In thinking strategically about a company, managers of all types of businesses must develop a clear understanding of what moves and approaches will be employed to gain advantage in the marketplace. A organization's strategy explains why the company matters by specifying an approach to creating superior value and determining how capabilities and resources will be utilized to deliver the desired value. In effect, the crafting of a strategy represents a managerial commitment to pursuing an array of choices about how to compete. In most industries, companies have considerable freedom in choosing the how's of strategy. A company’s business model sets forth how its strategy and operating approaches will create value for customers, while at the same time generating ample revenues to cover costs and realizing a profit. The nitty-gritty issue surrounding a company’s business model is whether it can execute its customer value proposition profitably. Just because company managers have crafted a strategy for competing and running the business does not automatically mean the strategy will lead to profitability - it may or it may not. Competitive advantage is a condition or circumstance that puts a company in a favorable or superior business position. Strategy leaders need to understand these five strategic approaches to setting an organization apart and winning competitive advantage. A company achieves sustainable competitive advantage when an attractively large number of buyers develop a durable preference for its products or services over the offerings of competitors, despite the efforts of competitors to overcome or erode its advantage. Regardless of whether a company’s strategy changes gradually or swiftly, the important point is that the task of crafting strategy is not a onetime event but is always a work in progress. Winning companies create value by defining, developing and deploying a set of strategic capabilities that provide a unique competitive advantage. A winning strategy must fit the company’s external and internal situation, build sustainable competitive advantage, and improve company performance. Companies don’t get to the top of the industry rankings or stay there with illogical strategies, copycat strategies, or timid attempts to try to do better. How well a company performs is directly attributable to the caliber of its strategy and the proficiency with which the strategy is executed.

Dr. Vladimir Kvint defines strategy as "a system of finding, formulating, and developing a doctrine that will ensure long-term success if followed faithfully." Corporate strategy involves answering a key question from a portfolio perspective: "What business should we be in?" Business strategy involves answering the question: "How shall we compete in this business?" In management theory and practice, a further distinction is often made between strategic management and operational management. Operational management is concerned primarily with improving efficiency and controlling costs within the boundaries set by the organization's strategy. Strategic management involves the formulation and implementation of the major goals and initiatives taken by a company's top management on behalf of owners, based on consideration of resources and an assessment of the internal and external environments in which the organization competes. Strategy is defined as "the determination of the basic long-term goals of an enterprise, and the adoption of courses of action and the allocation of resources necessary for carrying out these goals." Strategies are established to set direction, focus effort, define or clarify the organization, and provide consistency or guidance in response to the environment. Strategic management involves the related concepts of strategic planning and strategic thinking. Strategic planning is analytical in nature and refers to formalized procedures to produce the data and analyses used as inputs for strategic thinking, which synthesizes the data resulting in the strategy. Strategic planning may also refer to control mechanisms used to implement the strategy once it is determined. In other words, strategic planning happens around the strategic thinking or strategy making activity. Strategic management is often described as involving two major processes: formulation and implementation of strategy. While described sequentially below, in practice the two processes are iterative and each provides input for the other.

