The collapse of Venezuela, explained

07:31
The country is in chaos, but its leaders aren't going anywhere. Correction at 1:58: It’s been brought to our notice that the Supreme Court tried to strip the country’s National Assembly of its powers in March 2017 and not 2016. We regret the error. Subscribe to our channel! http://goo.gl/0bsAjO Venezuela was once the richest country in Latin America. It has the largest known oil reserves in the world and its democratic government was once praised world wide. But today, Venezuela’s democratic institutions and its economy are in shambles. The country has the highest inflation in the world, making food and medicine inaccessible to most Venezuelans. Over the last four years, its GDP has fallen 35%, which is a sharper drop than the one seen during the Great Depression in the US. The country’s murder rate has surpassed that of the most dangerous cities in the world. These conditions have sparked months of protests against the president, Nicolas Maduro. And it’s easy to see why: the country has become measurably worse since his election in 2013. What is DIGITAL ECONOMY? What does DIGITAL ECONOMY mean? DIGITAL ECONOMY meaning & explanation

04:32
What is DIGITAL ECONOMY? What does DIGITAL ECONOMY mean? DIGITAL ECONOMY meaning - DIGITAL ECONOMY definition - DIGITAL ECONOMY explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SUBSCRIBE to our Google Earth flights channel - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6UuCPh7GrXznZi0Hz2YQnQ Digital economy refers to an economy that is based on digital computing technologies. The digital economy is also sometimes called the Internet Economy, the New Economy, or Web Economy. Increasingly, the "digital economy" is intertwined with the traditional economy making a clear delineation harder. The term 'Digital Economy' was coined in Don Tapscott's 1995 book The Digital Economy : Promise and Peril in the Age of Networked Intelligence. The Digital Economy was among the first books to consider how the Internet would change the way we did business. According to Thomas Mesenbourg (2001), three main components of the 'Digital Economy' concept can be identified: e-business infrastructure (hardware, software, telecoms, networks, human capital, etc.), e-business (how business is conducted, any process that an organization conducts over computer-mediated networks), e-commerce (transfer of goods, for example when a book is sold online). But, as Bill Imlah comments, new applications are blurring these boundaries and adding complexity; for example, consider social media and Internet search. In the last decade of the 20th century. Nicholas Negroponte (1995) used a metaphor of shifting from processing atoms to processing bits. "The problem is simple. When information is embodied in atoms, there is a need for all sorts of industrial-age means and huge corporations for delivery. But suddenly, when the focus shifts to bits, the traditional big guys are no longer needed. Do-it-yourself publishing on the Internet makes sense. It does not for a paper copy." In this new economy, digital networking and communication infrastructures provide a global platform over which people and organizations devise strategies, interact, communicate, collaborate and search for information. More recently, Digital Economy has been defined as the branch of economics studying zero marginal cost intangible goods over the Net. The Digital Economy is worth three trillion dollars today. This is about 30% of the S&P 500, six times the U.S.’ annual trade deficit or more than the GDP of the United Kingdom. What is impressive is the fact that this entire value has been generated in the past 20 years since the launch of the Internet. It is widely accepted that the growth of the digital economy has widespread impact on the whole economy. Various attempts at categorizing the size of the impact on traditional sectors have been made. The Boston Consulting Group discussed “four waves of change sweeping over consumer goods and retail”, for instance. In 2012, Deloitte ranked six industry sectors as having a “short fuse” and to experience a "big bang” as a result of the digital economy. Telstra, a leading Australian telecommunications provider, describes how competition will become more global and more intense as a result of the digital economy. Given its expected broad impact, traditional firms are actively assessing how to respond to the changes brought about by the digital economy. For corporations, the timing of their response is of the essence. Banks are trying to innovate and use digital tools to improve their traditional business. Governments are investing in infrastructure. In 2013, the Australian National Broadband Network, for instance, aimed to provide a 1 GB/sec download speed fiber-based broadband to 93% of the population over ten years.

