Tracking Bitcoin Transactions on the Blockchain - SANS DFIR Summit 2017

29:09
Bitcoins are a commonly-used currency among cyber criminals for exchanging goods and services and receiving payments from ransomware. While cryptocurrency claims to promote anonymity, the nature of the blockchain’s public ledger means that criminal activities can be traced and correlated. This presentation will cover a brief high-level overview of how transactions on the blockchain work and will focus on how to apply this knowledge in order to both manually and automatically map out transactions, associate bitcoin addresses, and identify potential cybercriminal-owned bitcoin wallets with the goal of providing context to the scale and duration of a campaign impacting your enterprise. Examples will include identifying a Locky affiliate’s infrastructure, attributing the Shark/Atom ransomware, and identifying “bitcoin exchanges” on the blockchain. How Bitcoin Can Help Track Down Criminals (HBO)

04:02
People like to think that using Bitcoin makes your transactions anonymous. But buried in last month’s special counsel indictment of 12 alleged Russian spies is an explanation of how law enforcement used the blockchain, the network which facilitates bitcoin transactions, to track and identify the suspects using their cryptocurrency transactions. Because every bitcoin transaction is recorded on a public ledger, law enforcement can trace back bitcoins to its origins. Once you trace enough steps back, an investigator could typically find some place where bitcoins were purchased or where bitcoins were used to purchase a service. This is key, because bitcoin sellers, like Coinbase, or places that sell services, typically require some personal information. With the power of subpoena, law enforcement could obtain that personal information, making it easier to link a bitcoin transaction to a real person, interad of a random series of numbers and letters. One blockchain developer, Tim Cotten, was even able to trace Bitcoin purchases back to Russia’s intelligence agency, the GRU, using only public information. And he agreed to show VICE News how almost anyone with a bitcoin wallet could do something similar. I.R.S. Bitcoin Tracing Tools; Track & Identify Transactions via Chainalysis

I.R.S. Bitcoin Tracing Tools; Track & Identify Transactions via Chainalysis: https://steemit.com/@garypalmerjr As we mentioned in yesterdays video, #Bitcoin is not 100% anonymous; is only pseudo-anonymous, and while some of your privacy may be leaking online, analytics companies like "#Chainalysis" are sifting-up the details and placing tags on a whopping 25%-plus, of all Bitcoin addresses! And now, we find out that U.S. #InternalRevenueService (yes, the beloved #IRS) is using this #BitcoinTracing software (from the startup "Chainalysis") to monitor as many Bitcoin transaction as possible. So, if you pay your taxes and have no secretes, then do you have anything to worry about? Should we be upset that exchanges like #Coinbase are allegedly storing wallets in such a way that an analytics company like Chainalysis or #BitSeer can identify individual users? And what does it mean that the owners of Coinbase have an ownership stake in the startup Chainalysis? === Show Links === ► http://coinmarketcap.com/ ► https://www.coindesk.com/irs-using-bitcoin-tracking-software-since-2015/ ► http://fortune.com/2017/08/22/irs-tax-cheats-bitcoin-chainalysis/ ► https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/6vbhcv/good_morning/ ► https://cointelegraph.com/news/hodlers-beware-hackers-persuade-phone-companies-to-hand-over-numbers ► https://cointelegraph.com/news/each-bitcoin-could-be-worth-619047-in-10-years-forbes-contributor === HOW TO HELP ♥ MINTING COINS™=== 1) WATCH, + Subscribe, Like, & Comment :) 2) DONATE Cryptocurrency, to the addresses below. 3) FOLLOW-us on SteemIt: https://steemit.com/@garypalmerjr/ 4) JOIN us at: https://mintingcoins.com/ === DONATIONS Accepted === ✯ Donate BTC-Bitcoin ♥ 1G5QaqZH6WQ5wcFb6TGbHoT7Ugct6TYnML ✯ Donate ETH-Ether ✯ 0x2184b97649a1689E7F92b11f217AF8ae39f701Aa ...or use our ENS name: mintingcoins.eth ✯ Donate DASH ✯ Xmi5w4F26VPt2C5pSJQahe8969V43zrP2J ✯ Donate LTC-Litecoin ✯ MTPicHRLbBwmqcSEAyhm9qXox2GdAb6iBb ✯ Donate ZEC-Zcash ✯ t1VqC9NL5o3DkNBzKB4fPvtDsdGQ1h2F2nR ✯ Donate BCH/BCC-Bitcoin Cash ✯ 1FXxpWiHh9XoCNrRpb8ii61aecYDDCp2do ✯ Donate XMR-Monero ✯ 49E4qvpriNgJ8C1wD9iSDDcSiSqXFwUUdP7XRnhw7CbfT5mLeGk2M5n6pZtu5P6sk7KficCFCpFUdSpfBqguP1HR6iahc6u === FOLLOW, Like, & Subscribe === ♥ Follow us on SteemIt: https://steemit.com/@garypalmerjr ➨ Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/MintingCoins/ ➨ Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MintingCoins/ ➨ Follow us on Google+: https://plus.google.com/+MintingCoins E-mail us any screenshots, footage, or ideas ..for future episodes, to: MintingCoins 23 @ gmail .com === Approved Products === MINTING COINS™ T-shirt & Accessories! ♥ https://MintingCoins.spreadshirt.com/ Join COINBASE: ♥ https://www.coinbase.com/join/528bf7b561411909040001fa TREZOR Wallet (Cryptocurrency/Bitcoin Hardware-Wallet) ► Shop: https://mintingcoins.com/shop ► eBay: https://goo.gl/sSib2w Bitmain ANTMINER'S ► Shop: https://mintingcoins.com/shop ► eBay, S9 & S7: https://goo.gl/yRdPsG === ABOUT Minting Coins™ === It's time to join the Blockchain & Cryptocurrency Revolution. Blockchain tutorial 26: Bitcoin transaction

