In places of extreme density like the dead core of a massive star, space and time could be dragged inwards to create a hole in the universe: a boundary in spacetime called an event horizon that could be entered, but from beyond which nothing could return. Once formed, there was nothing in theory or imagination that could bring material consumed back to the outside universe. These black holes should exist forever – only growing, never shrinking. What Does Nuclear Fallout Do To Your Body?

Nuclear explosions can spread harmful particulates for hundreds of miles. What is nuclear fallout and how can we protect ourselves from it? CDC and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) have studied whether it is possible to estimate the health effects to Americans from this global fallout. In the process, CDC and NCI were able to make some estimates of how much fallout exposure people received, what some of the possible effects might be, and how frequently the effects might occur." Effects Of A Nuclear Explosion http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/amex/bomb/sfeature/effects.html "Damage caused by nuclear explosions can vary greatly, depending on the weapon's yield (measured in kilotons or megatons), the type of nuclear fuel used, the design of the device, whether it's exploded in the air or at earth's surface, the geography surrounding the target, whether it's winter or summer, hazy or clear, night or day, windy or calm. Whatever the factors, though, the explosion will release several distinct forms of energy." St. Louis Baby Tooth Survey, 1959-1970 http://beckerexhibits.wustl.edu/dental/articles/babytooth.html "The Baby Tooth Survey was initiated in December 1958 as one of the activities of the Greater St. Louis Citizen's Committee for Nuclear Information (CNI). The Committee was organized in April 1958 by a group of scientists and public-minded citizens who felt that the community should be given accurate information on the known effects of nuclear energy and radiation." ____________________ DNews is dedicated to satisfying your curiosity and to bringing you mind-bending stories & perspectives you won't find anywhere else! 10 Ordinary Things You Don't Know Are Dangerous

10:48
What is radiation and where to find it? Radiation is all around, it lives right next to you, and it is contained in ordinary things you probably use or eat every single day. Or more like, where can it find you, because you are unlikely to go looking for it. Is it a scary something that produced three-headed dogs and human-sized mushrooms? Or is it magic that turned Bruce Banner into the Hulk? Or maybe it is a cancer treatment method that saved thousands of people? You probably have your idea of what radiation is, unless you are science friendly and know what it is. First of all, let us look at the nature of radiation. Like we said before, it comes in many forms and is all around us. Radiation can be human-made and natural. Sun, for instance, is a huge source of natural radiation, which affects us every day (and we seem to like it still, right?). Radiation not only comes at us from outer space but also from the soil and underground in the form of gases. What about human-made radiation then? It is produced by human inventions like televisions, cell phones, and various medical procedures. One thing you should remember is that it isn’t always dangerous. Factors like its strength, type and the length of exposure define that danger level. TIMESTAMPS The nature of radiation Bananas Beer Potatoes Cigarettes Exit Signs Kitty Litter Granite Kitchen Worktops Old Pottery and Glassware Glossy Magazine Paper Grand Central Station SUMMARY What is radiation? It is energy coming from some source and traveling through space in the form of waves or high-speed particles. Particulate radiation, as the name suggests, happens when particles, or atoms with unstable nuclei, to be more precise, give off the energy of mass they don’t need. They are just looking for stability. This type of radiation can also be produced by high-voltage devices, like x-ray machines. Electromagnetic radiation is of similar origin, but it travels in waves and weighs nothing. A good example of it is light and radio waves. - An average banana emits about 14 decays per second and has around 450 mg of potassium in it. Good news is, it is not dangerous for you if consumed in reasonable amounts. - Beer does contain around 390 pCi/kg of potassium-40, that isotope we’ve mentioned a few times already. - Just like beer, potatoes are radioactive. Just a bit. They have between 1 and 2.5 pCi/kg of radon-226 and 3,400 pCi/kg of potassium-40 in them. - When the smoker lits the cigarette and inhales, they come out into the air as a vapor. The concentration at release might be low, but these chemicals can accumulate in the smoker’s body. - Samples of a radioactive isotope of hydrogen called tritium are, in fact, stored inside the sign. So if something terrible happens and the sign will get smashed, the radioactive isotope can escape and get everyone contaminated. - Granite kitchen worktops look solid, rich and stylish. If you have one at home, you are probably pretty proud of it and like decorating it and casually bringing guests into your kitchen just to show it to them. It might look good, but it is radioactive dangerous, too. - Many pottery items, which were produced in the first half of the 20th century contain rather a high amount of uranium. It is especially true about those orange and red items. The first Fukushima radiation death now reported

