If you are preparing for your first business analyst job interview or if it’s been awhile since you’ve interviewed, you are probably wondering what questions you can expect and how to answer them. Interviewing for a business analyst job is very different than interviewing for a more technical or domain-focused role. In particular, what’s different is how you answer questions to position your skills to a potential employer. I’ve been on both sides of the business analyst job interview process multiple times – I’ve hired several BAs and, while I was contracting, I interviewed for several BA positions. In this video, I share my insider tips on how to prove you have the business analysis skills your employer wants to see in an interview. And here is the link to the free Interview Prep Guide I mention in the video: http://www.bridging-the-gap.com/prepare-for-ba-job-interview/ Read more on the blog now: http://www.bridging-the-gap.com/ba-interview-sell-skills/

Let's look at the role of the Project Manager verses Business Analyst. Many a times typically in IT organizations what we have seen is that as a people or enterprises do not really emphasis to business analysis (( )). When it comes to validating the requirements the first person who gets selected to perform the role is the person who is sitting on bench. Somebody who is available gets up the requirements without knowing what the right process to do that is. Many times it is the job of the project manager to define about the detailed requirements are, however I insist both of these are very explicit and a very separate roles. So let's look at the responsibilities associated with each one of them.

I've begun a new series on YouTube covering career options in the fields of project management and business analysis. I got this idea since our family recently began planning our daughter's transition to college and discussing with her various career paths she might consider. I thought it would be fun and helpful to lay out my own field for her to review, and to make this information public for the benefit of my younger YouTube viewers who are still trying to sort out which way to go on the road to successful, independent living. I'm calling this series "Diary of a Project Manager" though I plan to cover the related role of Business Analyst, all with a special emphasis on the challenges needs of IT. This very first video in the series attempts to distinguish the two job roles described above, and suggests what skills and personality types might be best suited to each. Special effort is made to keep my own work details out of view in these videos which just focus on the roles, principals, and objectives which lead to projects being completed "on time, within scope, and to specification." Hey, I think I just now wrote the series slogan. :-) ----- My name is Kurt Bell and I am delighted that you have taken some time to share a little of The Good Life with me. Part 6 of “Strategic, Tactical, and Operational Business Analysis” presented to the IIBA® (International Institute of Business Analysis TM) Cincinnati Chapter and Bluegrass IIBA® Chapter on August 16 and 17, 2017 For FREE Business Analyst Training videos visit us at https://businessanalysisexperts.com/product-category/free-business-analysis-training/ PRESENTATION OVERVIEW (all parts) The purpose of business analysis is supposedly to define a future that will allow an organization to achieve specific goals and objectives. In reality, the purpose of business analysis can be anything from mindlessly scribbling down “requirements” to predicting the future of the known universe. Although often married to IT (Information Technology), business analysis is a fundamental business process regardless which organizational unit performs it. Because it defines the interface between people and technology, it is by nature complex. Based on experience gained in working with hundreds of organizations of various sizes world-wide, we identify distinct differences in business analysis as practiced at three levels. In a nutshell, Strategic Business Analysis identifies opportunities for improvement. Tactical Business Analysis flushes out the details of defined projects or initiatives. Operational Business Analysis deals with the evolving daily changes in the life of any change process. Defined thusly, these could be three different careers although they share a great deal of common techniques. As the business analyst, you need to be aware of the level at which you are working to morph the techniques for maximum returns. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN: 1. Define strategic, tactical, and operational business analysis audiences, actions, and results 2. Recognize how to leverage the distinction to further your business analysis career 3. Discuss what it means for the future of the business analysis profession TARGET AUDIENCE Project Business Analysts Enterprise Business Analysts Business Systems Analysts Requirements Engineers Business and Solution Architects Business Relationship Managers Project Managers Managers of Business Analysts IT Managers BACoE and PMO Directors PRESENTED BY: Tom Hathaway, Founder and Managing Member of BA-Experts Tom has over 30 years of experience as a practitioner and instructor in the information technology and business analysis fields. Today we’re going to answer a question that comes up quite often, and that’s what technical skills a business analyst needs to be well-positioned in the job market and to be able to have detailed discussions with technical professionals. While it’s important that a business analyst has a conceptual technical understanding as it helps you analyze the problem to be solved and communicate with technical stakeholders, you don’t need to be able to write code or run database queries. In this video, I share the technical skills you do need to know and how they will help you position yourself more strongly in the job market and hold up your side of the conversation with developers. Interested in becoming a Business Analyst? Want to know more about what the Business Analyst job entails? Maybe you just want to know what it is exactly that a Business Analyst actually does. Check out our chat with Cora to see if it's the career for you. For more information on other careers and day in the life videos, check https://studentedge.org Transcript Ok so let's say you've got a business idea what you want to start a shop that sells pyjamas to turtles. What's the first thing you're gonna do? Buy whole bunch of turtles and fabric right? No. You need a business plan, a business model, a whole bunch of processes and systems just to make sure the whole thing run smoothly and who's going to help you with all this stuff? A business analyst. So let's go find one now to see if i can make millions of turtle pyjamas. Got a pretty good feeling about this one. A business analyst is someone that looks at how a new or existing business works. They look at its structures, its model, design processes and systems in order to achieve the goal the company are after. Now I've got a few business ideas so today we're chatting to Cora Stapleton BA manager at BT financial group to see if she can help me out. Well what exactly is a business analyst? Okay the business analyst is somebody that actually has the business do their business better. They understand the business and then from that they're able to actually help the business to take advantage of opportunities or solve some of the business problems that are facing that business. And so is that one kind of business analyst for all businesses or are there different kinds? Ok so there are some generic business analysis skills that can cut across all all facets of our business analysis. At times you get somebody who will specialize in technology and so they will do business systems analysis, other times you have people that are really close to the operational business and so they're doing business process and analysis. Cool, and so why did you become a business analyst? Well I enjoy working with people and i enjoy problem solving and that really kind of comes together for you know in business analysis where you have both the analytical side of problem-solving coupled with actually you know working with people and understanding kind of people what drives them you know what's important to them. Cool, and so what's the hardest part of the job? It's where things get de-prioritized that are important to people, where they had an expectation that something's going to happen and the funding runs out or we can't do it or we're downsizing an organization and it's got an impact on people's lives. Ok so let's say I want to start a business and I come to you, what's the first thing you do? Well I try to understand your drivers like what are you trying to achieve with that business, what what service or product are you trying to offer to people so we'll start off with understanding that and then understanding what is it going to take for you to actually get this business set up, where going to get funding from and then what are you expecting to make from it. Well now I think it's time for the edge you ready? Yeah. Okay so what characteristics does someone need to be a business analyst? Ok they need to have very strong problem-solving skills because that's basically what they do is the problem solving, but they also do need to have that engagement with people to be able to get information from people and to be able to put that together and bring it back to people so that they can clearly understand what they're gonna get. Okay and so if you could list from school to today to get to where you are what steps to take? Ok well starting in high school I would say and getting involved with developing your English that will actually be really good for communication that you need to have to interact with people and then build up that analytical capabilities and then moving on from there to actually do a degree in the IT type of qualification or psychology and then beyond that getting work experience like understanding kind of working within a business. And if you could end up where you are today but have done one thing differently what would that have been? I probably would have connected in with the professional body earlier than I have, I really only connected in within the last 4 or 5 years in into the professional body but if i had had that available to me and had been aware of that earlier i think I would have been able to progress my career a lot quicker. Well if you're creative, a people person and interested in business then maybe business analyst is the career for you and remember whatever stage reading your career you can visit the Career Centre website for investigation, exploration and planning your next step. Ah, I forgot to ask about the turtle pyjamas!

