A complete guide to getting admission in Politecnico di Milano The Politecnico di Milano (English: Polytechnic University of Milan) is the largest technical university in Italy, with about 42,000 students. The Politecnico has two main campuses in Milan city, where the majority of the research and teaching activity are located, and other satellite campuses in five other cities across Lombardy and Emilia Romagna. The central offices and headquarters are located in the historical campus of Città Studi in Milan, which is also the largest, active since 1927. The university was ranked the best for Engineering and among the top big universities in Italy in the CENSIS-Repubblica Italian University rankings for 2014-2015.According to the QS World University Rankings, it is the 24th best technical university in the world, ranking 7th for Design, 24th for Engineering and Technology, 14th for Civil and Structural Engineering and 14th for Architecture. The admission in the undergraduate programme in Engineering in the Politecnico is bound to an admission test, aimed to verify the starting preparation of every student. The main goal of this test is to point out the lacks of the aspiring students and, in case, to assign them an extra course. Only some programmes have a strictly limited number of places, even if the Academic Senate fixes an approximate maximum number of students for every programme. The admission test for any Engineering school, except Construction Engineering, is divided in four parts, each about one of the following general subject: English Language; Logic, Mathematics and Statistics; Verbal Comprehension; Physics. Admission to the graduate programmes in the Politecnico requires an undergraduate degree and a set of requirements specific for each school, such as the time spent in obtaining the undergraduate degree or the grade point average scored during the undergraduate programme. The Politecnico also offers courses of study for the title of Dottore di Ricerca (Ph.D.), MBA courses, and other postgraduate courses. MIP Business School is one of the most prominent management school in Italy and was ranked as 96th best business school in the world by Financial Times in 2011. Trace Pavilion is the third in a series of bamboo pavilions designed and built by University of Saint Joseph 3rd year architecture students. Like the previous two pavilions (Pulse and Bloom), Trace was developed over a semester through a series of exercises, precedent studies, and a design competition of which the winning design was built. Combining contemporary digital design techniques with traditional bamboo construction, this pavilion studio attempts to broaden the spectrum of bamboo use in contemporary Asia beyond that of just scaffolding. Through a collaboration with Tobias Klein and Tomas Laurenzo from the School of Creative Media at CityU in Hong Kong, Pulse was animated every night with a coordinated audio and 360 degree projection mapped light show. A warm welcome. Whether you are a prospective student, a student already enrolled, an alumnus, a corporate executive or a scholar you will find that, at the School, we all share the same values of integrity, professionalism, respect for diversity and a passion for innovation. Whatever your interests are -- education, recruitment, consultancy or any other topic -- you will experience the same values that drive us constantly in our mission of educating future responsible business leaders. We bring together people and ideas from around the world to cross-fertilise cultures and know-how, with the ultimate goal of contributing to a better and more sustainable management of both private and public sectors. I would like to bring your attention to just three key features of MIP. First of all, the School is part of the Politecnico di Milano, with its long tradition of intellectually free research, scientific rigour and interdisciplinarity. This allows us to design and deliver cutting-edge educational programs, combining our managerial knowledge with the technical expertise of the other sixteen schools belonging to our University -- such as Design, Energy, ICT, Mathematics, etc. Secondly, the governance of MIP, which is a consortium between the University and a prestigious group of external players, mostly top multinational corporations. This gives the School the invaluable opportunity to interact on a daily basis with the real-world experience of a corporate environment. Finally, by coming to Milan, you will experience being in one of Europe's most influential and dynamic cultural cities, at the forefront of modern Italy. The moment you get in touch with our School, I believe that you will share our values. We will offer you the opportunity of enhancing your personal development and becoming part of a large and diversified community. Whenever I talk to students and graduates, I feel that being the dean of MIP Politecnico di Milano is a unique privilege. This is because I feel the unequalled satisfaction of contributing -- together with faculty and staff -- in shaping the talented high-flyers of tomorrow's business world, working for a better society. UNSW School of Photovoltaic and Renewable Energy Engineering Public Lecture Sunlight-driven water splitting in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells Beniamino Iandolo Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg (Sweden) To view complete with sildes: http://www2.pv.unsw.edu.au/videos/Beniamino-Iandolo-11Apr2013/ Homepage: http://www.pv.unsw.edu.au Abstract Sunlight-driven water splitting in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells Beniamino Iandolo Sunlight-driven water splitting in photoelectrochemical (PEC) cells is an attractive method for direct solar-to-fuel energy conversion. Hematite (Fe2O3), also known as rust, is a promising light absorber for PEC cells despite its non-optimal optoelectronic properties. An interesting strategy to improve its energy conversion efficiency is functionalization with metallic nanoparticles supporting localized surface plasmon resonances. In this talk, the beneficial effect of metallic nanodisks on the performance of photoanodes based on ultra-thin hematite films are presented and discussed. Experiments and calculations are combined to investigate -- and partly elucidate - the mechanisms behind the observed improvement [1,2]. Moreover, measurements of the faradaic efficiency of water splitting on the surface of hematite are presented . Brief Bio Beniamino Iandolo obtained a Bachelor degree in Engineering Physics from Politecnico di Milano (Italy) in 2007 and a Master degree in the same subject, from Politecnico di Milano, in 2009. Beniamino performed the wok for MSc thesis at Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg (Sweden), during a one year exchange project between 2008 and 2009. In 2010 I returned to Chalmers to join the Applied Physics department as PhD student. He is currently involved in a research project in the area of sustainable hydrogen production from water and sunlight. His research focus is on understanding and improving the photoelectrochemical (PEC) properties of hematite (a-Fe2O3), a promising light absorber for PEC cells. References B. Iandolo and M.