04:17
The Fukushima disaster exposed some nuclear power plant workers to levels of radiation that might induce some radiation related deaths eventually. In September 2018 one death has now been reported by the Japan Health, labor and Welfare Ministry, or has it? After thousands of views and hundreds of comments on this video, not a single person has presented information of my challenge. It appears the reporting of the "first death" was indeed fake news. Follow up video I did three weeks later: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RWhGhb5tzW8 The Japan Health, Labor & Health Ministry official website: https://www.mhlw.go.jp/english/ Kōrō-shō https://www.mhlw.go.jp/index.html Press releases for September 2018: https://www.mhlw.go.jp/stf/houdou/houdou_list_201809.html This appears to be the earliest version of this story, https://connectshape.com/japan-acknowledges-first-radiation-linked-death-out-of-fukushima/ but it appears they made it up. There is no evidence that the Japan Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare ministry ever made such a statement. Additionally, the links they provide "according to Reuters" and "the BBC reported" all point to stories with dates AFTER this story was created on September 4th 2018, so they obviously edited the story later. Fake news. I have written to them with my accusation, will post results here if I ever get a response. This represented the first time in history that a nuclear plant had blown up so spectacularly and left the area around it devastated for decades and generations to come. While we know the causes of the April 1986 accident, we are still assessing and witnessing the results of this environmental catastrophe. Many people have passed away, other deal with various disabilities resulting from the radiation. The environment has been forever scarred. Even the nearby town of Pripyat has been forever changed. The disaster at Chernobyl has led to a range of strange and horrible side-effects that we are still dealing with today. Some you likely know about, but others have popped up that have researchers scratching their heads. What with the mass death and destruction, it would be better if we all just decided to get along rather than resorting to launching nukes at each other. But if it were to happen, and the earth became irradiated and frozen in a nuclear winter, what would happen to life? Would everything die, or would cockroaches rise up and populate the world as the internet would have us believe? Happily, there are quite a few forms of life that would survive. New Mind-blowing Discoveries on Saturn System

05:52
New research emerging from the final orbits of NASA's Cassini spacecraft represents a huge leap forward in our understanding of the Saturn system -- especially the mysterious, never-before-explored region between the planet and its rings. Some preconceived ideas are turning out to be wrong while new questions are being raised. Six teams of researchers are publishing their work Oct. 5 in the journal Science, based on findings from Cassini's Grand Finale. That's when, as the spacecraft was running out of fuel, the mission team steered Cassini spectacularly close to Saturn in 22 orbits before deliberately vaporizing it in a final plunge into the atmosphere in September 2017. Knowing Cassini's days were numbered, its mission team went for gold. The spacecraft flew where it was never designed to fly. For the first time, it probed Saturn's magnetized environment, flew through icy, rocky ring particles and sniffed the atmosphere in the 1,200-mile-wide (2,000-kilometer-wide) gap between the rings and the cloud tops. Not only did the flight path push the spacecraft to its limits, the new findings illustrate how powerful and agile the instruments were. The papers published in Science are: 1) "Chemical interactions between Saturn's atmosphere and its rings," by J.Hunter Waite, et.al. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/362/6410/eaat2382 2) "D-Ring dust falling into Saturn's equatorial ionosphere and upper atmosphere," by Donald Mitchell, et.al. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/362/6410/eaat2236 3) "In-situ collection of dust grains falling from Saturn's rings into its atmosphere," by Hsiang-Wen Hsu, et.al. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/362/6410/eaat3185 4) "A radiation belt of energetic protons located between Saturn and its rings," by Elias Roussos, Peter Kollmann, et.al. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/362/6410/eaat1962 5) "Saturn's magnetic field revealed by the Cassini Grand Finale," by Michele Dougherty, et.al. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/362/6410/eaat5434 6) "The low frequency source of Saturn's Kilometric Radiation (SKR)," by Laurent Lamy, et.al. http://science.sciencemag.org/content/362/6410/eaat2027 On Oct. 4, as the Science publication embargo lifts, articles describing research complementary to these findings will post online in Geophysical Research Letters (GRL), a journal of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). https://agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/toc/10.1002/(ISSN)1944-8007.CASSINI_FINALE1 Read more here: https://www.iflscience.com/space/saturns-ring-rain-is-actually-more-of-a-downpour-say-scientists/ https://www.space.com/42022-cassini-saturn-finale-ring-rain-surprises.html https://www.nasa.gov/feature/jpl/groundbreaking-science-emerges-from-ultra-close-orbits-of-saturn Clips, images credit: NASA/JPL-Caltech Music credit: YouTube Audio Library Stranger Danger - Francis Preve Ladybug - Quincas Moreira