ZACH DE GREGORIO, CPA www.WolvesAndFinance.com Business Analysis is a growing field that is becoming more and more important. The primary reason for this is that today there is an enormous amount of data. There is so much data that we have trouble understanding it all. So in recent years there has been a growing emphasis on analysis. Business analysis is a set of tools and techniques to evaluate data and improve business systems. This is actually a skill you can develop in your business that can create tremendous value. I want to expand on this definition so you understand how this fits into the context of accounting. You can break accounting into three areas: Process, Reports, Analysis. 1. Process deals with the basic accounting tasks. For example, when you purchase something there is a process to create a Purchase Order and send payment. 2. Reports take the data from your accounting processes and summarizes the data. Your financial statements is a report of all the accounting processes during that period. 3. Analysis is used to interpret and communicate information from reports. Analysis takes your financial statement, determines what it means, and uses that information for strategic decisions. There are a couple of useful things to understand here. Each item builds on the previous item. You cannot perform analysis without reports, and you cannot have reports without good processes. Different businesses are going to need to focus on different things. You might need to focus on getting good accounting processes in place. Once you have good processes, you can focus on reports. Once you have reports, you can start building the skillset for analysis. If you are in accounting, developing a skill in analysis will be very helpful in your career, because it is so valuable for a business. Let me explain what is happening on a practical level. If you are running an organization, you spend a lot of time solving problems. If your employees are operating at the process level, where they are only focused on executing a process, whenever something happens that does not fit the process, it becomes a problem. The employee then sends the problem up to the boss to solve. This eats up a lot of time, because then the boss ends up spending a lot of time solving problems, when they should be spending their time performing higher level activities like setting the direction of the business. The ideal situation is for employees to bring the boss solutions, but that requires analysis. Imagine if all your employees, not only performed the process, but also generated reports and performed analysis on how to improve the business. Instead of bringing the boss problems, they would bring solutions, and all the boss has to do is sign their approval. That is why analysis is incredibly valuable and can supercharge a business and your career. Will you be expected to hit the ground running, and if so, what does that mean? • If you are learning the role from scratch, how do you make sure that you are the best BA you can be and build up your confidence? • How do you hone your skills to the maximum, to make sure you keep the job or turn what might be a temporary role into a permanent position? • Or, simply put, how do you establish a solid foundation from the get-go? Getting a solid start as a business analyst is what we’re talking about in this video.
