Exploring The Abandoned Calhoun Mine - Part 1 of 2

22:17
I was completely overwhelmed by this mine. I mean, there is absolutely no way to tell from the outside just how significant of an operation this was. There was no visible mining infrastructure outside except for a few boards and the remains of a car from the 1930s. And, perhaps the most reliable indicator, which is a large waste rock pile, was completely misleading as the waste rock pile only consisted of that small landing where I filmed the portal from. I don’t know what they did with all of the waste rock… So, I went inside thinking that this would be a fairly modest mine. And, to be fair, the main haulage adit was of about an average size. However, all of the ore passages and suggestions of extensive upper levels still didn’t prepare me for the scale of what was above me. After ascending the metal ladder near the portal, I discovered there was a massive labyrinth of chambers and drifts spanning multiple levels above the main haulage adit. As I worked my way through chamber after breasted out chamber, I just could not believe how much was up there. In fact, for the first time ever, I was not able to finish a mine exploration. Yes, it was THAT big. The batteries on everything but my flashlight died and even my flashlight battery was starting to fade, so I had to wrap it up without being able to fully explore this abandoned mine as I like to do (since I hate the feeling of unfinished business). I was in this mine for hours and I walked around inside so much, that I gave myself severe blisters from the waders (which are not intended for distance walking). I really had no idea what I was getting into with this mine and it is definitely one of the most surprising mines I have ever been inside… The earliest written records of this abandoned mine that I could find were newspaper articles dating back to 1908. However, the articles also mention that the mine used to be known by another name and dates back even earlier. So, we know that the mine is well over a century old. We’re just not sure of exactly how old or what its origins are. The most extensive work appears to have been done during the 1920s and 1930s when thousands of feet of drifts were driven in (and apparently this is when the labyrinth was more fully developed). ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! It really does make a difference… You can click here for the full playlist of abandoned mines: https://goo.gl/TEKq9L If you like these videos on exploring abandoned mines, please subscribe! https://goo.gl/yjPxH1 Thanks for watching! ***** Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them – nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well. These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand – bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born. So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures! #ExploringAbandonedMines #MineExploring #AbandonedMines #UndergroundMineExploring

🔥 Australia's worst mining disaster Dalyston No 20 Shaft Historical site Wonthaggi

09:28
Two significant coal mine disasters took place here at the no 20 Shaft in Dalyston, Victoria, Australia 📌 The first occurred during the first year of operation on the 20th February 1931, when 4 men died underground. Then disaster strikes once again, on the 15th February 1937, in which another 13 men died underground this explosion was so powerful ,it blew the cage out of the shaft some 40 ft above the surface, and hit the poppet head, making this the worst mining disaster in Australia's history. The newspaper of the day "the Canberra Times" can be read from the national archives. (Link Below) 📌 http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/2424471 📌 This second disaster, in which Thirteen miners were killed from the explosion, resulted in a successful national campaign to improve conditions for all Australian miners. So at least some good came from the sad deaths of these miners. May they rest in piece. The Dalyston township today, is nothing more than a few assorted stones and cement slabs laying around, and allotment numbers found on maps of the area. Mines used in tanker attack match those used by Iran: U.S. Navy

01:34
The US Navy on Wednesday displayed limpet mine fragments and a magnet removed from an oil tanker attacked in the Gulf last week, saying the mines looked Iranian at press conference in the UAE (pictured: damage to the Japanese-owned vessel, left; anchored off the coast of Fujaira, top right; and part of the limpet charge, bottom right). 'The limpet mine that was used in the attack is distinguishable and also strikingly bearing a resemblance to Iranian mines that have already been publicly displayed in Iranian military parades,' said Commander Sean Kido at the Naval Forces Central Command (NAVCENT), near the Fujairah port in the UAE. What is ASTEROID MINING? What does ASTEROID MINING mean? ASTEROID MINING meaning & explanation

