trustworthy, such as: Witnesses, ‘a source close to’, unrecognised ‘experts’, the subject of the article, ‘man on the street’ What Kind of Story is it? Not all news stories are the same. All stories connect and attract readers in different ways. They can be humorous, scandalous, sensational, fear-mongering, heart-warming or reflective. All stories want to connect with reader in some way, and through this, they appeal directly or indirectly to emotions and interests. How does it use Language? The final question you should ask is how techniques are used, such as: Exaggerated or sensationalist choices of language Emotional or figurative language Formal or colloquial style of language in reporting Puns or rhetorical questions in headline Any distinct layout or visual choices The file name must be E06103.flv

Articles (a, an, the) - Lesson 1 - 7 Rules For Using Articles Correctly - English Grammar

In this lesson, learn the 7 rules for using articles in English correctly. Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I will teach you the seven rules that you need to know for using articles in English correctly. Articles are the words ‘a’, ‘an’, and ‘the’. There is a final quiz at the end of the lesson for you to test your understanding. OK, the first rule is about where to use ‘a’ and where to use ‘an’. So rule number one is use ‘a’ before a consonant sound, and ‘an’ before a vowel sound. So in all of these words – you see that they start with a consonant sound. Cat starts with /k/, dog starts with /d/, boy with /b/, girl with /g/, house with /h/ and tree with /t/. So we say ‘a cat’, ‘a dog’, ‘a boy’, ‘a girl’, ‘a house’, ‘a tree’ etc. Notice that in natural speech, we don’t say ‘a’, we say ‘uh’ – like ‘a cat’. In this next set of words, you see that, they all start with a vowel sound – apple starts with /ae/, engineer starts with /e/, ice-cream with /ai/, old with /o/, umbrella with /uh/. So we say ‘an apple’, ‘an engineer’, ‘an ice-cream cone’, ‘an old womman’, ‘an umbrella’ and so on. In speech, we don’t say ‘an’, we say /ən/. Let’s do a small exercise. You see ten items on the screen. For each one, I want you to say if you would use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before it. Stop the video, think about it, then play the video again and check. OK here are the answers. Did you get them all right? I want to focus on items number seven to ten because these are a little tricky. Number seven is ‘a university’ because even though ‘university’ starts with the letter ‘u’ the first sound of the word is not a vowel sound. We don’t say /ooniversity/. We say /yoo-nə- vər-si-ty/ so that first sound is a /y/ sound, which a consonant sound, so we say ‘a university.’ Number eight is similar. The word ‘European’ starts with a /y/ sound, so ‘a European tour.’ In number nine, the spelling has an ‘h’ at the start but that ‘h’ is silent. We don’t say /hau-ər/, we say /au-ər/. The first sound is an /au/ sound which is a vowel sound, so this is ‘an hour’. In the same way, in number ten, we say MA. ‘M’ starts with an /e/ sound which is again a vowel sound, so ‘an MA in English’. OK let’s move on to rule number two: Use ‘a’ and ‘an’ ONLY with singular, countable nouns. We say that a noun is countable if we can count it – one, two, three, four etc. All of these words on the screen are countable. We can say one elephant, three cars, ten teachers, five hundred onions and so on. Now if you talk about one person or thing, like one elephant or one car, then that’s called a singular noun and if you say ten teachers or five hundred onions, those are called plural nouns. Uncountable nouns cannot be counted in this way. Nouns like water, sugar, milk, love, anger, knowledge are some examples. If you think about it, you cannot say “I drank four waters” or “I want eight milks”. To a person, you can say “I love you” but you can’t say “I have five loves for you” – that doesn’t make any sense. So these are all uncountable. Alright, so the rule is - you can only use ‘a’ and ‘an’ if you’re talking about one person or one thing. Let’s do another quick exercise. Here are ten items again. This time, you see ‘a’ or ‘an’ before the nouns, but some of these are wrong. They should NOT have ‘a’ or ‘an’ before them. Stop the video, identify the mistakes, then play the video again and check. OK, here are the answers. Number three is wrong because ‘shirts’ is a plural and you cannot use ‘a’ or ‘an’ before a plural noun. Number five is wrong because ‘happiness’ is uncountable, so again, ‘a’ or ‘an’ cannot be used there. The same goes for number six – water is uncountable. Number nine is wrong because ‘doctors’ is a plural – you can say ‘a doctor’ but not ‘a doctors’. And finally, in number ten, advice is an uncountable noun – so you cannot ask for ‘an advice’. Now a quick note here: the article ‘the’ can be used with all kinds of nouns – singular or plural countable nouns, and uncountable nouns. OK, so let’s now talk about how to choose between ‘a’ or ‘an’ and ‘the’. Here’s rule number three: Use ‘a’ or ‘an’ to talk about a person or thing unknown to your listener. And use ‘the’ to talk about a person or thing known to your listener. For example, “My sister has two computers: a PC and a laptop. The PC is quite old but the laptop is brand new.” I say ‘a PC’ and ‘a laptop’ because that’s the first time I’m mentioning the two computers. That is, until this point, they are unknown to you, the listener.

