So this is certainly a biased viewpoint, personally and professionally. Many times I’m asked what my opinion is on other modalities, and so I offer this up merely as my best guess and personal take on Graston Technique. I’ve watched videos that describe and demonstrate Graston Techniques, and I’ve also worked with a number of clients that tried it and gave me their feedback. Some loved it, some tried it and didn’t notice a difference in their pain. Some reported bruising, and one client reported a massive inflammatory response around his knee that lasted over a week. As with any modality, the Practitioner (or in this case clinician) matters a lot. This is my general sense of why Graston might be beneficial, and why it might pose potential risks: Why Graston might be beneficial: I believe the way the tools are used could have a very positive effect (if used gently) on the superficial fascia, and along with that your lymph system. However there’s also potential risk here (see below). Other possible benefits are stimulating blood flow (which is always a good thing and can aid in healing) and creating brain-body awareness via sensation of specific body parts. Potential risks: Since this tool likely only works superficially, there’s definitely a possibility of stimulating lymph without necessarily taking into consideration what might happen if the entire lymph system isn’t ready for a big toxic dump. Ever heard of a “fascia release flu”? This is caused when too much superficial fascia is stimulated, which moves the lymph and causes it to dump a big toxic load into a duct that either isn’t open or hasn’t been prepared for such a giant toxin release…so the toxins are recirculated and…you get sick as a result. It is my firm opinion that bruising and purposely creating an inflammatory response is NEVER wise. I don’t believe you have to create bruising to heal, and in fact this is damage your body now has to deal with in addition to the injury you’re trying to heal. On top of that, I don’t see an upside to creating an unnatural inflammatory response. Some people claim it stimulates the body’s healing process. But if your body wasn’t already using an inflammatory response to heal this particular injury - there might be good reason for that, no? Why Graston will never release fascia at deeper levels: I’ve been working with fascia (and people in pain) since 2008 and those deep layers of fascia need to be released with a LOT of safe compression and movement on the part of the client (YOU). I don’t believe you can ever truly release fascia through something passive like Graston. Fascia needs cross friction “shearing” to pull the 360 degree fibers apart from one another. Fascia also responds best when it’s recruited to change itself. With really aggressive use of a Graston tool (hey it may not be the method but the clinician), I believe it’s possible to create scar tissue and inflammation at the site of use which can give the appearance even through palpation of smoother “connective tissue.” Your pain may even go away, because one of your body’s ways of coping with pain is to create scar tissue or “thicker skin” (calcium deposits, lipomas, bunions etc). In my opinion there are better ways to address pain that don’t pose the same risks, but I encourage you to do what works for YOUR body. If you love Graston - yay!

In this video I want to show you how to easily calculate your Social Security benefit without a fancy calculator, software or help from someone who doesn’t really care if your information they give you is correct or not (like you may get at the Social Security Administration). When we finish, you’ll know how to do this calculation on your own in just a few simple steps. So why would you need to know how to do this calculation on your own? It’s important for a few reasons. First, it never hurts to understand the mechanics behind an income stream that’ll probably be a large part of your overall retirement income. Second, the SSA makes projections about your future income as part of your benefits estimate. On the benefits statement they say plainly, “we assume your earnings will continue at the same level until your retirement age and if they are different, your benefit will not match the estimate” AND “we can’t provide your actual benefit amount until you apply for benefits.” This all means that if your earnings are different than their projections, your benefit will not match the estimate. So, understanding how to do this calculation is especially important if you plan to retire early or later than “normal” or if you have a significant earnings change in the last few years of working. To do this calculation, there are only three steps and each has some sub-steps as well. First, you’ll need to find your Average Indexed Monthly Earnings, or AIME. Then you apply that AIME to the benefit formula and then adjust for filing age. Don’t worry…I’ll walk you carefully through each step so it’ll be clear. Sauna use has been around for hundreds of years, but modern science is only beginning to scratch the surface on why heat therapy is so beneficial for your health. In this video I am going to show you the top 7 benefits of using a sauna. Benefit 1: Saunas relieve stress Most regular sauna users, including myself cite stress relief as the number one benefit of sauna use. In our adrenaline filled, go-go world, it is nice to just block out 15-20 minutes in a hot sauna and block out all external stimulus. I always emerge from sauna session feeling less stressed, more energy, and an overall feeling of calm. Benefit 2: Improved Endurance Just today I was in the sauna and checked my heart rate after about 15 minutes, and it was at 120 beats per minute. That is the equivalent of moderate exercise on a treadmill. Think of using the the sauna as a “free” cardio workout. In fact, Over the course of a nine-week study, six male runners undertook a series