Now look there are two types of people in this world, those that organize things and the rest of us are just kind of do what they say but if you think you're good with people and you like organizing things maybe human resources could be a career for you. We're here at the Department of Mines to find out what it's all about. You hear the term human resources all the time but it's a pretty obscure and confusing job title. All i know is that it involves dealing with lots of people which is why I'm here at one of the biggest people machines in WA, the Department of Mines and Petroleum to find out exactly what a human resources officer does. Great to meet you Alyce. Well let's start with everything, I need to know if you're working in Human Resources what do you do? So pretty much we work with the employees right through from application to retirement and that could be anything from looking after their safety to training to providing wellness programs or diversity events. So you follow someone's career basically from the beginning right through the end. Yeah while they're in that specific organization. Sure and ok well let's start at the beginning how you came to be in the job. What was your particular path? Where did you study how are you here today? I studied the ECU I studied a bachelor of business and I did a major in human resource management and from that I engaged in lots of different work experience, internship placements I put my name on the templates here at this department and they asked me to come back and work on my initial project. Okay, talk me through a day a typical day of yours when you turn up what do you get up to? First thing I do is look at my emails to make sure there's no employees that are concerned about any issues. That's the first thing you need to get to you need to reply to them quickly. I also because I'm the wellness coordinator I do a lot of events and presentations so i might be one day I might be booking in a presentation I'm checking that staff have RSVP'd properly that kind of thing. We also organize occupational safety and health inductions for new staff so i might be sending out invites. Okay, it's time for you to give us the edge. Can you do that? Absolutely question number one, just quickly from school to what you do now what's the process? Definitely finish high school and an excellent way to increase your opportunities then enroll in either a human resource management course at there's a number of different institutions that offer it or you could do a degree in business and get a a major in human resources or even a psychology degree. Question 2 if I want to be really successful in human resources what characteristics do i need? Definitely a good people person, you need to love working with people, also excellent communication skills that's a big one you need to always be talking with people and also being able to say the same thing to everybody being consistent with your advice to give throughout the organization. And question number three, if you could have done one thing differently but still end up exactly where you are today what would you have done there? Good question i'm quite happy with the path I took but I will say definitely being a little bit more comfortable about asking questions and seeking advice. Well Alyce, thank you so much for talking me through it I now know what it means to work in human resources. Thank you very much it's been really fun. Well there you go that's just the tip of the iceberg of what it means to work in human resources. If you want to get involved you want more info you gotta get onto https://studentedge.org and don't forget if you really keen about it get out there network and meet people.

http://www.teamjaynorman.com - What Are Human Resources Jobs? There Are a Number As you get answers to the question “what are human resources jobs,” you’ll find that the HR department is made up of a number of what might be called sub-specialties or areas that deal with the various different functions that HR handles within an organization. These areas have been evolving since the function first started and was recognized as a profession after the Second World War. The early functions of HR were generally referred to as personnel administration and were concentrated in the area of payroll management. By the 1980’s, the structure of the profession was clearly moving towards where it is today. So, the answer to “what are human resources jobs” will now list a number of areas of HR specialization. These include payroll administration and compensation planning, benefits administration, recruiting and training, career development, HR policy development and administration, and legal compliance. As a result, there are a number of career paths open now for HR professionals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gp_64t6rZeY

HR Basics is a series of short courses, designed to highlight what you need to know about a particular human resource management topic. In today’s HR Basics, we explore human resource management competencies. A competency is a cluster of highly interrelated attributes, including knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) that give rise to the behaviors needed to perform a given job effectively. A set of competencies that collectively defines the requirements for effective performance in a specific job, profession or organization may be called a competency model. Competencies can be either technical or behavioral. Technical competencies reflect the knowledge required to perform a specific role. Behavioral Competencies describe the KSAs that facilitate the application of technical knowledge to job-related behavior. In other words, technical competencies reflect what knowledge HR professionals apply to their jobs, and Behavioral Competencies reflect how they apply this knowledge. In 2011, SHRM began a program of research involving thousands of HR professionals to identify the critical competencies needed for success as an HR professional. This research led to the development of the SHRM Competency Model, which defines eight key behavioral competencies (Ethical Practice, Leadership & Navigation, Business Acumen, Relationship Management, Communication, Consultation, Critical Evaluation and Global & Cultural Effectiveness) and one technical competency (HR Expertise). The SHRM Competency Model provides HR professionals with a comprehensive roadmap for developing the capabilities they need to advance their careers and improve their effectiveness in the workplace. In sum, technical competencies reflect what knowledge HR professionals apply to their jobs, and behavioral competencies reflect how they apply this knowledge. In other words, success stems not only from what you know (knowledge) but also what you do (behavior). Neither is sufficient, however, in isolation.