21:55
This is part 26 of the Blockchain tutorial explaining how to make a bitcoin transaction. A real demonstration is given how to make a bitcoin transaction on the Bitcoin Testnet. This tutorial shows the following: - How to create multiple public and private bitcoin Testnet key pairs. - How to claim some bitcoins from a faucet and transfer it to a sender address. - How to make a bitcoin transaction by transferring all bitcoins from a sender address to receiver address. This tutorial also explains: - What UTXO (Unspent Transaction Output) is. - What a confirmation is. In this video series different topics will be explained which will help you to understand blockchain. Bitcoin released as open source software in 2009 is a cryptocurrency invented by Satoshi Nakamoto (unidentified person or group of persons). After the introduction of Bitcoin many Bitcoin alternatives were created. These alternate cryptocurrencies are called Altcoins (Litecoin, Dodgecoin etc). Bitcoin's underlying technology is called Blockchain. The Blockchain is a distributed decentralized incorruptible database (ledger) that records blocks of digital information. Each block contains a timestamp and a link to a previous block. Soon people realises that there many other use cases where the Blockchain technology can be applied and not just as a cryptocurrency application. New Blockchain platforms were created based on the Blockchain technology, one of which is called Ethereum. Ethereum focuses on running programming code, called smart contracts, on any decentralized application. Using the new Blockchain platforms, Blockchain technology can be used in supply chain management, healthcare, real estate, identity management, voting, internet of things, etcetera, just to name a few. Today there is a growing interest in Blockchain not only in the financial sector but also in other sectors. Explaining how Blockchain works is not easy and for many the Blockchain technology remains an elusive concept. This video series tries to explain Blockchain to a large audience but from the bottom up. Keywords often used in Blockchain conversation will be explained. Each Blockchain video is short and to the point. It is recommended to watch each video sequentially as I may refer to certain Blockchain topics explained earlier. How to remain anonymous while using bitcoin

