Geordie Rose is the Founder of D-Wave Systems. He is known as a leading advocate for quantum computing and physics-based processor design and has been invited to speak on these topics in venues ranging from the 2003 TED Conference to IdeaCity 2013. His innovative and ambitious approach to building quantum computing technology has received coverage in MIT Technology Review, The Economist, New Scientist, Scientific American, Nature, and Science, and one of his business strategies was profiled in a Harvard Business School case study. He has received several awards and accolades for his work with D-Wave, including winning the 2011 Canadian Innovation Exchange Innovator of the Year award. Dr. Rose holds a PhD in theoretical physics from the University of British Columbia, specializing in quantum effects in materials. While at McMaster University, he graduated first in his class with a BEng in Engineering Physics, specializing in semiconductor engineering. He is a two-time Canadian national wrestling champion and a member of the McMaster Sports Hall of Fame. The Creative Destruction Lab (CDL) is a seed-stage program for massively scalable, science-based companies. The nine-month program employs an objectives-based mentoring process with the goal of maximizing equity-value creation. The CDL is particularly suited to early stage companies with links to university research labs. First developed by the British New Labour government in the late 1990s, it has influenced a global way of thinking about the relations between culture and the economy. The lecture will address its rise and diffusion and the role of political entrepreneurship in the continuous reworking and dissemination of an orthodox mode of thought, illustrated by examples from the UK, EU and UN. What are the appeals of the creative economy? Why have counter-arguments been so ineffective? What are the consequences for how we understand cultural work? The lecture is informed by Philip Schlesinger's first-hand research into how cultural bodies work, published in two new co-authored books. Drawing on interviews with key players, The Rise and Fall of the UK Film Council analyses the shifting politics of support for the British film industry in a transnational market dominated by the US. Curators of Cultural Enterprise is an ethnographic analysis of a key cultural business support agency, that portrays how UK creative economy policy operates in devolved Scotland. Both studies raise questions about the rationality of public policy. Angela McRobbie’s response will draw upon work related to her book Be Creative: Making a Living in the New Culture Industries which charts the ‘euphoric’ moment of the new creative economy, as it rose to prominence in the UK during the Blair years, and considers it from the perspective of contemporary experience of economic austerity and uncertainty about work and employment. Philip Schlesinger (@PRSchlesinger1) is Professor in Cultural Policy in the Centre for Cultural Policy Research/CREATe at the University of Glasgow and Visiting Professor in the Department of Media and Communications at LSE. Angela McRobbie (@angelamcrobbie) is Professor of Communications at Goldsmiths, University of London. Jonothan Neelands is Professor of Creative Education at Warwick Business School and Research Project Director of the Creative Industries Federation. Robin Mansell (@REMVAN) is Deputy Director and Provost and Professor of New Media and the Internet. The Department of Media and Communications (@MediaLSE) undertakes outstanding and innovative research and provides excellent research-based graduate programmes for the study of media and communications. The Department was established in 2003 and in 2014 our research was ranked number 1 in the most recent UK research evaluation, with 91% of research outputs ranked world-leading or internationally excellent.

Proper pruning improves the health of your rose bush, prevents disease, and encourages better flowering. There are different pruning strategies for different times of the year, but overall the goal is always the same: to keep the bush vigorous and open, allowing better air circulation through the center of the plant. Air movement dries the leaves, which helps prevent foliar diseases. Fungal diseases like black spot and powdery mildew are more common on plants with congested growth in the middle of the plant. Pruning cuts should always be made just above a bud eye. "Bud eye" refers to the area on the stem where branching occurs. In the summer, it's easy to figure out where to prune, just cut right above a set of mature leaves. Taryn Rose created one of today's most successful and highly coveted brands in footwear. An orthopedic surgeon turned shoe designer, Dr. Rose married fashion and function in 1999, changing the footwear industry forever. Did You Know? originally started out as a PowerPoint presentation for a faculty meeting in August 2006 at Arapahoe High School in Centennial, Colorado, United States. The presentation "went viral" on the Web in February 2007 and, as of June 2007, had been seen by at least 5 million online viewers. Today the old and new versions of the online presentation have been seen by at least 20 million people, not including the countless others who have seen it at conferences, workshops, training institutes, and other venues. The web site http://shifthappens.wikispaces.com/ tells more about how this simple little presentation spread worldwide (which certainly was not the original intent) and provides complete credits for this and its predecessor versions. As you will see, there was lots of feedback, both positive and negative, about the presentation. When XPLANE offered to help with the redesign, they gratefully accepted its offer to make a "new and improved" version in order to try and help continue the conversation (and to ask more from viewers). This version, updated to early 2012, was created by David S. Rose (@davidsrose) for use in the Finance, Entrepreneurship and Economics program at Singularity University (singularityu.org).
