The Leader Member Exchange Model

02:41
The LPC theory, the path-goal theory, and Vroom’s decision tree approach together redirected the study of leadership. Not surprisingly, then, other situational theories have also been developed. Moreover, there continue to be changes and refinements to the original situational models. The leader-member exchange model (LMX) (of leadership) stresses the importance of variable relationships between supervisors and each of their subordinates. The model suggests that supervisors establish a special relationship with a small number of trusted subordinates referred to as the “in-group.” Subordinates who are not a part of this group are called the out-group, and they receive less of the supervisor’s time and attention. It is not clear how a leader selects members of the in-group, but the decision may be based on personal compatibility and subordinates’ competence. Research has confirmed the existence of ingroups and out-groups. In addition, studies generally have found that in-group members tend to have a higher level of performance and satisfaction than out-group members.

Leader-Member Exchange Theory and Organizational Behavior | Explaining Routinization - #63

04:25
Business 101: Principles of Management #63 – Leader-Member Exchange Theory and Organizational Behaviour | Explaining Routinization, in-group and out-group, Leader-member exchange theory is a part of business. Whether we know it or not, it happens all the time. Think about how long you've worked for your manager and how the relationship has evolved. Based on what we've discussed here, are you in the in-group or out-group? The fact is you might not really know, but this theory is very real and occurs in an ongoing basis. When you joined the company, you went through the role-taking portion of this theory, then proceeded to the role-making portion based on your work and how your manager viewed you. Finally, you fell into a routine with your manager that shapes your relationship with him or her. If you pay attention to the phases of this theory and take the time to realize where you are as it relates to the phases, you could potentially move up the ladder at your organization or fix what you might perceive as a bad relationship with your boss. ----------------------------------------------------------------- Presented by: Soumy Nayak | Forever Suspicious Credits: Study.com ----------------------------------------------------------------- Tags: leadership, Leadership in Organizations, A Leader's Role, leader in organisation, Situational Leadership, types of leadership, leader-member exchange theory, Routinization, in-group and out-group, Organizational Behaviour, Leader-Member relationship

Group 6: Leader Membership Exchange Theory

08:54
We created this presentation to help better explain the Leader Member Exchange theory. Leader Member Exchange theory, also referred to as LMX, describes the three step process of building within a new team. First step in the process is Role Taking. This is where members are assigned to a team and talents and abilities. Once that's established the leader will assign task that best fits the individual's talent. The second process in the LMX Theory is Role Making. In the Role Making process, there is a negotiation between the leader and member in which the role is constructed for the member. In this process, trust building is crucial. If there is any disloyalty in this process it may instantly place this member into the out-group. The final process in the LMX Theory is routinization. This is the open-ended social interaction between the leader and member. This along with the second process develops the in-groups and out-groups. In our videos we explain and demonstrate the differences between the 2 groups and the benefits of joining the in-group. Thanks for watching.

The Situational Leadership Theory (There is no one-size-fits-all-model, the leader must adapt) 6. The Contingency Theory (There is no one-size-fits-all-model, choose an appropriate leader) 7. Transactional Leadership Theory (People follow leaders based on 'transactions' - a mix of rewards, incentives and punishments. A quid pro quo approach) 8. Transformational Leadership Theory (Leaders are gaining the commitment of their employees by inspiring, encouraging and caring for their followers) 9. Leader-Member Exchange Theory (similar to transactional theory, but stresses the presence of an ingroup and outgroup). 10.