01:55
Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency that can help protect your identity when making purchases online. But it's not foolproof. Kevin Mitnick, one of the world's most famous hackers and author of the book "The Art of Invisibility," offers some tips that will help you remain anonymous. Following is a transcript of the video: The whole idea of really being truly invisible is a disconnect between you as the user and your first connection to the internet. If you use bitcoin, there is a blockchain. And the blockchain is really traceable. In fact, during the trial of Ross Ulbricht, the guy that was accused of running the drug emporium Silk Road, they were able to trace millions of dollars of transactions to the wallet on his computer. So to try to anonymize bitcoin, you can go to a bitcoin ATM. You could buy it from person-to-person on the street, which is probably the safest way if you're using a phone that's not really registered to you. Like a burner device. Or you could use services that launder bitcoin. So you could buy bitcoin, for example, with a pre-paid card. You can go to any of the pharmacies, buy prepaid gift cards. You could go to certain sites and actually convert that to bitcoin for a large fee, and then you could go take that bitcoin and launder it even further. They have laundering sites. So you basically send bitcoin to them, and they'll mix it with other people's bitcoins, and eventually send you bitcoin back with a small fee that's deducted from the transaction. And then, when you have this clean bitcoin, you could use it, for example, to top up data cards or to purchase email accounts, where you have to sign up for a subscription, to make it really hard to trace you as the anonymous user behind it. Researchers Unmask Anonymous Tor Users By Tracking Bitcoin Transactions

07:32
Researchers Unmask Anonymous Tor Users By Tracking Bitcoin Transactions Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency and worldwide payment system. It is the first decentralized digital currency, as the system works without a central bank or single administrator. The network is peer-to-peer and transactions take place between users directly, without an intermediary. These transactions are verified by network nodes through the use of cryptography and recorded in a public distributed ledger called a blockchain. Bitcoin was invented by an unknown person or group of people under the name Satoshi Nakamoto and released as open-source software in 2009. Bitcoins are created as a reward for a process known as mining. They can be exchanged for other currencies, products, and services. As of February 2015, over 100,000 merchants and vendors accepted bitcoin as payment.[14] Research produced by the University of Cambridge estimates that in 2017, there are 2.9 to 5.8 million unique users using a cryptocurrency wallet, most of them using bitcoin. ► SUBSCRIBE FOR MORE VIDEOS: https://goo.gl/NYaHq2 ► Bitcoin News -Alt Coin news - coin telegraph - coindesk - coin market cap https://goo.gl/45UVFu ★★★ Thanks for watching! Bitcoin Transactions & Personal Identity Leak, via Online Web Cookies

Bitcoin Beats PayPal in Yearly Transactions

04:26
Bitcoin has surpassed PayPal when it comes to yearly transaction volumes. But it's not even the first time this has happened. It's the second time that Bitcoin has beat out PayPal, back in 2017. Now, according to newsbtc, the data from the global statistics portals show that the Bitcoin network has $1.3 trillion worth of transactional volume in 2018 while PayPal, within the same time frame, only recorded $578.65 billion worth. In 2017, the Bitcoin network had also posted 543.52 billion more transactional volume than the global firm. While this sounds like greater adoption off the bat, Bitcoin was, however, not only used as an asset for people who were looking for cheaper cross-border transactions, but the vast majority of the transactions volume was coming from traders. That's an important note to pick up because, while the PayPal transactions were primarily for payment and remittances, Bitcoin was more for trading. Unfortunately, it's unclear how many users used Bitcoin for Remittance. When it comes to just payments and remittances, it's PayPal would most likely surpass Bitcoin as PayPal has an obvious use and purpose whereas Bitcoin, has many applications and is considered as a multifaceted asset. But interesting enough, (if these events are to occur) and the more Bitcoin is seen as an investable asset; the fewer people would use it for payments or remittances. So the number of transactions would still increase, but more in the trading route than the payments route. Now, NewsBTC takes this another step further by looking at the fundamental problems as to why Bitcoin is not favored as a payment and remittances tool. Bitcoin's volatility problem when it comes to its role in payments and remittances is easily solved if we introduced a trustworthy stablecoin. Stablecoins are great because you get the best of both worlds, of fiat and the crypto industry. Now earlier this month, Bloomberg reported that Facebook is already exploring their cryptocurrency token on Whatsapp. Facebook's stablecoin will without a doubt, be a token that would compete with Tether. What are your thoughts on this situation guys? Are you excited to see Bitcoin Beat PayPal in Yearly Transactional Volume? And are you worried to see Facebook paving the path for their Stablecoin? Let me know what you guys think in the comments Below! It's Cindy with CryptoPig, Catch you guys around! Analyzing Blockchain and Bitcoin Transaction Data as Graph

