Sandvik Mining ice cutting
Between Jan 25 and Feb 05, 2010, Sandvik's rock cutting competence center at Zeltweg, Austria presented what is probably the worlds largest and most powerful mobile underground mining machine to potential customers from Canada, USA, Poland, Russia, Germany and the UK. The Borer Miner MF420 weighs in at 250 tonnes. The total installed power is 1550 KW (2000 HP) This machine is the first of a total of seven units to be supplied to the Canadian potash producer PotashCorp between April2010 and April 2011. During the prototype tests, the machine had cut a 10m long tunnel through a specially erected concrete block of 10 x 10 x 10 metres size. After the cutting test, the machine was facing a new challenge: For the first time ever, cutting was to be filmed from the rocks perspective. To make this possible, a large ice block was built on the entrance of the test tunnel. the austrian-based company ICEANDART was contracted to design and build this ice wall.

Sandvik Mining hosted a Customer Day at its plant in Tampere, Finland in September, where the company unveiled its new-look Pantera surface drill line and also launched Sandvik DD422i, the first of the company's Next Generation underground drill rigs. More than 300 event participants representing 10 countries also toured the factory and observed demonstrations that included Sandvik AutoMine product family and the maneuvering abilities of Sandvik DD211, the new single-boom rig for narrow vein applications. Produced by the Marion Power Shovel Company, this fascinating movie looks at copper and copper mining in the 1960s, when the American mines were at peak production and financial troubles loomed. The film looks at the future of mining, including the development of efficiencies to keep mines in business. Open pit mining techniques are shown, with a focus on the Southwest. At 2:00, Bingham Canyon and the Utah Mining Company pit (also known as the Kennecott Copper Mine) is seen. At 2:40, various open pit mines are seen which use either trucks or trains to remove ore. Although they are not named, it's likely that one of them is the Phelps-Dodge mine at Bisbee, Arizona. At 5:40, exploratory core drilling is shown. At 6:30, exploration programs are shown including at 6:43, an engineering team that maps mine development. Various drill systems are seen at 9:00, including the rotary drill. At 10:30, preparations are seen towards using explosives with the burying of dynamite and detonators for excavation. At 12:12, loading of explosives is seen with an emphasis on safe handling. At 14:51, a cage drill is shown in use allowing rocks to be drilled in the field (without being moved by shovels) for explosive removal. The most common carcass materials are polyester, nylon and cotton. The cover is often various rubber or plastic compounds specified by use of the belt. Covers can be made from more exotic materials for unusual applications such as silicone for heat or gum rubber when traction is essential. Material flowing over the belt may be weighed in transit using a beltweigher. Belts with regularly spaced partitions, known as elevator belts, are used for transporting loose materials up steep inclines. Belt Conveyors are used in self-unloading bulk freighters and in live bottom trucks. Belt conveyor technology is also used in conveyor transport such as moving sidewalks or escalators, as well as on many manufacturing assembly lines. Stores often have conveyor belts at the check-out counter to move shopping items. Ski areas also use conveyor belts to transport skiers up the hill. Some of the major global conveyor belt service providers are Terra Nova Technologies, ThyssenKrupp, HESE Maschinenfabrik GmbH and Tenova Takraf... It takes more than two days to produce an insert, so it’s a complicated process. In the material warehouse, row after row of raw material are stacked. The tungsten carbide we use is either recycled, or comes from our own mine in Austria. Cobalt, titanium and all other ingredients come from carefully selected suppliers; each batch meticulously tested in the lab. Some recipes contain very small amounts of selected ingredients that are added by hand. The main ingredients are then automatically dispensed at the different stops along the weigh line. In the milling room the ingredients are milled to the required particle size together with ethanol, water and an organic binder. This process takes from eight to 55 hours, depending on the recipe. The slurry is pumped into a spray drier where hot nitrogen gas is sprayed to evaporate the ethanol and water mixture. When the powder is dry, it consists of spherical granules of identical sizes. A sample is sent to the lab for quality check. Barrels of 100 kilograms of ready-to-press powder arrive at the pressing machine. The binder added in the milling room is the binder that holds the powder together after pressing. Up to 12 tons of pressure are applied, depending on the type of insert. Each insert is weighed and at certain intervals controlled visually by the operator. The pressed inserts are very fragile and need to be hardened in a sintering oven. This process takes about 13 hours at a temperature of approximately 1,500 degrees Celsius. The inserts are sintered into an extremely hard cemented-carbide product, almost as hard as diamond. The organic binder is incinerated and the insert shrinks approximately to half its original size. The excess heat is recycled and used to heat the premises in the winter, and cool them down during summer. The inserts are ground, one by one, in different types of grinding machines to achieve the exact size, geometry and tolerances. As the cemented carbide insert is so hard, a disc with 150 million small industrial diamonds, is used to grind it. The excess carbide is recycled, as well as the oil that is used as cutting fluid. The majority of inserts are coated, either through chemical vapour deposition (CVD) or physical vapour deposition (PVD). Here, we see a PVD-process. The inserts are placed in fixtures... …and put into the oven. The thin layer of coating makes the insert both harder and tougher. This is also where the insert gets its specific colour. Although the insert has been inspected at the lab regularly during the whole process, it’s manually examined again before it’s laser marked and packed. After labelling, the grey boxes are ready to be sent out to manufacturers around the world. When the inserts are worn out, they are returned to Sandvik Coromant for recycling, and the process of making a new insert begins.