of three 3-week training blocks: one where every training session was followed with a 30-min sauna session, a “washout” period to eliminate any confounding variables, and a control period with the same training but no sauna use. After each training block, the runners completed a treadmill run to exhaustion at personal-record 5k pace. Regular sauna use resulted in a 30% increase in time to exhaustion, which, according to the authors of the study, would translate to about a 2% improvement in time in an actual race. Benefit 3: Saunas help detoxify your body Maybe you’ve heard of people saying they need to sweat out the alcohol in a sauna after a long night of a drinking. Turns out, they weren’t far from the truth. If you want to rid your body of toxic agents such as lactic acid, sodium, and uric acid that routinely occur in the body. The sauna may be just want the doctor ordered. The Increased circulation also improves blood flow and blood oxygenation. Enhanced oxygen levels help dissolve toxins in the blood. Benefit 4: Sauna Use has been linked to decreased Heart disease Most of us know that one of the leading causes of death in the world is heart disease. Heart disease runs in my family, so any preventative measures I can take, I do. In an exhaustive study: Researchers from the University of Eastern Finland tracked 2,300 middle-aged men for an average of 20 years. They categorized the men into three groups according to how often they used a sauna each week. The men spent an average of 14 minutes per visit baking in 175° F heat. Over the course of the study, 49% of men who went to a sauna once a week died, compared with 38% of those who went two to three times a week and just 31% of those who went four to seven times a week. Frequent visits to a sauna were also associated with lower death rates from cardiovascular disease and stroke. Benefit 5: Saunas help you sleep better Do you have trouble falling or staying asleep? The evidence would say that for most people the answer is a resounding yes. With the over the counter and prescription sleep aid business booming, most people are having trouble getting a good night’s rest. Research has shown that a deeper, more relaxed sleep can result from sauna use. In addition to the release of endorphins, body temperatures, which become elevated in the late evening,fall at bedtime. This slow, relaxing decline in endorphins is key in facilitating sleep. Benefit 6: Sauna use helps decrease muscle soreness I do my best to stay active. Working out, participating in rec leagues, and chasing my 4 year old son around. My body gets beat up pretty bad. When that happens I turn to the sauna. Whether you are a weekend warrior or a pro athlete, jumping in the sauna will help your aching muscles recover. The high heat of the sauna releases endorphins, and creates a tranquilizing effect on your muscles. The increased blood flow increases your circulation and can help in the healing of minor bruises. Benefit 7: Saunas can help fight illness As I record this video we are about to head directly into cold and flu season. At the Fit Father Project, it’s our main aim to help you and your family create the habits you need to live a healthier and fitter life. Building muscle is only one of the areas we can help you with. We also have videos on nutrition, weight loss, meditation, sleep, and many other ‘lifestyle’ areas. Let’s dive on in! **Why Should You Build Muscle Over 40? First off, why do you need to build muscle after 40? Well, as we age, our muscle mass starts to decrease naturally. This is called Sarcopenia and is responsible for an 8-10% loss in muscle tissue every decade of our lives. As muscle tissue is the main driver of our metabolic rate (around 2.5 - 3 times more metabolically active than fat), the more muscle you lose and the slower your metabolism becomes. *Reason #1 – Boosts Metabolism Building muscle after 40 helps to reduce this natural muscle loss I've mentioned above, called Sarcopenia, so maintains your metabolism at a higher rate. This means the aesthetic look of your body will not go to that stage of looking frail and aged, or worse, grossly overweight, but will maintain a strong looking physique and a body with a highly active metabolism. *Reason #2 – Functional Strength As mentioned above, losing muscle tissue can push you to that state of being frail and losing ‘functional strength’, which is basically your ability to complete ordinary, functional tasks to their full capacity. Men that continue to lose functional strength in their later years can end up being reliant on others and often need nursing home care. *Reason #3 – Better Brain Function Another solid reason to gain muscle after 40 is to improve your brain function and memory. This is a fascinating subject and something you wouldn’t usually expect, but research is showing that having a stronger body also leads to a stronger mind and better brain function. The improvement in your mitochondria and intra-cellular metabolism benefits your brain as well as your body! **Tips To Get Started *Tip #1 – Full Body Training The safest way to start building muscle after 40 is to partake in full body training sessions. These types of workouts use the best compound muscle building exercises to condition your body, build muscle, and help you stay stronger as you age. This means you work all the major muscle groups in your upper body in one session and all those in your lower body on a separate day. This type of training is more intense, but still allows good recovery time between workouts. *Tip #3 – Avoid Splits Routines Splitting your muscle groups down any further after the age of 40 is not recommended, purely because of the recovery ability you have as you get older. It is not as high as it was when you were in your 20’s and maybe 30’s, so sticking with full body or upper/lower splits is my recommendation for building muscle after 40. *Tip #4 – Modify For Safety My last tip here is to BE SAFE! As you get older, it’s not just muscle tissue that’s affected, but your joints and general body wear and tear too. Your joints have been through 40+ years of work, children, exercise, etc. so you need to protect them. Warm up and Cool down properly, use safe exercises, and work with weights that you can push your limits, but manage without causing injury. Safety and injury prevention is key to long-term success. BLB Resources - What is a HUD Home and Benefits of Buying a HUD Home http://www.blbresources.com http://www.HUDHomestore.com Have you ever wondered what a HUD Home is, who can buy one, and what the process is? Have you ever thought about the benefits of buying a HUD Home versus other properties on the market? If so, I have some great information for you that’ll be extremely beneficial when you’re shopping for your next home. My name is Roger Love and I am speaking today on behalf of BLB Resources, a HUD - Housing and Urban Development, Asset Manager in 14 states in the US. There are so many misconceptions of what a HUD home is, but I’m here to separate fact from fiction. First, a HUD home is a 1-to-4-unit residential property acquired by HUD as a result of a foreclosure action on an FHA-insured mortgage. HUD becomes the property owner, and offers it for sale to recover the loss on the foreclosure claim. Anyone who has the required cash, or can qualify for a loan, can buy a HUD Home. The homes are initially offered to owner-occupant purchasers (people who are buying the home as their primary residence). There’s an initial priority period specifically for owner occupants, but after that, unsold properties are available to all buyers, including investors. There are many benefits to purchasing a HUD Home. Let me share some of those with you now. Benefit 1 - HUD is actually willing to pay up to 3% of the buyers closing costs. However, that has to be included and negotiated in the contract when you make a bid. And this benefit is only available to Owner Occupants, so if you’re an investor, you’re not eligible for the closing cost credit. Benefit 2 - If a HUD home happens to be a condo, your lender will not require condo project approval as project approvals are not required on FHA/HUD Real estate owned transactions, and there are also no minimum owner-occupancy requirements. Benefit 3 – If a HUD Home needs minor repairs, and a buyer is using FHA financing, then the cost of the repairs (up to $10,000 maximum) can be included in their FHA loan. This type of financing is called ‘Insured with Escrow Repair’ and it’s only available on HUD home listings that are listed as FHA Insured. Benefit 4 – All HUD Homes are listed with an Owner Occupant Priority bidding period, so during that time, you’re not competing against any investors. Benefit 5 – If you win your bid, and the home is priced at $50,000 or less, you can initiate the contract with as little as a $500 Earnest Money Deposit. And if the property is priced at more than $50,000, you’ll need a $1,000 deposit. Benefit 6 – If you’re purchasing a HUD home in the states of Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island or Vermont, and you’re a qualified owner/occupant, there’s an incredible limited time sales incentive program, that allows you to buy the home, and only pay a $100 down payment. This is undeniably one of the greatest benefits of all. Next – HUD also offers an amazing incentive called the ‘Good Neighbor Next Door Program’. If you happen to be a Law Enforcement Officer, a pre-Kindergarten through 12th Grade School Teacher, a firefighter, or an Emergency Medical Technician. HUD will offer a discount of 50% off the list price of the home if it’s in a designated revitalized HUD home area. To qualify, you need to live in the property for 36 months, and have it be your sole primary residence. Buyers can use this program ‘as well as’ the $100 down payment incentive. The number of properties available are limited, and the list changes weekly. Benefit 8 - All HUD homes available nationwide are listed on the website www.HUDHomestore.com, which makes it very convenient for buyers to shop online, anytime. But you still have to have a HUD registered Real Estate Agent submit bids on your behalf. A wide range of rare minerals can be found here in abundance, all commanding high prices in world commodity markets. Diamonds for jewellery, tantalum, tungsten and gold for electronics; uranium used in power generation and weaponry and many others. Congo has copious deposits of raw materials that are in high demand internationally but remains one of the poorest countries in the world. From colonisation, with the horrors of slavery and other atrocities, to a turbulent and equally brutal present in which militant groups control the mines, Congo’s richness in natural resources has brought nothing but misery. Referred to as “conflict minerals”, these riches leave only a trail of death, destruction and poverty. Under Belgian rule, Congolese labourers were often required to meet quotas when mining different minerals. Failure could mean punishment by having a hand cut off with a machete. The country gained independence in 1960, but that didn’t put a stop to slave and child labour or to crimes being committed to extract and exploit the minerals. Warring militant fractions from inside the country and beyond seized control of mines for their own benefit while terrorising local populations. For our translator, Bernard Kalume Buleri, his country’s history of turmoil is very personal; like most Congolese people, he and his family fell victim to the unending mineral based power struggle. Born in the year of his country’s independence, he has lived through war and seen his homeland torn apart by violent looting and greed. His story is a damning testament, illustrating how nature’s bounty, instead of being a blessing, becomes a deadly curse.