51:44
Blockchain technology and Bitcoin will potentially revolutionize business transactions. Blockchain offers a robust, decentralized platform for privacy and trust. It underlies the digital crypto-currency Bitcoin, which can be exchanged freely and anonymously, without a central authority. Bitcoin transactions - recorded publicly, provide an invaluable dataset to gain insight into the behavior of digital currency and the underlying Blockchain technology. Blocks, transactions with potential multiple inputs and outputs, and flow of bitcoins between addresses, form a sophisticated real-time graph. This talk details a pipeline used to gather bitcoin transaction data and analyze it with powerful graph cloud database technologies. Visualization of Bitcoin Transactions for Forensic and Security Analysis | Alexandra Mai

14:47
Vortragende: Alexandra Mai | SBA Research „Time for PlanBTC“ – Visualization of Bitcoin Transactions for Forensic and Security Analysis The increasing dissatisfaction with central regulated currencies and the enormous increase in value let the cryptocurrency Bitcoin gain in importance over the last few years. Bitcoin is a peer-to-peer system with a publicly available decentralized database, the so-called Blockchain, were all transactions are stored. In my talk I present PlanBTC, a new way to display the transaction information of the Blockchain in an interactive form. The visualization gives a better understanding of the (pseudo-) anonymity and security of Bitcoins and it enables analysts to get an insight into past and current transactions. A special focus hereby is set on the time component, for a better understanding of chronological correlations, which helps the forensic and security analyst to understand cash flows. PlanBTC is a web-based prototype, which combines visualization techniques, clustering algorithms and statistical probabilities to provide exact security related information of the Blockchain. https://itsecx.fhstp.ac.at/

Bitcoin Transactions Help Police Track Down Dark Web Drug Dealer

02:17
Bitcoin Transactions Help Police Track Down Dark Web Drug Dealer A French national has pleaded guilty to selling narcotics on the dark web after police were able to trace his criminal activities through his bitcoin accounts. Police arrested 36-year-old Gal Vallerius in September at the Atlanta airport in the US while traveling to attend a beard and mustache competition, according to Bleeping Computer. Investigators said Vallerius, who used the name OxyMonster on the Dark Web, established a “tip jar” on the Dream Market marketplace. He did not use the marketplace’s internal payment systems that process transactions via a transaction anonymizer for collecting his tips. Police learned that 15 of 17 outgoing transactions from the tip jar went to bitcoin wallets that Vallerius kept on LocalBitcoins. This allowed them to determine he was OxyMonster. They also found similarities between Vallerius’ and OxyMonster’s writing styles on Twitter and Instagram. U.S. border agents seized Vallerius’ laptop when he visited the US in the fall and were able to confirm from his laptop that he was OxyMonster. Authorities also found other evidence on the laptop including a PGP encryption key he used to sign messages, Dream Market login credentials, and bitcoin wallets with addresses connected to OxyMonster vendor accounts. The criminal complaint identified OxyMonster as someone who sold cocaine, fentanyl, LSD, oxycodone and Methamphetamine. Vallerius Pleads Guilty Vallerius admitted selling oxycodone and Ritalin on the Dream Market and signed a guilty plea after trying for nine months to escape a lifetime prison sentence. He pleaded guilty to conspiracy to launder money and to possess with intent to distribute illicit goods and controlled substances. He faces a possible 20 years in prison, but not a lifetime sentence. According to investigators, Vallerius also used the name VanDeevp and had accounts on other marketplaces such as Evolution, Valhalla, TradRoute, Hansa Market and AlphaBay. ►A source https://www.instagram.com/bitcoin.info/ Bitcoin NEWS 🔵 🌐| Best bitcoin information🥇 📈| Bitcoin and Cryptocurrency earning ►Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/bitcoin.info/ ►Telegram: https://t.me/Bitco_info ►Subscribe to a channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCQPC5ra4hUizg8XXa1lF6Qg?sub_confirmation=1 $ bitcoin donation: 1GC79bdmPFW4tZWp8ZL8jpFVjaaTjbEUt9

