Managing Human Resources in Organizations
Human resources (or more simply, people) who work in organizations may have valuable contributions they can make to a firm’s mission based on their human capital. But this will occur only if people are developed and have a reasonable opportunity to contribute. Managing people ultimately has to do with the decisions these leaders make from among the wide range of possible choices on the formal policies, practices, and methods for managing employees. A core competency is a unique capability that creates high value for a company. How might employees become a core competency for an organization? One of the main issues that must be addressed is developing human capital in employees. Building positive human capital brings together all assets of an organization so that work gets done and the company functions well. Organizations must manage four types of assets to be successful. These four types of organizational assets include the following. Physical assets such as buildings, land, furniture, computers, vehicles, and equipment. Financial assets including cash, financial resources, stocks, bonds or debt. Intellectual property assets like specialized research capabilities, patents, information systems, designs, operating processes, and copyrights. Human assets which are Individuals with their talents, capabilities, experience, professional expertise, and relationships. Human capital is not just the people in organizations - it also involves what individuals contribute to organizational achievements. Broadly defined, human capital is the collective value of the capabilities, knowledge, skills, life experiences, and motivation of an organization’s workforce. There are many other possible areas in which employees can be core competencies for organizations. Productivity, customer service and quality, and organizational culture represent several of these areas. At the core of human resource management is the process of designing the formal systems that are used to manage people in an organization.

WSRS - Managing Server Resources
With Web applications and virtual servers, managing resources is key to responsive systems. Microsoft has provided the Windows System Resource Manager to reign in the chaos! A server's RAM and Processor time is in hot demand in today's web enabled and virtual environment. A poorly managed system can slow to a crawl. In this video from our Windows Server 2008 R2 Administration class, Chris Ward and Doug Bassett talks about installation of WSRS and how to do some baseline configuration. WSRS lets you manage the percentage of resources an application, or even virtual server, can use in relation to all the other services on the machine. Proper configuration can help ensure you aren't starving mission critical systems of the resources they need. This is an example of the real-world, online HD certification training done at Stormwind.com. If you have any questions, feel free to email our Senior Technical Instructor Doug Bassett at [email protected] We look forward to seeing you in class soon. stormwind.com

Designing Smart Urban Water Systems: Marcus Quigley at TEDxBeaconStreet
We have built our cities largely assuming that water, when not of drinking water quality and properly contained in pressurized pipes, was mostly a nuisance: something to be avoided on roadways, kept out of basements, or piped to the nearest conveyance that could carry it away as quickly as possible. As a society we are rethinking these assumptions and looking more closely at the choices we make and how the actions we take affect the value of water. Mr. Quigley elucidates the complexity, scale, and hidden challenges in current urban water management as well as shows examples and live demonstrations of disruptive technologies including live feeds from intelligent and forecast integrated rainwater harvesting systems, combined gray water/stormwater systems, green roofs that think on their own, and ambient information systems that tie people to their water environment by integrating information into living spaces. As Director of Research and Development for Real-Time Services at Geosyntec, Marcus Quigley works on solutions of some of the country's most challenging urban water infrastructure problems through a variety of innovative approaches including physical environmental computing (i.e., treating the physical world as an extension of the virtual internet). In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

The Must-Haves for a Successful Training Management System
Considering a new training management system to most efficiently manage scheduling, resources, qualifications and learning? This video presents the must-haves for a successful solution. Every organization has its own business processes, terminology, structure and goals. Your solution should be configurable and flexible enough to adjust to your business processes, supporting every department and role. Maintaining separate systems within an organization is costly and cumbersome. One integrated system with wide capabilities can satisfy all current and future requirements. With a comprehensive system you can achieve reduced IT costs, streamlined implementation and improve communication between departments. Implementing a new system is a sizable financial commitment. In order to achieve a substantial return on this investment, you need a system that not only automates tedious manual processes, but optimizes them, delivering significant economic value. Managers need to make decisions at the right time. Training Management Systems can help with dynamic decision-supporting tools, personalized for each role and function. Managerial dashboards, reports, alerts and notifications can empower your leaders to drive success. Your training management system will not exist in isolation. To support your business processes, it must be able to interface with other systems such as HR and operations. Look for a system designed for easy integration and smooth data migration. A positive user experience and friendly interface is crucial for successful assimilation. Your system should be easy to operate, provide great performance, and display role-based personalized portals and views. Finally, successful implementation is not achieved by technology alone. You need a specialist partner who knows your industry, speaks your language, has a proven methodology, and will do all it takes to transform your goals into the most efficient and effective processes.

Systems Approach to Water Resources Managment_BC Hydro, Feb 2014
This lecture will (i) introduce basic principles of system dynamics simulation and (ii) illustrate its utility in solving complex real-world problems at various scales. System dynamics simulation is a rigorous method of system description, which facilitates feedback analysis via a simulation model of the effects of alternative system structures and control policies on system behavior. Simulation of the model over time is considered essential to understand the dynamics of the system. The power of simulation is the ease of constructing “what if” scenarios and tackling big, messy, real-world problems. The lecture will emphasize one feature that is common to all systems – a system’s structure determines its behavior. The structure-behavior link need not be limited to systems which are well defined historically or analytically. System dynamics can also be used to analyze how structural changes in one part of a system might affect the behavior of the system as a whole. Perturbing a system allows one to test how the system will respond under varying sets of conditions. The Power Point presentation of the lecture is available at: http://slobodansimonovic.com/lectures/L196.pdf
