It is sometimes difficult to understand the meaning of an idiom when you hear it for the first time. Idioms have both a literal meaning and a figurative meaning, yet it is the figurative meaning that is what the speaker wants to communicate. The literal meaning is not so important. In this video, Teela explains the meanings of 5 common idioms so that you will understand them better and be able to use them more easily in your conversations with others: once in a blue moon beside yourself deep down be the light of one's life let your hair down If you can understand and use these idioms easily, then you are one step closer to English fluency. What is SEMANTIC TRANSLATION? What does SEMANTIC TRANSLATION mean?

02:45
What is SEMANTIC TRANSLATION? What does SEMANTIC TRANSLATION mean? SEMANTIC TRANSLATION meaning - SEMANTIC TRANSLATION definition - SEMANTIC TRANSLATION explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Semantic translation is the process of using semantic information to aid in the translation of data in one representation or data model to another representation or data model. Semantic translation takes advantage of semantics that associate meaning with individual data elements in one dictionary to create an equivalent meaning in a second system. An example of semantic translation is the conversion of XML data from one data model to a second data model using formal ontologies for each system such as the Web Ontology Language (OWL). This is frequently required by intelligent agents that wish to perform searches on remote computer systems that use different data models to store their data elements. The process of allowing a single user to search multiple systems with a single search request is also known as federated search. Semantic translation should be differentiated from data mapping tools that do simple one-to-one translation of data from one system to another without actually associating meaning with each data element. Semantic translation requires that data elements in the source and destination systems have "semantic mappings" to a central registry or registries of data elements. The simplest mapping is of course where there is equivalence. There are three types of Semantic equivalence: 1. Class Equivalence - indicating that class or "concepts" are equivalent. For example: "Person" is the same as "Individual" 2. Property Equivalence - indicating that two properties are equivalent. For example: "PersonGivenName" is the same as "FirstName" 3. Instance Equivalence - indicating that two individual instances of objects are equivalent. For example: "Dan Smith" is the same person as "Daniel Smith" Semantic translation is very difficult if the terms in a particular data model do not have direct one-to-one mappings to data elements in a foreign data model. In that situation an alternative approach must be used to find mappings from the original data to the foreign data elements. This problem can be alleviated by centralized metadata registries that use the ISO-11179 standards such as the National Information Exchange Model (NIEM).

What to Say When Someone is Rude in English (with 4 Simple Strategies)

12:25
Have you ever felt shocked when a colleague, friend, salesperson or stranger says something like, “Wow, you look terrible!” or “That’s not a great haircut on you.” Or someone gets impatient and rude with you because you’re struggling with how to express yourself in English. How do you deal with rude people or rude comments? Today you’re going to learn exactly what to say when someone is rude in English with four simple strategies and the language you need to respond. The truth is, people may say rude things in different situations, for different reasons. Sometimes they know they are being rude and sometimes they have no idea how inconsiderate or disrespectful they are being. Regardless of the reason the key thing is to always stay calm before you respond. Staying calm and making a good choice about how to handle it gives you the best chance to manage the situation well. So, before you react in anger or hurt, take a deep breath, count to ten and confidently choose how you wish to respond. But here’s one important truth: Kindness always wins. 📝 Get the full lesson at https://www.speakconfidentenglish.com/what-to-say-when-someone-is-rude/ 💡Lesson on How to Be Assertive in English: https://www.speakconfidentenglish.com/be-assertive-in-english/ ___________________________________________________________________ Start building your English confidence for work and daily life: ⚡️Free Training: How to Say What You Want in English http://bit.ly/say-what-you-want-in-English ⚡️Free Training: Surprising Secrets for Confident Job Interviews in English http://bit.ly/english_job_interviews ———————————————————————————————————————————————— Let's Stay Connected:👇🏼 📢WEBSITE: https://www.speakconfidentenglish.com/ 📷 PINTEREST: https://www.pinterest.com/spkconfidenteng/ ♥️FACEBOOK: https://www.facebook.com/speakconfidentenglish/ 🖇LINKEDIN: https://www.linkedin.com/company/speak-confident-english/ - ——————————————————————————————————————————————— Common Questions: 🌏 Where are you from? Learn 6 Body Idioms in English: get cold feet, play by ear...

