Launch of the 2016 Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report

58:47
Despite relatively robust economic performance in many Asia-Pacific countries and the region retaining its position as the largest exporter in the world, merchandise and services export growth have declined in the past year, says the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) in its latest report. The Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report 2016 further highlights a phenomenal reduction in the region’s share of global foreign direct investment over the same period. The Asia-Pacific Trade and Investment Report is an annual publication of ESCAP which provides independent analyses of regional trends and developments related to trade, foreign direct investment, trade facilitation and policy measures, value chains and more. The report also offers insights into the impacts of these recent and emerging developments on countries’ abilities to meet the challenges of achieving inclusive and sustainable development. The report is available for download from the ESCAP website at: http://www.unescap.org/

What will be the future of Asia Pacific economic integration following the US withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership? What local and regional impacts will this withdrawal have for the United States on foreign direct investment and trade from Asia?

Japan PM Abe opens Asia-Pacific trade meeting

01:30
(1 Jul 2018) Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Sunday called for an early conclusion of a regional trade pact that ensures free and rules-based commerce. Abe was speaking at the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) meeting in Tokyo, which was attended by trade ministers from 16 Asian countries. Japan co-chairs RCEP with Singapore, and seeks to take leadership in shaping the pact as an alternative to a Pacific Rim free-trade grouping that US President Donald Trump has abandoned. Japan says it hopes to conclude the pact by the end of 2018. But members of the initiative, launched in 2013, still struggle with issues including tariffs, trade in services and investment rules. Furthermore, Japan remains cautious about China's influence. The trade group includes Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand, India and South Korea. Dilemmas of a trading nation: Japan and the United States in the evolving Asia-Pacific order

01:24:15
On June 26, Mireya Solís, senior fellow and Philip Knight Chair in Japan Studies with the Center for East Asia Policy Studies, discussed her new book, “Dilemmas of a Trading Nation: Japan and the United States in the Evolving Asia-Pacific Order,” which examines the complex navigation required by Japan and the United States to achieve their desired goals and forge their way forward as trading nations. Solís argues that if Tokyo and Washington do not succeed in tackling their defining trade dilemmas of decisiveness, reform, and internationalism, they risk not only their ability to upgrade international economic rules but the reaffirmation of the rules-based international order. https://www.brookings.edu/events/dilemmas-of-a-trading-nation-japan-and-the-united-states-in-the-evolving-asia-pacific-order/ Subscribe! http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=BrookingsInstitution Follow Brookings on social media! Jonathan Berkshire Miller: Japan and the Indo-Pacific Region

44:04
Geopolitical change in Asia presents serious security and economic challenges to Japan and its most important ally the United States. North Korea will soon have the capacity to make a nuclear strike on the US, China is expanding its influence in the South China Sea through island building and more broadly throughout Asia and beyond through its One Belt, One Road initiative, and America’s withdrawal from TPP has undermined efforts to update trade and investment rules to promote more open markets for Japanese and American business. President Trump and PM Abe broached a new Indo-Pacific Initiative when they met in November 2017, but provided few details. What is the new Indo-Pacific initiative? How will Japan respond to these challenges and what role will the US-Japan alliance play? Jonathan Berkshire Miller, Senior Visiting Fellow with the Japan Institute of International Affairs, will join us to discuss the dynamics in the East Asia region and Japan's approach to the Indo-Pacific region, a subject that has great significance for the US and for Bay Area companies doing business throughout Asia. SPEAKER: Jonathan Berkshire Miller Senior Visiting Fellow, Japan Institute of International Affairs MODERATOR: C.