Time Magazine Top 100 List 2019 - Why is Christine Blasey-Ford Here?

14:41
Time Magazine has released their annual Top 100 list of the most influential people. Some of the admissions and omissions have raised a few eyebrows. One of the most notable are both Christine Blasey-Ford and Brett Kavanaugh. Some say that the latter shouldn’t be there because of allegations from the prior. Some see it the other way around. Either way, it appears as if most people who are not on the left politically will view the list as biased against them considering the types of people that are on it. Lots of LGBT people, political opponents with no real accomplishments outside of a few minutes of viral fame, and omissions of very important political. Xi Jinping somehow made the list but Vladimir Putin did not. Surprisingly enough, Donald Trump made the list. Chris Christie wrote the article attached to his name in the publication. Mostly all of the 100 admissions had their articles written by somewhat noteworthy people or celebrities. It’s not quite clear how the 100 were selected, but it most certainly does not appear to have been an open vote by regular people. More like the far left staff writers of Time Magazine. *ABL GAMING*: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCP6S9kceWweuTrRVB_WJIPQ *SOCIAL MEDIA* http://www.twitter.com/anthonyblogan http://www.instagram.com/anthonyblogan http://www.facebook.com/1776.logan ***Wooden Flags: https://bhedesigns.com/ ––––––––––––––––––––––– 👕 Order your shirts here: https://teespring.com/stores/abl-gear 📲 Tip me though PayPal: https://www.paypal.me/ablogan 📲 Sponsor me on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/anthonyblogan 🌐 Visit my website: http://www.anthonyblogan.com 💬 Connect with us on Discord: https://discord.gg/JVdp9gu ––––––––––––––––––––––– Time Magazine Top 100 Most Influential People 2019 http://time.com/collection/100-most-influential-people-2019/ TIME MAGAZINE Top 100 Peeps of 2019 CATCHES BACKLASH FOR ODD PAIRINGS https://www.tmz.com/2019/04/17/time-magazine-100-most-influential-list-2019-backlash-blasey-ford-kavanaugh/

I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined. Today I am going to go discuss the broadest of topics: what is a peer-reviewed or a scholarly journal. A journal is a scholarly periodical that is different than a magazine. A journal is geared toward academic pursuits and is meant to inform and educate. The publication is usually peer reviewed which means experts in the specific field review the content prior to publication to determine if it is worthy of publication, meaning it adds to the particular field of study. The peer review is usually blind which means the article authors and the reviewers are reviewing the content and are not told who the author or reviewer is. Journals may be subscription based, or they may be sent to all the members of a particular association society as part of their dues or they may be open access, meaning they are free to be read by anyone at any time. A journal may be in paper and in digital form or, increasingly, in just digital form. Journals are likely to be less reliant on advertising income versus magazines, supposedly making them less influenced by advertisers. A journal is composed of articles which are authored by experts and outsiders from the journal, as opposed to staff written articles in magazines. There are many different types of articles some of which include review articles, research articles, articles from supplements, letters, case reports, survey article, position papers, columns or departments, and many more. The journal normally has an Information or Guidelines for Authors which details what type of articles that journal is interested in, what format submissions need to be in, and how to submit an article; among other things. Articles usually include the authors credentials and contact information to establish the authors credibility to discuss the topic. Articles can be lengthy. Journals are very interested in being included in such places as Google Scholar and in abstracting and indexing services as Pub Med and many, many others. Journals also are interested in metrics such as article downloads, citations in other articles, Altmetrics, and others that help determine which articles are having significant impact. Journals can be found in many academic disciplines such as STM, or science/technical/medicine, law, engineering, social sciences, and the humanities, as well as other areas of scholarly communications. Well that’s it. Hit the Like button below if you enjoyed this video. Please subscribe to my YouTube channel or click on the playlist to see more videos about academic journals and the articles in them. And make comments below or email me with questions. Thank so much and take care.

