Useful Language Learning Techniques - Conversation Exchange

05:10
Visit https://www.LingQ.com My Blog: http://blog.thelinguist.com/ My Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/lingosteve My Twitter: https://twitter.com/lingosteve Follow the new LingQ channel: https://goo.gl/WVnzRS Follow "Steve's Cafe" Channel: http://www.youtube.com/c/SteveKaufmann Transcript: Hi there, Steve Kaufmann. Today I want to talk about conversation exchanges and language exchanges via the internet. It’s something available to us today that wasn’t available when I started learning languages. It’s amazing. By the way, do you like my Japanese T-shirt? We had a team of Old Timer Hockey players from Japan visit with us and we all got a nice T-shirt. When I think back 50 years ago when I was studying Chinese the idea that I could just get online and talk to someone through some magic computer, I mean can you imagine? Fifty years ago it was just inconceivable that you could do this and nowadays there are a number of sites which offer the opportunity to connect with teachers. Some are free; in other words, just a pure language exchange or conversation exchange. Some of them you hire a teacher or someone to speak to. I can only talk about my experience which is limited to italki, which I have found to be very good. We have a similar function at LingQ, but we don’t have as many tutors as italki. In many ways, I don’t think we do it as well. Some parts of it I think we do better, but when I can find a tutor at LingQ I use a tutor at LingQ otherwise I’ll go to italki. The idea that you can connect with people anywhere in the world who speak the language that you’re speaking, wow! Some words of caution. Personally, and I’ve said this before, until I have a certain level in the language I don’t enjoy the language exchange or conversation exchange because I want to make sure what the person is saying. That’s absolutely number one. Even if I can’t express myself well, I want to understand what the other person is saying and (B) I want to be able to say something in the language because it actually is quite stressful. Even when we’re speaking well, it’s a more stressful way to communicate with someone than sitting with them across a table. It is more stressful. I find that it’s a little bit more exhausting. I should say I have been speaking now. I’ve started speaking with a Ukrainian tutor twice a week and I still have my Russian tutor that I speak to and at the end of an hour I’m kind of exhausted. Now, in order to speak for an hour you have to be at a certain level. Very often, I’ll start at 15 minutes or half an hour and then as I progress I’ll get up to an hour. As I say, it is a little bit stressful, but it’s certainly something to do. Even though I’m a proponent of input-based learning and I’ve spent most of my time and I still do. For example, with my Ukrainian I speak two hours a week, but I’m constantly reading. I’m reading now on Ukrainian history, listening to Ukrainian history, listening to Hora Más Que radio. So input is king, but the output is necessary and these conversation exchange and language exchange sites like italki and what we have at LingQ are a very good way of getting that output experience. As an example of how that works, I’m going to follow this up with a video where I spoke to someone from Russia who commented on one of my YouTube videos that he’s learning Japanese and could we talk a bit about learning Japanese. So what follows here is a separate video. It’s quite long because it’s very difficult to keep these things short, but we speak in three languages, English, Russian and Japanese and we talk, mostly, about learning Japanese. The first 12-13 minutes are in English, then another seven-eight or however many minutes in Russian and we end up in Japanese. What is very interesting in this video, if you have the patience to follow it, is I’ve been speaking Ukrainian and mostly listening to Ukrainian, then I had an hour of Russian with my Russian tutor, this then was followed by speaking to this Denny in Moscow and even though my Japanese is stronger than my Russian I couldn’t get my brain out of Russian. I really struggled to switch over to Japanese and it’s the first time I’ve had that difficulty. Normally, I can move quite easily. Maybe it’s because I’d just had that hour of Russian beforehand and because I find the language exchange via Skype on the computer is a little more stressful than just a casual conversation. I will be interested in hearing from you, bye for now.

OUINO™ Language Tips: Using Online Language Exchange to Practice Your Speaking Skills