Human resources in Microsoft Dynamics 365 for Finance and Operations streamlines many routine record keeping tasks and automates a number of processes related to staffing your organization. It also provides a framework for human resources staff to manage areas of oversight. These areas include employee recruitment and retention, benefits administration, training, performance reviews, and change management. This video talks about Jobs in D365 and covers: Job Definition: A job is a collection of tasks and responsibilities that are required of a person who performs a job. A position is an individual instance of a job. Areas of responsibility, job tasks, job functions, skills, education information, and certificates that are required for a job are also required for positions that are associated with a job. Job tasks: You can create job tasks that describe the basic tasks that a worker in a position for that job must complete. The same job task can be added to multiple jobs, and positions for those jobs will inherit those job tasks. Job functions: Job functions are like job tasks. A job function describes one or more tasks, duties or responsibilities that are assigned to a job. Job functions can be assigned to jobs and used to set up and implement eligibility rules for compensation plans. Examples of job functions are Full-time; Part-time; Salary; Hourly pay etc Areas of responsibility: Use areas of responsibility to indicate the work roles, processes, and products that a worker in a position for that job would be responsible for. An example of an area of responsibility for a job titled “Accountant” might be “Financial reporting for Product A”.

http://www.teamjaynorman.com - Is Human Resources a Good Career for You? Yes If you’re researching “is human resources a good career,” you’ll find that HR is a dynamic profession that is growing at an above average rate and has a solid compensation structure. It certainly is worthy of serious consideration, particularly if you enjoy interacting and working with people. There is an aspect of “is human resources a good career” that you don’t always see mentioned when people are discussing the profession. It is that the HR function is a staff, or non-income producing, function within an organization. As a result, in some organizations, it can struggle to get proper attention if top management only focuses on the income producing divisions like sales and marketing or production. This is not a reason to avoid HR as a career but is an aspect that you need to be aware of. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHxZcIuSwPc

If you want to get your dream job, it’s crucially important to make the best possible first impression on the recruiter, and everything, including your style, means a lot. There are five vital things you should know that hiring professionals use to form their opinions about you and decide if you will fit into the corporate culture and get the job or not. Sherry Maysonave, head of Empowerment Enterprises, an image consulting firm based in Austin, Texas, says that the first impression happens in less than 30 seconds and it’s based entirely on your attire. Using the color of your clothes, you can influence other people however you want. Pastel colors in clothes and makeup can help you win other people’s trust. The most important thing is not to overdo it. Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview, unless you’re aiming for a creative job. The color red represents the life force and the inclination to be successful and efficient. Business suits are not always the best choice for a job interview because the impression you may give the employer is that you are “overqualified.” A tasteful statement dress that doesn’t reveal your neckline and ends around 1 inch above the very top of your knee will do just fine. Your attire should be as close to the company dress code as possible. People are more eager to accept other people who are like them, so the more you look like the other employees, the easier it is for an HR manager to imagine you working with them. Music: https://www.youtube.com/audiolibrary/music TIMESTAMPS What the colors of your clothes say about you 0:33 What the style of your clothes says about you 3:21 What your brands say about you 5:07 Illustrative details 5:47 How well can you fit into the corporate culture 6:52 SUMMARY -Blue is probably the best color choice for a job interview. If you choose clothes with contrasting colors, you could make a powerful and dominant impression. The worst color choice for a job interview, according to studies and opinions of specialists, is orange — it’s often associated with something unprofessional. -A business quit is the perfect choice if a manager is hiring for a senior-level position, a flower print dress won’t do in this case. But if you are looking for a job teaching children or a creative job, this type of attire is not just appropriate, but also preferable. -It’s better to impress your prospective employee with your professional achievements and attitude to work than with luxury brand logos. -Bad manicure, old clothes, and other little flaws, can make a very negative impression. Wear small and elegant pieces of jewelry like small earrings, bracelets, and watches. Your bag should have a clear shape. -Use social media to find out all about the company dress code and try to look like the other employees at the interview. Nicole Bowers, a graduate of the Certificate in Human Resources Management, explains how the program helped her reboot her career after a layoff and find a job she loves. To learn more, click here: https://www.pce.uw.edu/certificates/human-resources-management Video Transcript: I had been working as a business manager for a company here in Seattle, and had actually been with a company, coming up on, it would have been coming up on my 15 year anniversary. I was out on maternity leave with my second son and I received a phone call, unfortunately it was a call letting me know that they had eliminated the position that I was in. I was pretty shocked, didn't see it coming, I was a strong performer, I hadn't been thinking about like, my career, in quite a, quite some time. So I went on this whole exploration, like "What am I going to do next?" I just started like combing through different job boards and job descriptions and trying to figure out how can I translate all these skills that I've had for the last 15 years in this industry into other things, new things, innovative things. I want to be different. So I set a goal for myself. I'm like, two years from now, I want to be in a new position, something I love doing. So I decide that maybe I need to get, I need to figure out if HR or some component thereof is for me. So I found the UW certificate program while I was going through all of this exploration, and I thought "Perfect." It was just enough to get a sense for it get some credentialing, and also help me build my network in a space that I felt like I wanted to go in, and that I was able to then transition into. Was one of several doors that opened this new pathway for me to find this job that I absolutely love. It was part of the puzzle that I had been looking for, to help me figure out, you know, what I wanted to do next, and without it, I probably wouldn't be here today. It helped me reinforce that and realize, "Okay. This isn't just a pipe dream. I'm going to go for it."