10 Little-Known Tricks for Perfect Sleep on a Flight

08:52
How to sleep easily on a plane? People who can easily fall asleep on a plane are among the lucky few because most of us aren’t able to doze off in a cramped space, sitting in such an uncomfortable position and surrounded by total strangers. What if we told you there are some simple tricks that can help you catch some Z’s on board? Who knew that flying on a Tuesday or keeping your seat belt fastened could actually make a difference? TIMESTAMPS Night is the best time for a flight 0:34 The best days to fly are Tuesdays and Wednesdays 1:27 The perfect seat is by the window 2:16 Tilt your seat back to the max 3:17 Clothes should be warm and comfortable 3:58 Fasten your seat belt over your clothes 4:43 Get yourself some sleeping accessories 5:25 Control the scents around you 6:05 Put your gadgets away 6:59 Food and drinks 7:34 SUMMARY - It’s great if you can pick a flight for the time you usually sleep at. Wake up 2-3 hours earlier on the day of your flight to help you fall asleep faster on board later on. - If you want fewer passengers and more space, pick the most unpopular days for booking flights: Tuesdays and Wednesdays, as a rule. You might even get up to 3 seats to yourself! - Always try to pick a window seat to rest your head on the wall and not be bothered by your neighbor wanting to get up to go to the bathroom. If you normally sleep on your left side, aim for seat A. If your right side is your preferred sleeping position, pick the window seat on the opposite side of the plane. - If you want good quality sleep in the cabin, adjust your seat as far back as it’ll go. Just make sure the person behind you doesn’t mind. - To have a sound nap onboard, you should wear loose clothes made of natural materials that don’t constrict your movements. If your airline doesn’t provide blankets, take a jacket and warm socks too. - A seat belt fastened over your clothes or blanket won’t make your sleep more comfortable, but it will prevent flight attendants from waking you up if the plane experiences turbulence. - Light and noise are the main culprits that keep you from getting needed shuteye. So this answer might be obvious: use a sleeping mask and earplugs! - You can control the scents in your immediate surrounding. Just sprinkle the head rest or your travel pillow with some lavender oil or any other essential oil you like. - Don’t watch movies on your phone, tablet, or laptop because the blue light of the screen wakes your brain up. Most sleep experts say you should put away all your electronics at least half an hour, or, better yet, an hour before you plan on dozing off. - If you want to be fast asleep, don’t overeat onboard. The food should be light and healthy, while the best drink option is tea (the herbal variety is perfect) or just plain water. Have your own tricks to share? The Third Industrial Revolution: A Radical New Sharing Economy

01:44:59
The global economy is in crisis. The exponential exhaustion of natural resources, declining productivity, slow growth, rising unemployment, and steep inequality, forces us to rethink our economic models. Where do we go from here? In this feature-length documentary, social and economic theorist Jeremy Rifkin lays out a road map to usher in a new economic system. A Third Industrial Revolution is unfolding with the convergence of three pivotal technologies: an ultra-fast 5G communication internet, a renewable energy internet, and a driverless mobility internet, all connected to the Internet of Things embedded across society and the environment. This 21st century smart digital infrastructure is giving rise to a radical new sharing economy that is transforming the way we manage, power and move economic life. But with climate change now ravaging the planet, it needs to happen fast. Change of this magnitude requires political will and a profound ideological shift. What is the Circular Economy?

01:01
The circular economy is a new paradigm of industrial organization that could eliminate 100 million tons of waste globally in the next five years alone. Learn more: http://cmr.berkeley.edu/browse/articles/60_3/ In a circular economy, materials are reused as much as possible. And new business models can promote resource efficiency by maximizing the value of what we already produce. There are five major characteristics of a circular economy: 1. Circular supply chain. All products should be designed to use fully recyclable or biodegradable materials. 2. Recovery and recycling. All waste byproducts should be optimized for revenue potential. 3. Build products to last. Discourage replacement of products by using durable materials, and offering to refurbish, refill, or repair. 4. Sharing platform. Let multiple customers use the same resources. Most cars sit idle for 92% of the time. Ride sharing is more efficient than individual ownership. 5. Product-as-a-Service model: Companies can be incentivized to consider longer product lifecycles by leasing products, instead of selling them. Michelin now sells tires as a service, where customers pay by miles driven. Based on the article "Introducing a Circular Economy: New Thinking with New Managerial and Policy Implications" by Mark Esposito, Terence Tse, and Khaled Soufani For more information, please read California Management Review's special issue on the Circular Economy (Volume 60, Issue 3) Volume 60, Issue 3 http://cmr.berkeley.edu/browse/articles/60_3/ Subscribe http://cmr.berkeley.edu/subscribe Follow us https://www.facebook.com/californiamanagementreview/
Can Our Economies Grow Forever? | Paul Ekins | TEDxUCL