04:46
What is ASTEROID MINING? What does ASTEROID MINING mean? ASTEROID MINING meaning - ASTEROID MINING definition - ASTEROID MINING explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. Asteroid mining is the exploitation of raw materials from asteroids and other minor planets, including near-Earth objects. Minerals and volatiles could be mined from an asteroid or spent comet then used in space for in-situ utilization (e.g. construction materials and rocket propellant) or taken back to Earth. These include gold, iridium, silver, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhenium, rhodium, ruthenium and tungsten for transport back to Earth; iron, cobalt, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, aluminium, and titanium for construction; water and oxygen to sustain astronauts; as well as hydrogen, ammonia, and oxygen for use as rocket propellant. Due to the astronomically high costs of current space transportation, extraction techniques still being developed and lingering uncertainties about target selection, terrestrial mining is currently the only means of raw mineral acquisition today. Based on known terrestrial reserves, and growing consumption in both developed and developing countries, key elements needed for modern industry and food production could be exhausted on Earth within 50–60 years. These include phosphorus, antimony, zinc, tin, lead, indium, silver, gold and copper. In response, it has been suggested that platinum, cobalt and other valuable elements from asteroids may be mined and sent to Earth for profit, used to build solar-power satellites and space habitats, and water processed from ice to refuel orbiting propellant depots. Although asteroids and Earth accreted from the same starting materials, Earth's relatively stronger gravity pulled all heavy siderophilic (iron-loving) elements into its core during its molten youth more than four billion years ago. This left the crust depleted of such valuable elements until a rain of asteroid impacts re-infused the depleted crust with metals like gold, cobalt, iron, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, osmium, palladium, platinum, rhenium, rhodium, ruthenium and tungsten (some flow from core to surface does occur, e.g. at the Bushveld Igneous Complex, a famously rich source of platinum-group metals). Today, these metals are mined from Earth's crust, and they are essential for economic and technological progress. Hence, the geologic history of Earth may very well set the stage for a future of asteroid mining. In 2006, the Keck Observatory announced that the binary Jupiter trojan 617 Patroclus, and possibly large numbers of other Jupiter trojans, are likely extinct comets and consist largely of water ice. Similarly, Jupiter-family comets, and possibly near-Earth asteroids that are extinct comets, might also provide water. The process of in-situ resource utilization—using materials native to space for propellant, thermal management, tankage, radiation shielding, and other high-mass components of space infrastructure—could lead to radical reductions in its cost. Although whether these cost reductions could be achieved, and if achieved would offset the enormous infrastructure investment required, is unknown. Ice would satisfy one of two necessary conditions to enable "human expansion into the Solar System" (the ultimate goal for human space flight proposed by the 2009 "Augustine Commission" Review of United States Human Space Flight Plans Committee): physical sustainability and economic sustainability. From the astrobiological perspective, asteroid prospecting could provide scientific data for the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI). Some astrophysicists have suggested that if advanced extraterrestrial civilizations employed asteroid mining long ago, the hallmarks of these activities might be detectable. Why extraterrestrials would have resorted to asteroid mining in near proximity to earth, with its readily available resources, has not been explained.

Exploring The Abandoned Calhoun Mine - Part 2 of 2

24:15
Chamber after chamber, drift after drift and level after level running in all directions created a massive labyrinth through the placer deposits in the upper sections of this mine... Even following “Right Hand Rules” in which every fork or junction that one comes to, one goes to the far right in order to not get lost (you go to the far left on the way out) was not sufficient to prevent me from making a couple of wrong turns and having to backtrack on the way out. I think you’ll understand why when you see what it is like in there! I had the impression that there might be more than I had expected on the upper levels after seeing so many ore passages on the level of the main haulage adit (which was itself larger than I anticipated). However, I was still stunned by the enormous workings on the upper levels. To me, they just seemed to go on forever and I ended up spending hours on these upper levels. Aside from the huge scale of the workings, I was also fascinated to be so deeply inside of the placer deposits. The placer is, of course, the compressed remains of the ancient river channels that used to run through this section of where the Sierra Nevada mountains are now. Composed as they are of sand, gravel and round river rock that is simply squeezed together, these placer deposits do not hold up well after breasting (the process of tunneling through and clearing out large chambers where these placer deposits are found). Normally, when we enter historic abandoned placer mines, we encounter major collapses once the mine hits a raise or stope that punched into the placer. This is quite frustrating as some of these mines have many thousands of feet of workings, but we are all too often stopped just a short ways inside the adit. As such, we rarely get to see the actual placer deposits. So, for me, it blew my mind to be so exceptionally deep inside all of these chambers and drifts that were composed entirely of placer deposits. Unquestionably, my favorite section in this abandoned mine was the very, very long and perfectly arched hallway that almost gave the impression of being inside a cathedral. This was one impressive abandoned mine and one that definitely deserves a return visit for more exploring… As reported in the last video, the earliest written records of this abandoned mine that I could find were newspaper articles dating back to 1908. However, the articles also mention that the mine used to be known by another name and dates back even earlier. So, we know that the mine is well over a century old. The most extensive work was apparently done during the 1920s and 1930s when thousands of feet of drifts were driven in (and apparently this is when the labyrinth was more fully developed). ***** All of these videos are uploaded in HD, so adjust those settings to ramp up the quality! Slender : The Arrival - Gameplay Part 5 - Slenderman And Slenderkid