In modern organizations with flatter hierarchical structures, these high impact teams are smaller, more agile, and themselves structured to benefit from individual specialization without regard for a ‘pecking order’. Even though these teams are designed to provide maximum flexibility in a constantly changing environment, it is likely that an organization will still experience resistance to change. Overcoming resistance to change in the workplace doesn’t have to be a constant battle. Even though change is ever present, both in the market and within organizations transition does not need to be a struggle, especially regarding those that will help the team in the long run. With a forward looking and proactive strategy, resistance to change is first reduced and then eliminated. 7 things to do to eliminate resistance to change Leadership is an organizational imperative when managing change, and leaders who inspire a cultural shift in their staff have the greatest success in managing change. In a 2013 PwC survey, nearly two thirds of staff surveyed felt that a top leader is in charge of change management and almost half felt that top leaders should be in charge of cultural change. The good news here is that the same number of people who felt that cultural change is also their responsibility. The bad news is that only 14% saw any responsibility for change management falling on their shoulders. The harsh reality is that effective change is determined by having in place a corporate culture conducive to change. It is here that inspirational leadership in flat hierarchical structures is, perhaps, at its most potent. Here are seven strategies for overcoming resistance to change in the workplace: 1. Structure the team to maximize its potential Give team members appropriate roles and responsibilities that use skills to their best advantage, while also providing the potential for personal and team development. 2. Set challenging, achievable, and engaging targets Be clear in guidance about goals and targets. Break change projects into smaller milestones, and celebrate achievements. Goals should be seen as progressive and in line with values and beliefs. 3. Resolve conflicts quickly and effectively Utilize the seven methods of care-fronting to regulate and control communicative breakdowns. Encourage openness and honesty and engender an environment of mutual trust and respect. 4. Show passion Communicate passionately and be an example of belief in the future vision. When other people see leaders’ behaviors emulating those required by change, they more quickly come into line with the new behaviors and become change advocates themselves. 5. Be persuasive Engage employees in change by being an energized leader. Focus on opportunities and persuade rather than assert authority. Share experiences as you persuade change through stories that focus on positive change. 6. Empower innovation and creativity Give opportunities for feedback and remain flexible as you alter course toward your change goals. Encourage people to be creative, discover solutions to unfolding problems, and to become part of the change process. The process is difficult for everyone involved, and your team will be more invested with solutions they have created themselves, rather than those dictated to them. 7. Remain positive and supportive People find change unsettling, even though change is a constant in personal lives as well as professional environments. They will need the support of a positive leader who inspires free thought, honest communication, and creativity as personal and team development is encouraged. Employees expect leaders to manage change. Inspirational leaders create a culture where change becomes the responsibility of all. I can’t tell you how many managers and business leaders come to me and say, "I need you to train my salespeople because they're doing a terrible job." Now, that may sound logical to some people at first. But it's completely illogical when you really think about it. The reality is, there are probably some people on that team who shouldn't even be there. And so, before we ever get into sales training, we want to first assess the existing sales organization. Sales Management Training Tip #2: Use a process for identifying superior talent. You may not be actively involved in the sales hiring process at your organization. But if you're a manager or even the CEO of a good sized organization, you need to make sure that the process for hiring talent is going to yield superior performers. That means having a systematic process for hiring with multiple steps that force potential sales hires to demonstrate their selling ability. This is something I implement with my clients all the time, because we need to ensure the people we're hiring are going to be the right fit. Sales Management Training Tip #3: Know the strategic math to grow your sales. Every manager, CEO, and sales leader must understand the exact math that goes into increasing sales. There are only three ways to actually increase sales. Sales Management Training Tip #4: Implement leveraged prospecting. So many CEOs and sales leaders come to me and say, “I want our salespeople to be making more cold calls." My first response is always, "Well, help me understand. Is cold calling the most effective use of their time?" Now, in some cases, it can be — but very rarely. Sales Management Training Tip #5: Have a structured sales process. This is a tough one. Many organizations are all over the place when it comes to sales process, so at the end of the day, they just end up letting their salespeople do whatever they want. Sales Management Training Tip #6: Track discovery meetings closely. Managers, CEOs, CSOs, and VPs of sales always ask me, "Marc, what is the most important KPI or what's the most important metric that we can be tracking of our salespeople?" There is no one right answer to that question, but if I were to generalize one answer that is accurate for most organizations, it would be the number of discovery meetings that salespeople are setting. Discovery meetings are those initial sales meetings that are in the calendar for that first introduction. Sales Management Training Tip #7: Let your CRM do the heavy lifting. I always ask managers, owners, and CEOs the same question: "Do you know exactly what your salespeople are doing on a day-to-day basis?" What's amazing is that they often can’t answer that question in the affirmative. Sales Management Training Tip #8: Run a structured sales meeting. Have you ever been in a meeting that was just completely unstructured? Suddenly, you look at your watch, and it's been 90 minutes. You've accomplished exactly nothing. Well, this may be the experience that your salespeople have when they sit in on your sales meetings. Sales Management Training Tip #9: Coach with intention. Coaching is one of those things that most managers know they need to be doing more of it. Yet, they don't do much of it at all. It tends to be very reactive. As managers, when we coach with intention, it means that we have a systematic process to coaching people. Whether you're the CEO managing the VP level, or you're the VP managing your managers, or you're the manager managing your salespeople, or you're the business owner managing your own salespeople, you need to be coaching with intention.