16:56
As human economies grow, they use more and more natural resources and increase their impacts of the environment. The question arises as to whether continuing economic growth is a realistic objective on a finite planet. Theoretically it is possible for economic growth to continue indefinitely and in some places economic growth has been accompanied by reductions in environmental impacts. However, strong public policies are required to bring such developments about. At present most countries do not have the requisite policies in place, but with political will there is no reason why rising prosperity, resource conservation and environmental improvements should not be simultaneously achieved. Paul Ekins has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of London and is Professor of Resources and Environmental Policy and Director of the UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources at University College London. He is also a Co-Director of the UK Energy Research Centre. Paul Ekins’ academic work, published in numerous books, articles and scientific papers, focuses on the conditions and policies for achieving an environmentally sustainable economy. His book Economic Growth and Environmental Sustainability: the Prospects for Green Growth appeared in 2000. In the UK New Year’s Honours List for 2015 he received an OBE for services to environmental policy This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. The US Iran Oil Waiver and Trump's Economic Plan

Our Dan Raviv analyzes. Story: The White House announced on Monday that any country importing Iranian oil will no longer be exempt from sanctions if they do not end trade partnerships by May 2nd, in a renewed effort to heighten pressure on the Islamic Republic. "President Donald J. Trump has decided not to reissue Significant Reduction Exceptions (SREs) when they expire in early May," the administration said in a statement. "This decision is intended to bring Iran's oil exports to zero, denying the regime its principal source of revenue." Several countries including Japan, South Korea, Turkey, India and China, were previously exempt from sanctions on importing oil from Iran, but according to the report, the US will not renew sanctions waivers set to expire in the coming weeks. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a statement shortly after, welcoming Trump's decision as "important" vis-a-vis pressure on Iran. "We stand by the United States determination against Iranian aggression and this is the right way to stop it," Netanyahu said. Trump's decision on Monday was an expected move, although critics brought the wisdom of the decision into question amid humanitarian concerns following deadly floods in the Persian powerhouse. “We just want a continued chilling effect,” an unnamed official told reporters in April, according to news agency Reuters. “We want businesses to continue to think doing business with Iran is a terrible idea at this point.” In the short time since the report, Brent oil prices have jumped 2.8% percent, hitting their highest level since November. Last May, US President Donald Trump withdrew from the landmark 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and world powers, which curbed heavy sanctions on the country in exchange for halting its nuclear program. Tehran has continued to develop its ballistic missile technology but says it has no intention of acquiring atomic weapons and that its missile development programs are purely defensive. US officials have insisted that the sanctions are part of the US strategy to pressure Iran into changing its behavior, and even though its economy will likely suffer, they are not meant to target the common Iranian. Iranian officials have hit back, saying that the sanctions were in part to blame for the country not managing to scramble a proper emergency response to the floods, notably because of missing helicopter parts. Secretary of State Pompeo also reportedly told Iranian-Americans last week there were "no guarantees" the sanctions would not hurt the people of Iran, according to Axios. The renewal of American sanctions has sent shockwaves through Iran's economy over the past year, indirectly impacting medical and food supplies, and a steep decline in the value of the rial has pushed up prices of basic goods plunging the country into crisis. Unemployment and inflation have also gone through the roof. The US is attempting to build an alliance of like-minded countries that have now adopted the view pioneered by the Israeli establishment that Iran represents the "greatest threat to stability and security in the region." Although some European countries share concerns over Iran’s activities in the region, they have also voiced opposition against the sanctions policy, even trying to implement a financial mechanism to circumvent the sanctions. There is no certainty as to whether lifting the waiver will be successful. India and China could choose to disregard the US and refuse to be strong-armed in giving up on an important regional economic and diplomatic relation.