09:07
If you like this video, you can comment, like and subscribe. About this part (repost from wikipedia) : "Into the Abyss" Lauren awakes in a field close to the Kullman Mining Facility. As she explores the closed valley, she finds that she must enter a dark tunnel into a mountain that, as is alluded to in a collectible newspaper article, was created by Kullman Mining Co. after purchasing mineral rights from the owners of Oakside Park. As she enters, Lauren sees a sign that instructs that in the event of a power-outage, six generators must be activated in order to power the emergency lift and escape. As she powers the generators, she realizes that she is being chased by a figure in a white hood and a mask, later revealed to be Kate, driven violently mad by the Slenderman's influence. The situation becomes worse due to the fact that Lauren is also being chased by the Slender Man who starts appearing in front of her at random times after the second generator is powered. As all six generators are activated, Lauren activates the lift and is risen to the top of the mining shaft, transitioning to Chapter 4. On Hardcore difficulty, Lauren has to collect gas canisters before activating the generators. Thank you for watching and see you in next video ~

Cherry Mine Part 07

"THE FLAMES CAUGHT US" Cherry Mine 1909 The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library will open a major exhibit "The Flames Caught Us" Cherry Mine 1909 on November 1, 2009 to mark the 100th anniversary of the Cherry Mine Disaster. On November 13, 1909, a fire broke out at the St. Paul Coal mine in Cherry, Illinois that claimed the lives of 259 men and boys. The exhibit will be free to the public running through March 31, 2010 at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library. Fire in the Mine! The St. Paul Coal Company Mine in Cherry, a mining town in Bureau County, began operation in 1905 and supplied the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad with 300,000 tons of coal annually for its locomotives. The mine featured the latest equipment and operated smoothly until November 13, 1909, when a torch caught a load of hay on fire about 500 feet below the surface. Of the 490 men and boys in the mine at the time, a total of 259 died from the fire itself or the poisonous gases it produced. A Story of Heroism Heroic rescue efforts, including one in which 12 rescuers themselves died, filled newspaper accounts of the disaster. The one incredible survival story involved the "eight-day" men, a group of 21 trapped miners who sealed themselves off from the fire and were rescued eight days later by a team that had been sent below to retrieve bodies. Voices from the Past The exhibit will tell the story of the coal mining disaster in the words of those who witnessed first hand the tragic events in November 1909. The collections of the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library which include photographs, coroner's reports, oral histories, published books, newspaper articles, government reports, music, and manuscript resource materials pertaining to the mine disaster will be used in conjunction with coal mining artifacts to tell and interpret the story of the tragedy at the Cherry Mine. Lessons Learned While informing the public about the coal mining industry, immigrant labor, and mine safety at the turn of the 20th Century, the exhibit will take them beyond the tragedy to understand the changes the Cherry Mine Disaster made in the advancement of labor welfare and mine safety enjoyed by miners in the 21st Century. As a result of the Cherry Mine Disaster, safety regulations were implemented throughout the mining industry, and a liability act, which became what is now the Illinois Workers' Compensation Act, was enacted.

2901. Big Coal Don't Like This Man At All (Original) at Melbourne Unitarian Church

06:53
I sang this song at the Melbourne Unitarian Peace Memorial Church last Sunday. I chose it because it fitted in with the theme of the address, by Jacob Grech, on "Whistleblowers: the new 'Terrorists' which focused especially on the campaign against Julian Assange. It's not often I get the chance to sing this song, mainly because it is rather long - even when I leave out a couple of verses as I've done here. Charles Scott Howard, from the mountains of Southeastern Kentucky has been a tireless fighters for miners' rights for many years, especially with regard to safety issues. The song is a tribute to this hero of the mines, and to his lawyer, Tony Oppegard, who sent me a newspaper article in 2011 about the life and achievements of Mr Howard. You can read it here: https://www.huffingtonpost.com.au/2011/09/14/charles-scott-howard-whistleblower-miner_n_960180.html I first put this song on YouTube in 2011 in a video made with my friend Marco Acca in Rome. You can hear the unabridged song here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ljtxjFKB718 Complete lyrics and chords can be found here: http://www.raymondfolk.com/page/Big+Coal+Don%27t+Like+This+Man+At+all You can hear a playlist of my original songs (in alphabetical order) here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=B9F8E3B7A8822951 You can see a playlist of my mining songs here: http://www.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=CF909DA14CE415DF For lyrics and chords of all my songs, please see my website: http://raymondfolk.wikifoundry.com

Westray Mine disaster - The Last Shift - the fifth estate

29:11
On May 9th 1992 an explosion ripped apart the Westray Coal Mine in Pictou County, Nova Scotia killing 26 miners. The Fifth Estate and the Journal co-produced this story about the tragedy. The mine was opened the year before despite misgivings that the geology of the area was unstable and prone to large volumes of methane gas. The Federal Government was reluctant help the private company starting the mine after numerous reports cited geological concerns. But after heavy lobbying the mine opened. From the beginning miners complained of safety issues, rock falls, high methane gas levels and large amounts of coal dust. The company's output and quality of coal were disappointing. Inspectors visited the mine 49 times. Critics claim inspectors didn't take the conditions seriously enough and that the company was negligent. Government officials say it's not at fault. But the miners say even if the mine were to reopen they would never go back.Linden MacIntyre hosts.