06:27
I'm going to stick my neck out and say that you probably don't know of what some of these idioms mean. But don't worry, let your hair down and we'll have some fun with these everyday English idioms that involve body parts, including "get cold feet", "get something off your chest", "play it by ear", and more. I'll give you real-life examples of how these expressions are used in daily conversations, so you'll never feel like you're in over your head! Take the QUIZ: http://www.engvid.com/6-body-idioms-in-english/ TRANSCRIPT Hi. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. My name's Adam. Today's lesson is going to be about idioms, everyday idioms that you will hear people use quite regularly in many situations, and we're going to look at body idioms. All of these idioms have some part of the body inside them. Now, again, just a little refresh... To refresh our memories: What is an idiom? An idiom is an expression whose words alone don't mean what the actual idiom means. What that means is the words themselves and the actual meaning of the idiom are completely different. So, for example: "to get cold feet". Now, of course, in the wintertime if you take your socks off, your feet are going to get cold, but that's not what this means. "To get cold feet" means to get scared. You're about to do something, you've been planning it, you know it's coming, you want to do it, but then at the last minute, you get cold feet. It means you get scared and you don't want to do it anymore; you want to back away from doing this. Okay? You want to back out of it. So, the most common example of getting cold feet is just before your wedding, and this happens to a lot of men. Tomorrow's the wedding, let's say, I'm getting married tomorrow, and tonight I'm thinking: "Oh my god, this is my last night of freedom. I don't want to do it. Forget it. Wedding's off." So I have cold feet. Very common, happens to a lot of people. Doesn't have to be about wedding, it could be about anything; you're about to start a new job, you're about to move to a new house, you're about to do anything - last minute, you get scared, you don't want to do it anymore. "To get something off one's chest", to get something off your chest. Now, this sounds like pretty straightforward, but if you have something on your chest it means you're holding it and it's very heavy, and you really just want to... You just want to get it out. You want to express something. It could be a secret, it could be a feeling you have for someone, it could be a complaint you have, but you just didn't want to say it. You've been holding it inside and holding it inside, and it's been sitting right here, and it's heavy, and you don't want to carry it anymore. You want to get it off your chest. So, you go into your boss and you say: "Boss, I got to get something off my chest. You're a terrible boss. I don't want to work for you anymore. Either pay me a lot more money or I'm leaving." Or there's a girl you really like or a boy you really like, and you go up to this person and you say: "I have to get something off my chest. I've been in love with you for like five years. I can't hold it inside anymore. I have to get it off my chest, so I'm telling you." Okay? Then you feel much lighter, in theory. "To be in over one's head". Over one's head. Now, technically, if you go into the swimming pool and you go below the surface of the water, then you're in over your head, but it's the same idea in other situations. If you're doing something that you can't handle, it's too difficult for you, then you're in over your head. So, for example, you got a job... You just finished university, you got a job, and somebody hired you to be the manager of a whole department, and you think: "Yeah, no problem. I can do this." You have no experience doing it, but yeah, you can do it. So you go and it's... Right away you notice that it's too difficult for you, you don't know what you're doing. The staff don't like you, they don't respect you, they don't listen to you. You don't know what to do because you're in over your head. You've taken on a job that's too big for you. Okay? "To let one's hair down". Now, this obviously sounds like it should be for women, but it could be for men, too. "To let your hair down" means to relax, just go do something fun, enjoy yourself, do whatever you want. We... Generally, we do use this for women. For men, we say: "Loosen your tie". It's the same idea. "To loosen the tie" means relax, don't be so serious, don't be so stiff. Relax, have fun, do whatever you want. Tomorrow's another day, so let your hair down. "To stick one's neck out". So if you stick... If I stick my neck out, you can come and chop it off, and I'm dead. So, "to stick one's neck out" is to take a risk, to take a big risk. So if you... If you gamble, if you invest in something and you put all your money into this investment, then you're sticking your neck out.