05:05
If you don't have access to native speakers in your area, one of the best ways to practice your speaking skills is to connect with speakers from all over the world on the internet. Having online conversations is a fantastic way to improve your skills and it's accessible to anyone with a reliable internet connection. As you speak to people across the globe, you will learn a lot about their culture and talk about things that you normally wouldn't with local people. For example, if you live in northern areas of the world, you may be fed up with all the snow you have to shovel out of your entry way and your pride may still hurt from that time you fell on the ice with your grocery bags, but these things could be fascinating for people who've never seen snow in their entire lives. Cold certainly doesn't have the same meaning for someone who lives close to the equator and someone who lives closer to Santa Claus. All these differences are fascinating and can spark great conversations. There are basically two main categories of websites to practice your speaking skills online; language exchange and personal teachers. Both options are great and have their pros and cons. In this post, we will talk about using language exchange websites to improve your speaking skills. In previous posts, we briefly mentioned language exchange as a great way to learn languages. A quick Google search will give you several websites to choose from. One of the best things you can do is to find friends and also add them to a social network you both use often. After that, you can easily arrange video chat sessions whenever both of you have some free time. Truly becoming friends with them is ideal, you can learn each other's language and you can grow together. You should aim to improve the depth of the conversation every time. It's nice to find people who are at an equivalent skill level; this creates the best mutual exchange possible. Starting from scratch with someone new every time can also work, but it's often more enjoyable and convenient to stay in touch with the people you connect with. Every time you find a new conversation partner, it's also an opportunity of making a new friend. Just keep in mind that you need to understand their skill level, know the way they like to learn, and get comfortable with this new person. Once you have great friends on your favorite social network, you can have many conversations a week with people you find interesting. There are two main advantages to language exchange compared to personal teachers. First, most of them are completely free, and you can easily relate to the other person because they are in a similar situation. They are learning, and willing to help you. The mutual benefit is great, and helping someone else increases your confidence. You're an expert in your own language, and they are experts in their native tongue. Together, you can both become experts in your mutual languages. Now, you might wonder: “But if we don't speak the same language, how can we have conversations together?”. Well, there are a few ways to go about it. In language exchange, you can decide to speak your new language, and they can reply in English. This is a valid option and it will get you the most spoken practice for your time, but it can be difficult for your mind to really switch to your target language. When someone speaks English to you, your instinct will be to reply in English. Try to avoid this. Remember the purpose of the exercise and do your best to only speak in your new language. If you are able to have good conversations by listening in one language and speaking in another, go for it. The second option is to take turns; you can alternate the language of the sessions, or split the time in half. Both of you could speak English for a certain amount of time, and you can both switch to your new language the next time you speak together. This gives you the opportunity to practice listening at the same time and really lets your mind switch to the other language. Obviously, this has the downside of spending only half the time practicing your target language, but it can be gratifying to help someone else. There are no hard-and-fast rules for language exchange to work, but try to avoid each speaking your own language. This is not very effective to practice your speaking skills. Sure, it'll practice your listening skills, but there are a lot of easier and more convenient methods to train your ear to the language. Get as much spoken practice in your new language as you can get from each conversation. If you are not interested in exchanging time with someone and prefer to pay for the other person's time, there are also countless personal teachers available on the web. We will talk about this in detail in the next post.

Learning Korean by Doing Language Exchange with HelloTalk - Review & Tips for Using HelloTalk

12:22
FULL DISCLOSURE: I have been meaning to make a video about HelloTalk for a long time now, but I wanted to do it right with screenshots showing how to do things. Coincidentally, someone from HelloTalk recently contacted me and said that they need more Korean learners, like yourself, and asked me to make a video about the app, so I did! This is not a sponsored video and I am not in affiliation with HelloTalk at all. I honestly just love the app so much that I wanted to help them out (they are still a small startup) and I want others to benefit from using it too! I also noticed from talking to a lot of people about the app that they have had some strange encounters with other "language learners." I have included some tips in the video for how to hide yourself from search and retain control over who you converse with. I also have some tips for how to get the exchange going and keep it going. If you are learning Korean, then this app will be of great help to you! There are a lot of Korean people anxious to learn English and help you learn Korean. Korean Language Exchange PROBLEMS | Tips for Language Exchange

07:11
Let’s talk about Korean language exchange. Have you ever tried language exchange with a native Korean? If so, was it a group meetup, a one-on-one exchange, or an online exchange (voice chat and texting)? While practicing Korean with native speakers is definitely useful and necessary to improve your Korean, it’s also not without its difficulties and problems. I talked with SpongeMind TV and Motivate Korean all about language exchange. Share any problems or questions you have about language exchange in the comments! Want to start learning Korean? You NEED A Language Exchange Partner

05:25
You NEED a Language Exchange Partner if you really want to learn Korean... Plain and simple. Now a language exchange can be a friend but the difference I think is that with a friend, you are simply building a relationship and having fun together. With an exchange partner, you are building a relationship and having fun, yet the primary foundation of your relationship is helping each other improve in the language of study. Often people will say that I speak Korean well because my wife speaks Korean and, although it certainly helps, MOST of my Korean speaking has been with language exchange partners and other friends who are mutually interested in language learning. If you are confused about how to find one or unsure of what to do with a korean language exchange partner, you can ask me or check out this video in which I discuss how to utilize a language exchange partner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cXWBWx40gcU If you wanna chat on instagram, I post useful stuff related to learning Korean on there. http://www.instagram.com/motivatekorean 그리고 한국어 공부랑 관련된 것도 on twitter at http://www.twitter.com/motivatekorean Thanks as always. I appreciate you all.

HiNative: Global Q&A Language Exchange App Review!

11:48
안녕하세용~! Download and check out HiNative for yourself!! Android: https://goo.gl/T8EVLe iOS: https://goo.gl/Eb05vr Web: https://hinative.com Premium: https://hinative.com/premium This week I decided to review a very useful app, which can help you get comfortable with not only Korean but many other languages! This app is called HiNative and it is a global Q&A language exchange service available in over 120 languages! Overall I was very satisfied with this app and I'm quite certain I'll be using it in the future when it comes to deciphering slang words or obscure phrases. *Apparently the ticket feature is only available for those who purchase the premium version. Just found that out :) P. S. Sorry for not uploading a cover this Monday! Those of you who watch Eurovision, please anticipate a few Eurovision covers coming your way in the upcoming weeks. I’ve been listening to some of my favourite Eurovision songs and I didn’t manage to learn them in time for this Monday, sowwy ^^ This is a sponsored video, but all opinions and thoughts are 100% my own :) Facebook: http://goo.gl/hAA5aD Twitter: http://twitter.com/Mangorrita Instagram: http://instagram.com/mangorrrita SoundCloud: http://soundcloud.com/mangorrrita Tumblr: http://goo.gl/LfyXT7