ALERT: Cosmic Rays are Getting Worse - Deep Space Radiation Intensifying Faster than Predicted

07:04
Have you ever been hit by a beam of high energy particles from above? Surely you have since it happens all the time lately. And the cosmic ray situation is WORSENING. Cosmic rays hitting Earth are bad and are getting worse. That’s the conclusion of a new paper published in the research journal Space Weather, showing that radiation from deep space is dangerous and intensifying faster than previously predicted. SPACE WEATHER BALLOON DATA: Approximately once a week, Spaceweather.com and the students of Earth to Sky Calculus fly space weather balloons to the stratosphere over California. These balloons are equipped with radiation sensors that detect cosmic rays, a surprisingly "down to Earth" form of space weather. Cosmic rays can seed clouds, trigger lightning, and penetrate commercial airplanes. Furthermore, there are studies ( #1, #2, #3, #4) linking cosmic rays with cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death in the general population. Our latest measurements show that cosmic rays are intensifying, with an increase of more than 18% since 2015. Let's face it: Humans are pretty messy. Industrial processes like mining and manufacturing are important parts of keeping civilization going, but they all impact the environment. Sometimes that impact is particularly big and messy, leaving behind hazardous waste that can take years or even decades to clean up. How Entropy Powers The Earth (Big Picture Ep. 4/5)

03:15
This video is about how we don't just need energy to power our lives, we need *low entropy* energy! Thanks to Google Making and Science for supporting this series, and to Sean Carroll for collaborating on it! His book can be found here: http://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/316646/the-big-picture-by-sean-carroll/ Playlist of the full video series: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLoaVOjvkzQtyZF-2VpJrxPz7bxK_p1Dd2 Link to Patreon supporters here: http://www.minutephysics.com/supporters.html This video is about how we don't just need energy to power our lives, we need *low entropy* energy! This is also known as "free energy", and one way of thinking about entropy is as the lack of free energy. The sun provides us with useful, low entropy, energy in the form of photons of visible light, which are then absorbed and converted into plants, sugar, complex molecules, etc, before being radiated back into space as heat, which has much higher entropy. Music for the series was especially composed by Nathaniel Schroeder, http://www.soundcloud.com/drschroeder REFERENCES & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION Entropy Balance of Radiation of the Earth system http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/0038092X9290097T Heat balance of global warming/climate change: http://www.skepticalscience.com/4-Hiroshima-bombs-worth-of-heat-per-second.html More on the Entropy Balance of the Earth System https://www.bnl.gov/envsci/pubs/pdf/2010/BNL-81482-2008-JA.pdf The Entropy of a Photon Gas: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Photon_gas Sean's blog: http://www.preposterousuniverse.com/blog/2016/05/11/big-picture-part-four-complexity/ Another article by Sean about complexity and god: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/writings/dtung/ Sean Carroll: The Big Picture (more great articles about entropy, etc on his blog http://preposterousuniverse.com) Interactive Entropy explainer by Aatish Bhatia: http://aatishb.github.io/entropy/ MinutePhysics is on Google+ - http://bit.ly/qzEwc6 And facebook - http://facebook.com/minutephysics And twitter - @minutephysics Minute Physics provides an energetic and entertaining view of old and new problems in physics -- all in a minute! In the 1940s Quaker Oats and MIT joined forces to study the absorption of vitamins and minerals. They recruited disadvantaged kids at the Fernald State School to join the “Science Club” and fed them radioactive iron and calcium without their knowledge. You can go to https://Audible.com/Eons or text “Eons” to 500-500 to get started today with your 30-day trial membership with a free audiobook The first era of our current eon, the Paleozoic Era, is probably the most deceptively fascinating time in Earth’s history. With near constant revolutions in life, punctuated by catastrophic extinctions, it is also one of the most chaotic. Correction! At 9:19, we erroneously refer to Dimetrodon as an herbivore. It was definitely a carnivore. We even made a whole video about Dimetrodon and their carnivorous ways in a previous episode: https://youtu.be/SR3OOP9mImI Thanks to everyone who pointed out our error! How to Survive Radiation Exposure: Series 1, Part 3 — Ginkgo Biloba