Or to vote for her in the town election? Or let her adopt your firstborn child? Alex Gendler explains how all of these things might not sound so strange if you were involved in a gift economy. Yet we’re also often keen to dismiss the ideas of its most famous and ambitious critic, Karl Marx. This isn’t very surprising. In practice, his political and economic ideas have been used to design disastrously planned economies and nasty dictatorships. Frankly, the remedies Marx proposed for the ills of the world now sound a bit demented. He thought we should abolish private property. People should not be allowed to own things. At certain moments one can sympathise. But it’s like wanting to ban gossip or forbid watching television. It’s going to war with human behaviour. And Marx believed the world would be put to rights by a dictatorship of the proletariat; which does not mean anything much today. Openly Marxist parties received a total of only 1,685 votes in the 2010 UK general election, out of the nearly 40 million ballots cast…” You can read more on this and many other topics on our blog TheBookofLife.org at this link: https://goo.gl/Rt3zri MORE SCHOOL OF LIFE Our website has classes, articles and products to help you think and grow: https://goo.gl/93tGtZ Watch more films on POLITICAL THEORY in our playlist: http://bit.ly/2dma0Sn Do you speak a different language to English? But many economists are skeptical of these claims, because the notion that the the economy offers a fixed amount of work has been debunked time and time again over the centuries and current economic data show no signs of a productivity boom. The Longest 20-Hour Flight in the World: Why So Special?

09:27
Picture this: you’re about to endure a 6-hour flight, and right now, before departure, you're sure that you're gonna be bored to tears. After all, it's 6 hours of sitting still in your seat with only short bathroom breaks! Sounds tough, but how about doing that for 18 hours instead?... Other videos you might like: 10 Little-Known Tricks for Perfect Sleep on a Flight https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1DMAOBco7Mc& 22 Things You Should Do at Least Once in Your Life https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbxncZGP9sw& A Secret New York Island That You Can Never Visit https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a2s8G0WH4iM& TIMESTAMPS: The longest commercial flight in the world 0:45 Why are there no economy passengers on these flights? 2:16 Flying for 20 hours straight ✈️ 3:32 Sleeping berths, an onboard gym, and a bar 🍸 4:10 Skyrider 2.0 (the latest airplane seat) 5:13 The top 10 longest flights you can book today 6:11 Music by Epidemic Sound https://www.epidemicsound.com/ SUMMARY: - However surprising it may be, people nowadays prefer to get from A to B without any unnecessary stops. - The first long-haul flight took place 18 years ago! On March 1, 2001, Continental Airlines had its first non-stop trip covering a distance of 7,332 miles. - Nowadays, the champion of long-haul travel is Singapore Airlines with their flight from Newark to Singapore. Just imagine: the longest commercial flight in the world lasts 18 hours and 45 minutes and covers a distance of 9,528 miles! - There are no economy passengers on these flights. Business passengers occupy 67 seats, and 94 cater those in premium economy. - Qantas Airways is planning to start non-stop flights between Sydney and London by 2022. This idea has been dubbed "Project Sunrise." - Qantas is planning to tempt travelers with a sleeping berth situated in the plane's cargo hold. Plus, there will be an onboard gym for some in-flight exercise. You’ll also have an opportunity to relax after your workout at an onboard bar! - A new solution suggested by Italian aviation designers might be the key to even cheaper airfare. At first sight, Skyrider 2.0, the latest airplane seat, looks pretty uncomfortable. - Some of the longest flights in the world may vary from season to season and often depend on weather, airport traffic, and climate conditions. But that doesn’t change the fact that passengers have to spend lots and lots of hours sitting on a plane. FULL: Pompeo Announces Retraction of Iran Oil Waivers

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced lifting such waivers on allies, promising an alternative from the Arab Gulf states and that Iran should be cautious in its aggressions.

