Are you constantly irritated, frustrated or aggressive. Well, this means you are so stressed. Stress is a part of life and if you are stressed, whether by your job or by something more personal then there's always a solution to a problem. But, not taking control of the situation and doing nothing will make your problems worse. So here are some stress busting techniques for you. 1. Exercise - Be Active Exercise in almost any form can act as a stress reliever. It won't make your stress disappear but being active can definitely boost your feel good endorphin and take you away from your daily worries. So be it a 40 minutes of brisk walking, yoga , aerobics or some laps in the pool you will find that you have forgotten the day's irritation and concentrating on your body. The results are - energy, optimism, calm mind and fit body. 2. Connect with people A problem shared is a problem halved. A good support network of colleagues, friends and family can ease your work troubles and help you see in a different way. If you don't connect with people, you won't have support to turn to when you need help. The activities we do with friends help us relax and we often have a good laugh with them., which is an excellent stress reliever And may be your friends or collegues can also help you out with some solutions to your problems. 3. Avoid unhealthy habits Don't rely on alcohol, smoking and caffeine as your ways of coping. This will not help you to relieve any stress in fact it will create new problems. It might provide temporary relief but it won't make the problems disappear. Drink plenty of water and eat healthy small nutritious means. Hunger and dehydration provokes anxiety and stress. So stay fit and healthy. 4. BE positive Look for positives in life and things for which you are grateful. Write down three things at the end of everyday which went well and for which you are grateful. People don't always appreciate what they have. They always tend to crib and complain about everything. Make a conscious effort to train yourself to be more positive about life. Change your perspective and you will be able to see your situation from a more positive point of view. 5. Plan something Rewarding at the end of your stressful day Rewards like taking a hot water bath or half an hour of reading a good book or even watching your favorite T.V show helps. So basically I am talking about some me time. Put aside work , housekeeping and family concerns for brief period before bed time. Don't spend this time planning for the next day or doing house chores. Remember you need time to recharge and energize yourself. You will be much prepared to face the next day. But things are probably not as bad as they seem… take a deep breath and listen to our suggestions for dealing with exam stress…. Firstly, think about what exactly is stressing you out? It might be just one thing that you can put right – maybe it's just vocabulary that's worrying you, so pay more attention to revising that. It could be just lack of sleep that's stopping you from concentrating. Next, learn to recognise when you're getting stressed. Take a break and talk to someone who will understand your situation – a friend, teacher or maybe your parents. Talking to someone is a great way to help you see straight. Although working with fellow students has its benefits, don't compare your abilities with theirs. Everyone learns in different ways and at different speeds. If you're sure you've got the right revision strategy then you'll be ok. If not, get advice. And when you've been stuck behind your desk, stressing out, go and do some exercise. Nothing de-stresses the mind faster than physical activity, so make it part of your studying timetable. Fresh air will clear your head and perk you up. And be honest with yourself. Are you setting yourself difficult goals? Be realistic – how much more revising can you do, how much more can you remember? How do you deal with stress especially at the workplace? Can you work under pressure? How would you answer this question at your interview? So this is always a difficult question. Given the fact that a lot of times we have not figured out how to handle stress, and with everything going on your own life Stress Management does take a back seat. but what I'm going to discuss will probably give you the answer and also give you tips on managing your own stress. with any interview answer do you need to have a structure to it. first what I call the opening transition sentence. then you start off by acknowledging the question. then you analyze the question. Then you provide an objective answer and then you ease it up and try to act as a normal human and in the process if you can throw in a real life example then that would be the icing on the cake. so I would start off as the following: Very pertinent question, thanks for asking, so I fully agree that the medical profession is innately stressful and it is one the most demanding and stressful occupation . however I have come to appreciate and realize when I am confronted with any stressor, it may be the general time pressure and crunch or the level of difficulty that are complicated patient may present with. or it could be individual occurrences that lead to a stressful environment. one thing I have realized that during my working hours or when I am on call I take things step by step, and do things on a task by task basis. which helps me complete my work and also helps me realize that the stressful situation or the excessive workload is being handled and it will be taken care of eventually and in this manner I do not feel overwhelmed. this leads myself to be productive and calculated. this also reduces the general Stress and Anxiety that we all feel in our daily lives. basically this approach helps me perform better. and when I am not at work I try to take it easy and relax and enjoy myself and as needed take time off whenever possible. I exercise regularly and that is a way for me to distance myself from other aspects of life. but one thing I relish the most is the company of good friends at least once a week where you can laugh and Let It Go. I believe having a social life totally disconnected from work does help greatly" Ok so I think that should cover it. but again this is my take on this question and pick what you like and discard what you don't. but keep in mind try not to copy word to word as a lot of people will be listening and taking notes. but try to use some of this information in accordance with your own lifestyle and habits and trying to incorporate some of the ideas and points. But again the interview process itself could be a stressful situation however taking it objectively I think you may even enjoy preparing for your interview. and if you prepare well enough that would make you confident even further and confidence leads to less stress. My intention here is to help managers become leaders. With that out of the way, as a leader you could be