SWOT analysis in practice - Starbucks -------------------------------- Strategy analysis has two main branches – analysis of a firm’s external environment and analysis of a firm’s internal environment. SWOT is a famous framework that allows us to combine the two types of analysis. SWOT is sometimes referred to as internal-external analysis. The acronym SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. The first two, Strengths and Weaknesses, are related to a firm’s internal environment, while the last two, Opportunities and Threats, consider its external environment. Internal strengths and external opportunities are vertically paired as helpful elements, while internal weaknesses and external threats are paired as harmful elements. if we perform a company analysis, under strengths, we would expect to see its core competences, the areas where the business excels and has a competitive advantage over competitors. Weaknesses are areas that need improvement. Such vulnerabilities place a company at a disadvantage when competing against other firms. Opportunities can be seen as favorable factors existing in a company’s external environment, in the industry where it operates, and have the potential to improve its current results and competitive positioning. Threats arise in a company’s external environment and might harm its current business.

SWOT Analysis

30:49
SWOT Analysis is a useful technique for understanding your Strengths and Weaknesses, and for identifying both the Opportunities open to you and the Threats you face. Some people claim that Humphrey devised the SWOT analysis technique while working for the Stanford Research Institute it is clear from his 2005 paper that he is not the originator of SWOT, and he disputes it was Harvard or MIT either. So  The origin of the term SWOT remains unknown Used in a business context, it helps you carve a sustainable niche in your market. Used in a personal context , it helps you develop your career in a way that takes best advantage of your talents, abilities and opportunities.

SWOT Analysis & TOWS Analysis with Examples

10:31
In this video, I am explaining another very important tool in DEFINE phase i.e. SWOT analysis, acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. By using this tool, it forces team to think about the process or business, in a complete new way. We must carry out TOWS analysis after SWOT analysis, which is missed in many practical cases. I have explained importance of it in this video. A SWOT analysis is helping us to develop a strong business strategy by making sure that we have considered all of our business’s Strengths and Weaknesses, as well as the Opportunities and Threats in the marketplace. I have explained this concept with practical example which is very easy to understand. I have also explained a TOWS analysis, which is an extension of SWOT analysis and most important for developing strategies. I have explained all TOWS strategies also with practical examples. I am sure you will like it.

01:03
SWOT analysis, great summary. SWOT is a strategic planning method used to evaluate the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats involved in a project or in a business venture. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. The technique is credited to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at Stanford University in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies (source: WIKIPEDIA)

What is SWOT ANALYSIS? What does SWOT ANALYSIS mean? SWOT ANALYSIS meaning, definition & explanation

What is SWOT ANALYSIS? What does SWOT ANALYSIS mean? SWOT ANALYSIS meaning - SWOT ANALYSIS definition - SWOT ANALYSIS explanation. Source: Wikipedia.org article, adapted under https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ license. SWOT analysis (alternatively SWOT matrix) is an acronym for strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats—and is a structured planning method that evaluates those four elements of a project or business venture. A SWOT analysis can be carried out for a company, product, place, industry, or person. It involves specifying the objective of the business venture or project and identifying the internal and external factors that are favorable and unfavorable to achieve that objective. Some authors credit SWOT to Albert Humphrey, who led a convention at the Stanford Research Institute (now SRI International) in the 1960s and 1970s using data from Fortune 500 companies. However, Humphrey himself did not claim the creation of SWOT, and the origins remain obscure. The degree to which the internal environment of the firm matches with the external environment is expressed by the concept of strategic fit. Strengths: characteristics of the business or project that give it an advantage over others; Weaknesses: characteristics that place the business or project at a disadvantage relative to others; Opportunities: elements that the business or project could exploit to its advantage; and Threats: elements in the environment that could cause trouble for the business or project Identification of SWOTs is important because they can inform later steps in planning to achieve the objective. First, decision makers should consider whether the objective is attainable, given the SWOTs. If the objective is not attainable, they must select a different objective and repeat the process. Users of SWOT analysis must ask and answer questions that generate meaningful information for each category (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats) to make the analysis useful and find their competitive advantage.
