In this number talk we are working on evaluating student work and analyzing student thinking with multiplication word problems to develop the students' critical thinking skills. In the beginning of the number talk I show the class sample student work. Their goal is to analyze the student work and evaluate if they agree or disagree with the student's thinking and explain why. I use number talks about 3 times a week at the beginning of my math lesson to have the students problem-solve, practice using mathematical language, share their thinking, and view multiple strategies. I create the number talks based on common misconceptions I see during whole class lessons. When watching the video, the students are working from 4:52-10:25 (you can skip through this part if you would like).

This is a video of my class and I doing a multiplication number talk. A number talk is where the teacher poses a math problem and the students solve mentally using a talked about strategy. After solutions are found they share their strategies with a carpet buddy engaging in conversation to help understand the strategy. After the share piece the students write their response in their journal. First, writing out the math they did in their head and then answering the question; "How did you solve the problem?" My school partakes in TAP and our focus the past couple cycles has been purposeful talk (which is in the video) and writing. The writing portion is done in three chunks; restating the question in the answer, topic sentence, and details. The students have already mastered restating and we are now in the topic sentence portion.

Read the whole post and grab the resources: http://mathisvisual.com/halving-doubling/ Number Talks have become commonplace in many elementary math classrooms across North America to help students build their number sense and overall number fluency. This is amazing news! However, the reality is that while using number talks in the classroom can be helpful, I have witnessed on a number of occasions where students learn to apply strategies without fully understanding why they work.  In this particular series of visual prompts, I'm attempting to build in a Jo Boaler-style visual number talk for multiplication to unpack, through investigation, the halving and doubling strategy. This is a great way to lower the floor on this task and ensure that all students in your classroom have an entry point.  Keep an eye out for number properties as we will be unpacking those near the end. The silent solution video is much longer than usual because I attempt to fully unpack how the halving and doubling strategy works using number properties.  Let's dive in!