2. 2. Economic History: The Problem | A Short History of Man: Progress and Decline

04:24
A Short History of Man: Progress and Decline represents nothing less than a sweeping revisionist history of mankind, in a concise and readable volume. Hans-Hermann Hoppe skillfully weaves history, sociology, ethics, and Misesian praxeology to present an alternative --and highly challenging — view of human economic development over the ages. As always, Hoppe addresses the fundamental questions as only he can. How do family and social bonds develop? Why is the concept of private property so vitally important to human flourishing? What made the leap from a Malthusian subsistence society to an industrial society possible? How did we devolve from aristocracy to monarchy to social democratic welfare states? And how did modern central governments become the all-powerful rulers over nearly every aspect of our lives? Hoppe examines and answers all of these often thorny questions without resorting to platitudes or bowdlerized history. This is Hoppe at his best: calmly and methodically skewering sacred cows. This is the complete audiobook version of A Short History of Man. The free PDF can be found at the Mises Institute website: https://mises.org/library/short-history-man-progress-and-decline Thanks for watching and remember to give a Thumbs Up and Subscribe!
That's Why Airplane Seats Are Almost Always Blue

11:04
Have you ever noticed how airplane seats are almost always blue, and have you ever wondered if there’s a special reason for that? We’re going to answer this and other popular plane-related questions and also help you pick the best seat aboard as a bonus. With the stress and apprehension that comes with traveling, especially by air, airlines understood that it’s important to calm passengers down and reassure them that everything’s gonna be alright. It turns out blue is the perfect color to send that message. As for materials, the seats can be upholstered with either faux leather or fabric. As a rule, in aircrafts used for long-distance flights, like transatlantic ones, the seats are upholstered with fabric because it’s more breathable for the skin, so passengers won’t sweat, chafe, or experience any discomfort. Tracks on the floor of the aircraft allow rows of seats to be organized at the airline’s discretion, so companies take advantage of this in order to install as many seats as they can physically cram into the space. That’s why plane windows don’t line up with the seats. Most planes are painted white to save money on fuel. The heavier the plane is (and it gets heavier when painted), the more fuel it needs. The color white also reflects light better, which means the plane won’t overheat because of the sun’s rays. Plus, white makes it easier to notice cracks, leaks, and any other damage that needs to be fixed. The temperature onboard is kept close to freezing for a reason. Many airplane passengers get hypoxia, which is when a person is more likely to faint at high altitudes than on the ground. It happens when bodily tissues don’t get enough oxygen. To minimize the risk of it, airlines keep the temperature low. Music: Rondo Brothers - Special Ed https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS Why are the seats blue? 0:50 Fabric or leather? 2:41 Why don’t plane windows line up with the seats? 3:53 Why are planes white? 4:53 Why is it so cold on planes? 6:07 Where do the pilots sleep? 7:27 Bonus: how to choose the best seat 8:40 SUMMARY -According to scientists, most people associate the color blue with reliability and safety, which is essential even for travelers who don’t suffer from aerophobia. Blue slows down your heart rate and relaxes tension. -As a rule, in aircrafts used for long-distance flights, the seats are upholstered with fabric because it’s more breathable for the skin. Artificial leather works great for short flights. It’s extremely wearproof, and even spilled drinks don’t stain it. -Plane windows don’t line up with the seats because airlines care about profits and try to install as many seats as they can physically cram into the space. -Planes are white out of economy: paint can make a plane anywhere from 600-1,200 lbs heavier, and the heavier the aircraft is, the more fuel it needs. -To minimize the risk of passengers fainting, airlines keep the temperature and air pressure in the cabin really low. -On flights that are longer than 10½ hours, pilots take turns resting in private bunks for the crew. In case there’s no special rest area onboard or if the flight isn’t that long, pilots take a break in the seat rows within or near the cockpit or even in the passenger cabin. -If you don’t want to listen to the hum of the engine throughout your whole flight, then choose a seat closer to the airplane’s nose. If you’re tall, be sure to sit next to the emergency exit. UBI - A Solution for Successful Society

02:31
Having a UBI (A.K.A 'Freedom Dividend') is a solution that can help our cities thrive in a rapidly advancing world. In the middle of all the political divisiveness of our time, UBI is an idea that is neither left nor right-winged… it’s forward. How will humanity deal with rapid technological changes and job loss? We believe that, together, we must rethink the nature of ‘work’ and 'jobs' as we know them. Before automation sweeps the globe - and while our ‘jobs’ are still around - we must work together on a sustainable path forward, with financial security for all. Share this with your friends, your family, and more high-profile humans who are willing to use their voice to educate the world on an issue that affects us all. PLEASE respect alternative perspectives, be kind, and speak constructively about potential SOLUTIONS. Remember, we all must share this small planet together.