01:46
Third part of a series of brief videos about which chemical compounds one might take to attenuate the effects of radiation exposure. In this video we look at Ginkgo Biloba extract, a herbal product derived from the leaves of a tree of the same name. This tree has been described as a 'living fossil' as it is the only remaining example of its particular genus. Strangely, Ginkgo trees survived the Hiroshima atomic bombs [source: Wikipedia]. Obviously, none of the chemicals mentioned in this series will protect anybody from the explosive effects of a direct blast, but rather merely mollify the affects of radiological contamination of air, food and water. Dark radiation | Wikipedia audio article

01:39
This is an audio version of the Wikipedia Article: Dark radiation 00:01:07 undefined Listening is a more natural way of learning, when compared to reading. Written language only began at around 3200 BC, but spoken language has existed long ago. Learning by listening is a great way to: - increases imagination and understanding - improves your listening skills - improves your own spoken accent - learn while on the move - reduce eye strain Now learn the vast amount of general knowledge available on Wikipedia through audio (audio article). You could even learn subconsciously by playing the audio while you are sleeping! If you are planning to listen a lot, you could try using a bone conduction headphone, or a standard speaker instead of an earphone. You can find other Wikipedia audio articles too at: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCuKfABj2eGyjH3ntPxp4YeQ You can upload your own Wikipedia articles through: https://github.com/nodef/wikipedia-tts "The only true wisdom is in knowing you know nothing." - Socrates SUMMARY ======= Dark radiation (also dark electromagnetism) is a postulated type of radiation that mediates interactions of dark matter. By analogy to the way photons mediate electromagnetic interactions between particles in the Standard Model (called baryonic matter in cosmology), dark radiation is proposed to mediate interactions between dark matter particles. Similar to dark matter particles, the hypothetical dark radiation does not interact with Standard Model particles. There has been no notable evidence for the existence of such radiation, but since baryonic matter contains multiple interacting particle types, it is reasonable to suppose that dark matter does also. Moreover, it has been pointed out recently that the cosmic microwave background data seems to suggest that the number of effective neutrino degrees of freedom is more than 3.046, which is slightly more than the standard case for 3 types of neutrino. This extra degree of freedom could arise from having a non-trivial amount of dark radiation in the universe. One possible candidate for dark radiation is the sterile neutrino.