AY23: The Enterprise Mine

I explore the area around one of the bigger gold producers in the lower Mother Lode area back in the 1880's. Workings include underground openings with an overall depth of 121.92 meters. They are comprised of levels, stopes, and a winze. According to a newspaper article in 1933, "This property has been acquired by a St. Louis syndicate, headed by Arthur W. Lambert, Jr., and Edmund H, Serrano. Mr. Lambert is the son of A. W. Lambert, who built the Lambert Pharmacal company, while Mr. Serrano Is the son of a former Mexican consul in St. Louis. With them also are associated a number of St. Louis business men. The property Is equipped with a 35-ton mill which will be placed Into operation very shortly and a development program has been outlined anticipating increasing the capacity of the mill to a 50 ton per day basis." I plan on exploring the lower area in hopes of running across the mill since I didn't see any sign of a building of that size. Be prepared to run across lots of poison ivy if you attempt to reach this mine and bring tall rubber boots or waders if you want to go in. Considering the massive tailings outside of the adit, expect extensive workings that go on for a long distance if you go in.

Cherry Mine Part 04

Metallic Minerals $MMG.V $MMNGF Exploring In One of the Highest Grade Silver Districts in the World

14:07
http://goldstocktrades.com/blog I recently spoke with Greg Johnson CEO and Chairman of Metallic Minerals (MMG.V or MMNGF). Greg has over 28 years of precious metals exploration experience spending some time as exploration manager at Placer Dome which later became Barrick. Placer Dome produced some of the greatest exploration geologists in the world. Greg then went on to start Novagold which went from literally pennies to close to $20 at one point earlier in the gold bull market. Greg is a geologist by background but specializes in putting together an experienced team in jurisdictions such as Alaska and the Yukon to discover new mineral resources. Greg's team at Metallic is focusing on high grade silver in the Yukon in Keno Hill adjacent to silver producer Alexco (AXU) who produces silver from some of the highest grade ore in the world. Most silver comes from much riskier jurisdictions like Argentina, Bolivia and Mexico. Recently Kaminak a near term Yukon gold producer was acquired by Goldcorp as they search for production in mining friendly and geopolitically stable jurisdictions. Could some of the other big silver producers look to come into Yukon's Keno Hill where some of the highest grade silver is found? I believe silver could continue outperforming gold to the upside and this Canadian silver district which is much higher grade could get a premium as it does not present as much political uncertainty as Mexico or Bolivia. Keno Hill has been mined for many years so there is existing infrastructure such as power and highway. Greg's technical team at Metallic believe there is more discoveries to be made in Keno Hill especially near Alexco where Metallic owns an adjoining property and is the second largest land owner in the district. They have four historic producing mines with some of the highest grade historic production in the district. Right now Metallic has a first class exploration team taking historical information and using modern techniques to develop drill targets to hopefully make a new high grade and large silver discovery. Metallic is still in the early stage and is just beginning as a company changing its name and appointing management this month. However, I expect that it could begin getting noticed by the larger investment community over the next few months. The technical team is top notch with a track record of mineral discovery success with specialized experience in the Yukon. They have skin in the game with management owning a significant stake in the company of more than 25%. The share structure is still very tight which means a discovery or eventual takeout could be a big value creator. Remember this is an exploration story so it has more risk yet more potential upside than a producer or developer. Nevertheless, the combination of management, exploration assets plus tight capital structure are the right ingredients for outsized performance. Disclosure: I own securities in Metallic Minerals and the company is a website sponsor. This should be considered a conflict of interest as I could benefit from price/volume increase and have been compensated. 1293. Big Coal Don't Like This Man At All (Original) - with Marco Acca on guitar

This song is a tribute to Charles Scott Howard, from Southeastern Kentucky, a tireless fighter for miners' rights, especially with regard to safety, and to his lawyer, Tony Oppegard, who sent me this newspaper article on which I based the song: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2011/09/14/charles-scott-howard-whistleblower-miner_n_960180.html The melody is partly based on a tune used by Woody Guthrie, who wrote many songs in support of working men, including miners. My thanks to Marco Acca for his great guitar accompaniment at very short notice (less than an hour).