4 Types of Toxic Cookware to Avoid and 4 Safe Alternatives

09:18
We all know the importance of eating healthy, but not everyone knows that the cookware you use to prepare your dishes is just as important as the food itself. Even the healthiest diet can result in severe health problems if your pots and pans are toxic. Find out which cookware you should avoid by all means for the sake of your own health and the health of your family. The non-stick properties of Teflon cookware are achieved with a coating of PTFE. This is a plastic polymer that, when heated above 572°F, starts to release toxins. These toxic fumes lead to flu-like symptoms called polymer fume fever, informally known as Teflon flu. Another chemical compound found in Teflon cookware is especially threatening since it tends to stay in the body (as well as in the environment) for long periods of time. Try cast-iron cookware instead. It even comes in non-stick varieties. It doesn't leak anything toxic into your food and is actually a nice natural way to increase your body’s iron levels. Though aluminum cookware is usually coated, the coating is prone to chipping, allowing the toxic metal to get right into your food. As for aluminum foil, using it while cooking is even more dangerous. In fact, there’s an established safe amount of aluminum the human body can manage daily, and that’s 20 mg per pound of body weight a day. When you wrap your food in aluminum foil and cook it this way, the amount of this substance that leaks into the food significantly exceeds the permissible level. Consider using glass cookware instead. If you’ve just enjoyed some fish in lemon juice or stewed tomatoes cooked in an uncoated copper pot and you find yourself suffering from extremely unpleasant symptoms (such as vomiting blood, light-headedness, yellowy skin, or gastrointestinal distress, among others) call 911 immediately. Try this safe alternative instead: stainless steel. Just make sure you're buying food-grade stainless steel since this is the only type that doesn't contain any nickel or chromium. Soft ceramic coating isn't durable enough and starts chipping after a few months of daily use. When this happens, lead and cadmium sometimes found in the coating will end up in your food and, thus, in your body. Lead poisoning is one of the most dangerous types of metal poisoning and can result in abdominal pain, headaches, infertility, and other health complications. Try this safe alternative instead: 100% ceramic cookware. TIMESTAMPS Teflon cookware 0:38 Aluminum cookware and aluminum foil 3:31 Copper cookware 5:12 Ceramic-coated cookware 6:54 SUMMARY -Teflon contains plastic polymer that, when heated above 572°F, starts to release toxins. Try this safe alternative instead: real cast-iron. This is a nontoxic cooking option that truly withstands the test of time. It heats well and evenly throughout. -Aluminum is a neurotoxic metal. Elevated levels of aluminum in the body have been linked to several central nervous system diseases, including Alzheimer's and ALS. Try this safe alternative instead: glass cookware. It’ll never release anything toxic when heated, it doesn’t hold onto any old flavors or odors, and it's not only durable but also eco-friendly. -Copper cookware, especially when it isn’t coated, can easily send you to the ER with a bad case of metal poisoning. And that’s because it can release copper when you cook acidic foods. Stainless steel is a great cookware option: it's relatively lightweight, scratch-resistant, and comes in non-stick varieties. -Soft ceramic coating isn't durable enough and starts chipping after a few months of daily use. When this happens, lead and cadmium sometimes found in the coating will end up in your food and, thus, in your body. Try this safe alternative instead: 100% ceramic cookware. This is one of the best and safest options out there since it's made with completely natural materials, it isn't toxic, and it won't chip or peel off. What Your Blood Type Says About Your Personality