The Reading Strategy Every English Learner Needs to Know (Step-by-Step Guide)

07:51
This lesson explains how you can improve your English through reading. This is a powerful method so be sure to watch the whole video! Get your fluency book here: https://www.tofluency.com/book (it's FREE to download!) Here is a question that a lot of learners struggle with: do you stop reading to look up the definition or just continue? This highlights the difference between: Intensive reading: when you read to learn new words and analyze the language. Extensive reading: where you don't stop and you read for pleasure. More on my reading for fluency method soon but first... HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT BOOK FOR YOU: 1. The genre: the category. Choose books that interest you. 2. The level of the book: if it's too difficult to understand, you won't enjoy it and it won't help you. Choose graded readers. See here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-o7DTuOYn0o 3. Books you enjoy: if you don't enjoy the book, put it down. FINDING BOOKS (GREAT TIP!) Go to https://www.amazon.com and "look inside" a book that you may enjoy. Start reading it and get it if you think it's appropriate. Find books with audiobooks too. INTENSIVE vs EXTENSIVE READING: I recommend that you do both. Here is how: 1. Read extensively but highlight words (sentences that you don't understand) 2. Do this for each chapter or for a certain number of pages 3. Go back and look up anything you don't understand BONUS TIP: Take the sentences that you have highlighted and use Anki - https://apps.ankiweb.net/ - to create flashcards. This is a way to internalize the new language and grammar. More on this here: https://www.tofluency.com/speaking/ - or get the premium method below. ENGLISH FLUENCY PROGRAM: My program gives you the method that will dramatically improve your speaking, grammar, and pronunciation and the materials you need to follow this method. This method works and if you are ready to FINALLY speak English with confidence, I would love to have you. 1 Simple Method to Increase Your Vocabulary | The 3R Technique | How to Improve Your Vocabulary

Transcript: Hello and welcome. In this lesson, I’m going to teach you 1 simple method that you can use to increase your vocabulary. This is the technique that I teach my students, and this is also what I use personally to learn new words – so I know that this works. So what is this technique? Well, it’s the 3R method. It’s called 3R because there are three steps: Read, Record and Review. I will show you how to do all three of these correctly to get the best results. So let’s talk about the first step: Read. If there’s one secret to building your vocabulary, it’s reading. There is simply no better way. You should aim to read for an hour per day. If that’s difficult, do at least half an hour, i.e. 30 minutes but one hour per day will give you the most benefit. Now I’m not talking about reading the newspaper or studying textbooks. That kind of reading is good but it’s not the best way to learn new words. For that, you need to read what is interesting. So here’s an idea: pick something that you’re really interested in. Like sports, movies, music, cars, fitness, fashion, electronics etc. - whatever you feel passionate about. Then find material that you will enjoy reading. Some great examples are magazines, novels, short stories or biographies related to your topic. And don’t forget the internet – one of my favorite places for reading online is Wikipedia. There are millions of articles on this site and whatever your topic of interest is, you can go on Wikipedia and find articles to read. Now, there’s something really important. When you read (whether it’s books or online material), there will be many words that are difficult – that you don’t understand. But don’t look up every single one of these in a dictionary. Because that will distract you and make you bored. Instead, your focus should be to just understand the overall idea of what you are reading. For any difficult words, try to guess the meaning from the surrounding information. If you cannot, mark them with a pencil, or write them down and you can come back to them after you finish reading. After you have finished reading, you move on to step 2 – record. This is where you collect new words. So now, you go back to the text you read and find words to learn – there are two types of words that you can learn – unknown words (words that you don’t know), and inactive words (these are words that you have seen before but you’re not sure how to use). Aim to collect about 5-10 new words every day. Once you have the words, you’re going to note them down in a notebook, on your computer (in a Microsoft Word or Excel file) or even your smartphone (there are many apps that will let you save and learn vocabulary). Start by taking your first word and look it up in a dictionary. I personally prefer to use online dictionaries like Cambridge, Oxford or Merriam-Webster. And now, you can start to record the word. Let’s look at the best way to do that. In your notebook or file, first write the word - let’s say ‘creative’ is the word you’re learning. From your dictionary, you should then write what part of speech it is (that is, whether it’s a noun, verb, adjective, adverb etc.). This word is an adjective. Then you write its definition – ‘creative’ means ‘having the ability to produce original ideas’ - it can describe people or activities. Then you note any example sentences that you can find or you can make sentences of your own. Here are a couple of examples: “Frank Zappa was a highly creative musician.” “Children enjoy doing creative activities.” Along with this, you should also note down the correct pronunciation of the word in phonetic symbols. This word is pronounced /kri ˈeɪ.tɪv/. There are three syllables – /kri/, /eɪ/, and /tɪv/ with the stress on /eɪ/ – /kriˈeɪ.tɪv/. You might not know these symbols very well, that’s OK. With the dictionary, practice the correct pronunciation a few times, then copy the symbols. Over time, you will become comfortable with them. It’s also a good idea to make a note of the reference – that is, where you learned the word: which book, website etc. Because, later, when you are reviewing the word, you can more easily recall where you saw it, and you can also go to the same website or book if you want to check how it’s used. You should also try to find and note down the different forms of the word. For example, we said that the word ‘creative’ is an adjective. But it has other forms too.