watching this video for one of two reasons. You’re either feeling a little stress yourself from work or perhaps you’ve noticed one of your staff members seeming stressed. Either way, this is a great first step. I came across an article from the American Psychological Association regarding stresses and work that I found very interesting. I’m going to link the article in the description. Anyway, I think it’s obvious that stress of some form will always be present at work but according to the American Psychological Association, they did a study in 2012 and found that upwards of 65% of Americans said work was their top stress. That’s a lot of work stress. And what’s worse is most workplaces don’t really help you deal with this stress. So let’s look at a few of top workplace stresses shall we? Low salaries-most divorces are due to finances - just saying Too much work- and I’m not talking about people bitching and moaning cause of the job but they are literally doing the work of 2 sometimes 3 people Little opportunity for growth. - it’s kind of a dead end job and you can’t really expand or develop as you’d like Work is boring and you’re not being challenged. For me, I think of factory jobs. Not that there is anything wrong with such jobs but it just gives me the heeby jeebies. And finally one that bothered me a lot in years past is conflicting demands or unclear expectations. It can be very stressful when one supervisor expects work to be completed one way yet a different supervisor wants it completely different.... so annoying! In the short term these stresses can cause headaches, stomach aches, poor sleep quality, and a short temper . In the long term you could develop anxiety, depression, high blood pressure, weight gain and many others. So, what are you gonna do about it? Well, according to this article you should do or promote the following... track the stress... write a journal or create an EverNote on your phone for a week or two and write down everything that’s creating high stress. A little pressure is fine but real stresses need to be documented. Write down what’s going on, where you are, who’s there, how you’re feeling and what you’re thinking. The more details the better. Also write how you acted or reacted. Did you yell, did you eat, or go for a walk? Writing things down can help you spot patterns. Create a solid response plan. This is all going to be stuff you know you “should” do but knowing and doing are two different things. First, get physical. Start working out, wether it be weights or classes at the local gym or just walking in your neighborhood, you need to get the blood flowing. Also they say to get hobbies. This could be anything but it’s basically to get work off your mind and to create another center to your life. Work is part of your life but not the end all be all. For me, fishing is my go to. I don’t care what’s going on at work or around me, put me on my boat with a fishing pole in hand, turn on a little country music and I’m good to go! Another healthy habit is to get enough sleep. Enough sleep varies for everyone but figure it out for yourself and then stick to it. Draw a line in the sand. It’s easy answer emails at home or take calls while you’re out and about but you must set boundaries.

3 Tips for Managing Stress with Brian Mackenzie

In nature, animals experience and deal with stress in a very different way than humans. The story of the lion hunting the antelope is a great example of this. When the lion attacks the antelope, both animals go into a sympathetic state where their senses and stress are heightened. Even if the antelope gets away, both animals downregulate shortly after and become parasympathetic. The main difference between animals and humans is that once the stressful activity is over, humans tend to hang on to the stress and do not downregulate shortly after the stressor is over, leaving them in a sympathetic state for longer than necessary. Parasympathetic State vs. Sympathetic State The Parasympathetic Nervous System controls homeostasis in the body and restores he body to a calm state. This nervous system activates the “rest and digest” response that decreases hear rate and allows the body to repair and relax. The Sympathetic Nervous System controls the body’s response to a perceived threat or stressful situation. This nervous system activates the “fight or flight” response that increases heart rate and prepares the body to speed up and become more alert/tense - functions that are not immediately essential (ie. digestion and immune system) shut down. While this system does provide a purpose by protecting us from dangers and allowing us to be better able to respond to challenges, it’s best not to stay in this state for too long, as doing so takes a toll on the body. With so many demands, it’s hard to let stressors go so easily like animals do. Brian Mackenzie shares some easy tips for managing stress and downregulating at the end of the day. Stress has a very negative impact on our bodies, it’s important to find ways to manage stress on a daily basis so we can live our healthiest lives. Tips for Managing Stress 1. Focus on what you enjoy One of the easiest things you can do is figure out what you enjoy about each activity you do, whether it’s work, working out, or playing. Focus your thoughts on what you enjoy and create a habit out of that. It might take 3 or 4 weeks but sticking to things that make you happy about what you’re doing while involved in a stressful situation will allow you to downregulate and get into that parasympathetic state very quickly. 2. Be in the moment Continuing to think about stressful situations after they are over keeps the body in a very sympathetic state. It’s easy to think about all the tasks that didn’t get finished at work, getting the kids ready for beds, and other daily stressors. As hard as it may be, we need to learn how to shut these thoughts off. If we learn to live in each moment and take it for what it is, managing stress is absolutely achieveable. Stress comes in when we are not in the moment. We need to let things go and stop either living in the past or the future, the past is depression, the future is anxiety. If we can stay in the moment, stress is fine, but then you have to know how to let it go and move on to the next activity so the body learns how to regulate itself. 3. Downregulate Brian’s favorite method for downregulating at the end of the day is to set aside the phone and do a simple breathing routine before going to sleep (ratio - 1 inhale: 4 breath hold: 2 exhale). Repeat this pattern for about 5 or 10 minutes and you will really notice your heart rate and body start to down shift and let things go. This technique is something that can easily be use for managing stress in any situation. You can really trick your body into downregulating and dropping everything so your body can go back into a very calm state and do what it’s supposed to do, which is recover.