What is The History of Bitcoin: Super Easy Explanation

12:11
What is The History of Bitcoin: Super Easy Explanation - https://blockgeeks.com/ We’ll start at the very beginning by understanding the history of blockchain. The very first blockchain in the world was Bitcoin. An anonymous person or group known as Satoshi Nakamoto published a document in an online cryptography forum in November 2008 and revealed the first details of how it would work, describing it as a “peer-to-peer electronic cash system”. The whitepaper is available today at bitcoin.org/bitcoin.pdf. It allows any 2 people to pseudonymously send money to each other no matter where they are in the world. It is a borderless currency. The main benefit of Bitcoin is that it does not require any centralized authority or institution to operate. This is in contrast to today’s centralized financial systems that depend on the existence of a central bank or government to mint money. If for any reason the central authority were to shutdown, the money would become worthless. In a decentralized system like Bitcoin, there is no central authority and the system can continue to operate as long as there are members in its peer-to-peer network. The goal of the whitepaper was to describe how the different parts of the Bitcoin protocol would operate and be kept secure. A new type of database, called a blockchain, would keep track of a single history of all Bitcoin transactions and it would be maintained by everyone in the network. The database would be publicly available for anyone to view and inspect, and anyone can download a copy of the same database. This provides data redundancy and makes sure the data is never lost, but also provides a way for anyone to verify the transactions in the database themselves. A block in the database just stores a sequence of transactions, and a sequence of blocks is called a blockchain. Each block is identified by an incrementing number and a unique Sha-256 hash. The hash for a block is calculated using the transactions inside it, as well as the previous block’s hash, which forms a chain of hashes. The data in the blocks is secured using a cryptographic algorithm called proof-of-work, which also keeps all members of the network and the database in sync to prevent double-spending. In this context, preventing double-spending means preventing anyone from spending money they dont have. Proof-of-work is used to generate new blocks for the database, also known as mining, and the reward for mining a new block is given to the miner by creating new Bitcoins in the system. This is the only way new Bitcoins can be created. Anyone on the network can be a miner and a new block is mined roughly every 10 minutes, which includes the latest set of verified transactions. The first release for Bitcoin was version 0.1 written in C++ by Satoshi and published on SourceForge in January 2009 under the open-source MIT license. Anyone could download the source code and run it to join the network, also known as becoming a node in the network. This is the original version 0.1 source code written by Satoshi. We can see the hard-coded genesis block, which is the very first block in the chain. The hash for the block can be verified by using any Bitcoin blockchain explorer. Let’s copy and paste this hash into the blockchain explorer available at blockchain.info. We can see that this hash is for block number 0, and that it has only one transaction in it which is the mining reward, and the reward amount of 50 Bitcoin was given to this Bitcoin address. We can also see this 50 Bitcoin reward for the genesis block in the original source code. The genesis block is a special case needed to start the blockchain and is the only block that is hard-coded, whereas every subsequent block is calculated using proof-of-work. Satoshi’s motivation for creating Bitcoin is revealed in the piece of data he included in the genesis block: a newspaper headline from The Times that read ‘Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks’. The date of the newspaper is proof that the genesis block was created on or after Jan 3 2009. Satoshi developed the source code mostly himself up until mid-2010, when he handed it off to the open-source community. It is now maintained under the project called Bitcoin Core. The software is currently at version 0.15.1 and is available for download at bitcoin.org. This is still the most popular Bitcoin client, and its estimated that there are over 10 thousand nodes running the Bitcoin network today using various clients. Satoshi disappeared from public view in late 2010, his identity still unknown to this day. The only way someone could prove that they are Satoshi is by using the same encryption keys used when posting the original whitepaper in the online cryptography forum. MRMCD2017 The Facebook of financial transactions - User tracking on the bitcoin blockchain

48:09
https://media.ccc.de/v/FWTYS3 Bitcoin has gained widespread interest for anonymous payments in recent times, driving the prices for a bitcoin through the roof. Those prices are generally rising correlated with waves of ransomware, as bitcoin is the most common way of paying those ransoms. After all, it's an anonymous currency, perfect for anonymous payments, isn't it? In this talk, we will challenge the assumption of anonymity of the bitcoin network and see what conclusions can be drawn from the publicly available Bitcoin blockchain. We will discuss options to track bitcoins, evaluate the possibilities to attribute addresses and transactions to users and their interactions with one another. We will also take a look at how to characterize payments in the blockchain and what conclusions we can draw from that about the usage of Bitcoin as a cryptocurrency. No previous knowledge about Bitcoin is necessary, a brief review of the properties of the bitcoin blockchain will be included in the talk to set the necessary starting point for everyone interested in the topic. cherti