10:40
Do you know your blood type? 🅾️🅰️🅱️🆎 It can help you improve your health and even save your life in extreme situations. Also, it can say a lot about you personally! Japanese researchers have been studying blood types for decades and have found a surprising connection between a person’s character traits and blood group. We’re all well-aware that blood has different “types,” but what exactly does that mean? In a nutshell, blood type is based on two things: antibodies and antigens. An antibody is a protein produced by your blood’s plasma that helps your immune system fight different things that make you sick, like bacteria and viruses. Antigens, which are classified as A or B, can be different proteins, carbohydrates, and all sorts of complex biological compounds. #bloodtype #bloodgroup #personality TIMESTAMPS: O-type blood 1:34 A-type blood 2:31 B-type blood 3:49 AB-blood type 5:10 Compatibility horoscope 6:45 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - Japanese experts call people with O-type blood sociable, open-minded, and intuitive. They’re real “people” people and can quickly become the heart of pretty much any conversation. - Japanese professor Tokeji Furukawa, who published a paper on blood types and personality back in 1927, associated A-type blood with creative and responsible people. Intelligent and persistent, these individuals know what they want and go for it! - Japanese researchers find people with B-type blood especially fascinating. You're unbelievably creative, fun, and passionate. You have a true power and strength within you, and your energy knows no bounds. - People with AB blood are believed to be rational and a bit controlling. It's not like they’re gonna start barking orders at you or anything; they just don't like to depend on others. They're the makers of their own fate and their strong-willed personality certainly helps them along the way. - What’s really interesting about the Japanese blood type personality research is that they have a certain word for every group. 15 Ways to Recognize And Avoid Low Quality Clothing

11:25
15 tips that will help you detect a poor-quality item right on the spot. When we buy a piece of clothing, we want to get a quality item. Unfortunately, it often happens that new clothes shrink or get torn after the first wash. TIMESTAMPS Check the quality of cotton by squeezing it 0:40 Hold the fabric up to a bright light 1:09 Pull the seams to see the gaps 1:33 Avoid open zippers 2:02 Check the hem 2:24 Give fabric a tug 2:53 Make sure the zipper matches in length 3:13 Well-cut 3:26 Pay attention to the label 4:09 Make sure the seams and threads match Check buttons and buttonholes 5:07 Check if it has a yoke 6:17 Look at the coloring of the folds 6:42 A center back seam 7:08 Patterns matchup 7:33 How to Select the Perfect Clothes for Your Body Shape 8:26 SUMMARY - When buying clothes made of cotton, do this simple but very illustrative test: grab some fabric and squeeze it as tightly as you can in your fist for a few seconds. Then check if the fabric looks like a crumpled piece of paper. - To check the thickness, hold the fabric up to a bright light. If you don’t see much through it, you are safe to buy it. - A pull test can help you understand if you are holding a piece of junk in your hands, or if you have to pay for it right now feeling happy that you found it. So, try pulling stitched pieces apart. - Make sure you buy clothes and accessories with metal zippers covered with a strap: they are the most reliable and long-lasting. - Pants and skirts should have a hem of up to 2 inches. Blouses and shirts can do with a smaller one of about 1 inch. If there is no hem at all or it’s simply stitched, we do recommend buying this item. - A quality item will always keep its shape. Take a stretchy part of a dress or a skirt, tug on it and then let it go. - Zippers on dresses, skirts, or any other kinds of clothing should be equal in length, even and math in color. - If you notice symptoms like this, don’t jump to the conclusion that you shouldn’t have skipped your gym. It’s possible that the manufacturer just saved money and didn’t use enough fabric. - Natural fabrics, such as cotton, silk, and wool are strong and more durable than synthetics. However, 100% cotton can quickly shrink after washing. - Examine fabric pattern and thread colors. If patterns don’t match and stitches are made with threads of different colors, it is a clear sign that this item was made in a hurry. - When manufacturers make a fake or a low-quality item, they often don’t pay attention to little details. This is why you should always carefully examine buttons and buttonholes before buying an item. - Good shirt and blouses must have a shoulder yoke. It makes the top look neat on you. Cheap items of clothes don’t have a yoke, so they don’t just look bad, but also uncomfortable to wear. - If the coloring on the handles, straps, or fastenings looks faded or leaves marks on the folds, this is a clear sign of a low-quality item. - When you buy a jacket or a coat, pay extra attention to the center back seam. The thing is your back probably doesn’t look completely flat, so if you want it to look beautiful, there must be a quality back seam. - Even a very quick look at them can tell you a lot about how much effort has been put into producing the item. For example, if the pattern on the pocket doesn’t match the pattern on the rest of the item, it means that the production was sloppy, and they tried to save money on the materials.