15 Accidental Inventions You Can't Imagine Your Life Without

11:40
Some of the greatest inventions we use every day were created by accident. From the microwave to ice-cream cones, the accidental inventions on this list completely changed our way of life. Sometimes things don’t go according to plan. But every now and then, it’s for the better! American chemist Roy J. Plunkett was doing research for the company Dupont to make fridges safer and invented a strange substance that was non-reactive, non-stick, and resistant to extreme temperatures. We all know it as Teflon. John Pemberton was a pharmacist trying to find a way to get rid of headaches. He came up with a simple recipe consisting of two ingredients: coca leaves and cola nuts combined into a syrup. It was later mixed with soda by accident and became a huge hit. Dr. Spencer Silver, a chemist for 3M Company, was trying to create a super strong adhesive but what he got instead was a “low-tack” yet high-quality adhesive only strong enough to hold up a piece of paper but durable enough to be relocated multiple times without losing its stick. We all know and love it as Post-it notes today. The first antidepressant was discovered in 1957 and was supposed to be a cure for tuberculosis. Wilhelm Roentgen unintentionally put his hand in front of an electron-beam tube back in 1895 and noticed that the radiation passed through solid objects and body parts leaving a shadow. And now we have x-ray imaging! TIMESTAMPS Matches 0:41 Teflon 1:33 Potato chips 2:25 Ice-cream cones 3:16 Coca Cola 4:03 Post-It notes 4:37 Safety glass 5:26 Vulcanized rubber 5:57 Plastic 6:50 Antidepressants 7:34 Implantable pacemaker 8:00 Antibiotics 8:28 X-rays 9:09 Superglue 9:42 Microwave oven 10:20 SUMMARY -British pharmacist John Walker noticed that one of the sticks he used to mix the chemicals had some substance on it that caught fire easily. -American chemist Roy J. Plunkett was trying to make fridges safer and accidentally created non-reactive, non-stick substance resistant to extreme temperatures. -New York chef George Crum decided to change the way he cooked potatoes to avoid customer complaints. -The ice cream booth at the 1904 World’s Fair in St. Louis was running out of bowls and tried using waffles instead of them. -Pharmacist John Pemberton was trying to find a way to get rid of headaches and invented the syrup of coca leaves and cola nuts. -3M Company chemist failed to create a super strong adhesive but gave the world the famous sticky papers. -French chemist Édouard Bénédictus noticed that the beaker that didn’t shatter after falling off his desk had had a thin film of liquid plastic in it. -Charles Goodyear mixed rubber with sulfur and accidentally dropped it on a hot surface – that’s how vulcanized rubber was invented. -Plastic was accidentally created in search for a cheaper alternative for shellac but became something way more useful. -The first antidepressant was discovered in 1957 and was supposed to be a cure for tuberculosis. -Wilson Greatbatch added the wrong electronic component to what was supposed to be heartbeat recording gadget and created the pacemaker. -Scottish scientist Alexander Flemming noticed that mold killed the bacteria in a dish in his messy laboratory and saved a great number of lives with his invention of penicillin. -Wilhelm Roentgen unintentionally put his hand in front of an electron-beam tube back in 1895 … and invented x-ray imaging. -In 1942, Kodak researcher Harry Coover was working on transparent plastic for gun sights when he accidentally created an extremely adhesive substance that stuck to just about anything. -Navy radar specialist Percy Spencer noticed that the bar of chocolate in his pocket melted near a microwave-emitting magnetron. And this is how the microwave oven was invented in 1945! How Your Smartphone Affects Your Brain And Body

07:50
63% of people aged between 18 and 29 and 30% of people from 30 to 64 fall asleep holding their smartphones. Did you know that smartphones can harm your brain, disrupt your body's biorhythms, and damage your health? Shockingly, but a double espresso influences our body less than the light of our phone! TIMESTAMPS Confusion of biorhythms 0:40 Accumulation of toxins 1:40 It gets harder to study 2:36 Memory disruptions 3:25 You are always hungry 3:54 You might get vision disorder 4:51 Your mood changes 5:43 Stop work with gadgets at least 2 hours before sleep 6:14 Use special applications 6:44 #smartphone #phoneaffects SUMMARY - Can you imagine that the light from the gadget has the same effect as the morning sun? It makes your brain stop producing melatonin (it’s the hormone which is necessary for your sound sleep). Also, melatonin also makes the development of cancer and other diseases slow down or prevents it completely. - Melatonin and other hormones aren’t produced - sleep cycles are disturbed - our sleep becomes broken and restless. It leads to toxins accumulation. And this process, in turn, results in headaches, tiredness, exhaustion of the nervous system and stress. Scientists strongly recommend to have 7-9 hours of sleep; otherwise, your brain neurons won’t have time to rest, and your body won’t have time to get purified from neurotoxins. - We are the captives of our smartphones; therefore, we sleep less, spending more and more time with our electronic friends. The research shows that students who overuse their phones need 25 minutes to concentrate on the task at hand! - It gets harder and harder to remember old, already existing information. It resembles a messy wardrobe: when it is untidy and crammed to overflowing, it becomes increasingly difficult to find needed things. You have to apply more effort and time to have a result. - A special testing was conducted: it examined 49 students who had to run on a treadmill. In the process of the experiment, it became obvious that those who spent up to 14 hours a day using their phones were much less fit than those whose smartphone time was just about 1 and a half hour. - When 2,000 people were interviewed about the reasons for their vision problems, 55% admitted that their eye discomfort most probably stemmed from the habit to spend too much time (including in the dark) on their smartphones. - A study which was held in Northwest University says that the more time people spend on their phones, especially in the nighttime, the higher is the risk of them getting depressed. - Read a paper book instead of surfing the Internet or watching movies online. Actually, you can even use an e-book. - If you have some urgent work to do or an important message to receive and it’s not possible to switch off your mobile phone, modern technologies come to rescue! There are special filters you can add to your screen.