28:39
Start speaking fluent English confidently - http://www.bit.ly/2gupuGO Did you know that there’s just 1 simple trick to becoming a fluent English speaker? Just 1 thing you must change about the way you learn to… Have your words came out naturally and automatically – without hesitation – as if English were your first language, every time you speak… Express your exact thoughts spontaneously, continuously and in detail, without being forced to change what you want to say – or only speak in simple sentences – because you can’t find the right words… Understand everything you hear in English movies, TV shows, music and conversations, and finally speak confidently – without ever feeling nervous or worried about mistakes – with the smooth pronunciation of a native speaker… And best of all, this 1 easy change in the way you learn will help you experience immediate improvement in your spoken English so you’ll finally be certain that you’re learning the right way. But before I reveal this trick, I’d like you to know why so many English learners have problems with their English and struggle to become fluent Speakers… Why do so many English learners often use words that sound unnatural in conversations? What’s the reason they often have to think about what grammar rules to use before speaking? What stops them from speaking smoothly and clearly? The answer to all of these questions is, in 3 words… How They Learn You see, traditional language learning methods only give English learners part of the fluency puzzle… Lessons teach them grammar rules, but not how to use grammar without thinking when they speak. Students learn English through their own language, so they’re trained to hesitate and translate in their heads during conversations. They learn to read and write the formal English of textbooks, but get very little training listening to – and speaking – casual, conversational, spoken English. So, what is the 1 simple trick to becoming a successful English speaker? It’s to learn English like native speakers. Fluency is nothing more than a collection of habits, like using grammar without thinking, or pronouncing words correctly. So, all you need to do to develop the same habits native speakers have is to learn the same way native speakers learn… When you learn English like native speakers, you master grammar automatically – without grammar tables and boring drills – through visual examples and stories. Building fluency like a native speaker means you also learn slang, idioms, phrasal verbs and other conversational, spoken English expressions, in addition to what’s appropriate for writing. Learning English the native way means you learn to speak fluent English naturally, actually practicing with native English speakers and building speaking confidence in the real world. When you learn this way, it’s easy, fun, fast and doesn’t feel like studying at all, just like how you learned your own native language… Now that you know that you must change the way you learn if you want to get fluent – because the traditional methods you’ve been using until now have not helped you become a confident speaker – how can you start developing the habits of a native English speaker so you can start speaking fluent English confidently?