Human resource professionals deal with the segment of the population that works in current jobs or that is looking for work. The goal is to develop jobs that are inherently motivating to employees or to create work situations that are desirable enough to attract and hire competent workers. Many efforts focus on developing skills to improve employees’ readiness for work. Organizations, including their human resource departments, can also address skills shortages. Work is effort directed toward accomplishing results, and such effort may be performed by humans, machines, or both. The total amount of work to be performed in an organization must be divided into jobs so that effort can be coordinated in some logical way. A job is a grouping of tasks, duties, and responsibilities that constitutes the total work assignment for an employee; these tasks, duties, and responsibilities may change over time, and therefore, the job may change. Workflow analysis is the study of the way work moves through an organization. The result of strong work analysis should be a more responsive workflow for customers, more efficient responses to service problems, and more empowered jobs. Job design refers to organizing tasks, duties, responsibilities, and other elements into a productive unit of work. Job redesign involves changing existing jobs in different ways to improve them. Motivation, performance, and satisfaction can be influenced by the level of each job characteristic. In other words, as one or more factor increases, employees should become more engaged with their work duties and responsibilities. Autonomy and feedback are especially powerful because they can magnify the effects of the other job characteristics. Flexibility can be designed into a job in several different ways, such as by changing where or when the work can be performed. For many employees, balancing their work and personal lives is a significant concern. Work–life balance involves employer-sponsored programs designed to help employees balance work and personal responsibilities. Job analysis is a systematic way of gathering and analyzing information about the content, context, and human requirements of jobs. The decision about whether to use a task-based or competency-based approach to job analysis is affected by the nature of jobs; however, task-based analysis is likely to remain more widely used because it is the most defensible legally. Implementing your job analysis process is the foundation for what we do in human resource management. Job Analysis is the systematic process of identifying tasks, duties and responsibilities expected to be performed in a job as well as competencies to be successful. The outcome is Job Documentation. A detailed examination of jobs, although necessary, can sometimes be a demanding and disruptive experience for both managers and employees, in part because job analysis can identify the difference between what currently is being performed in a job and what should be done. Job documentation impacts every functional area of human resource management, making job analysis a crucial strategic function of human resource management. A job description identifies a job’s tasks, duties, and responsibilities. It describes what is done, why it is done, where it is done, and, briefly, how it is done. The critical end products of a job analysis are job descriptions, which identify the tasks, duties, and responsibilities of jobs, and job specifications, which list the knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to perform a job satisfactorily.
