What Is Theater? Crash Course Theater #1

14:07
Welcome to Crash Course Theater with Mike Rugnetta! In this, our inaugural week, we're going to ask the two classic questions about theater. 1.What is theater? And 2. Is it spelled -re or -er? Well, there's a clue to question two in the title of the video. The first question is a little trickier. We'll look at some of the historical definitions of theater, and investigate some of the ways people have thought about theater in different times and places in the world. Crash Course is on Patreon! Postdramatic Theatre and Postmodern Theatre: WTF? An introduction to Hans Theis Lehmann

05:45
A brief introduction to postdramatic and postmodern theatre as first theorised by Hans Theis Lehmann. The first in a series in which I briefly (and, hopefully, accessibly) introduce some core academic concepts and ideas. In this first episode, I explain the scholarship of Han-Thies Lehmann as well as the theatre of Martin Crimp, Sarah Kane, Caryl Churchill, Forced Entertainment, Ontroerend Goed and GETINTHEBACKOFTHEVAN. If you've enjoyed this video then please do check out the rest of my channel. I generally put out new videos every Tuesday and Friday discussing theatre and playwriting from the perspective of an aspirant and (some might say) emerging playwright, theatre maker and academic. Working in Theatre: Arts Educator

03:25
We're continuing our new web series: Working in Theatre, which offers a glimpse into the many different jobs in the field—in the words of the people who do them. Camille Schenkkan’s job is to get people excited about jobs like hers, and those of all her colleagues and collaborators. And since she loves her job (Program Manager for Next Generation Initiatives at Center Theatre Group) and her field (theatre), she doesn’t have a whole lot of trouble being convincing. In this installment of our Working in Theatre web series, Camille discusses how she introduces students to the many different jobs and career paths in the theatre world, the day-to-day duties of her own gig, and why you shouldn’t necessarily listen when people tell you to find a better-paying, more stable line of work. "Clowns fall down so we don't have to." An ancient form of theatrics rooted in physical comedy, clowning transcends language and cultural barriers by finding the absurd in the everyday. Alison Friedman - China's Performing Arts in the 21st Century

39:50
Covering an historic arc that reaches from the Cultural Revolution to the 2008 Olympic Games, Alison Friedman looks at how China is searching for a new globalized contemporary identity through music, dance and theater. Examples of artists navigating this search include world-famous classical musicians like Lang Lang and Tan Dun as well as less well-known underground 'Chinese indie' musicians such as Xiao He and the performing artist collective ZuHe Niao. Ms. Friedman also addresses how performing artists are combining traditional Chinese forms with new influences from the west -- or not! -- as well as the role of international partners in the field, including festivals, collaborators, funding bodies, and Embassies, and how the international community is affecting China's contemporary performing arts scene, for better or worse (in sickness and in health....) Alison M. Friedman is the founding director of Ping Pong Productions, a producing and consulting organization headquartered in Beijing with the mission of cultural diplomacy. Clients include TAO Dance Theater, Mark Morris Dance Group, the U.S Embassy in China, the British Council, Guangzhou Municipal Bureau of Culture, and Los Angeles Theatre Works. As director of Ping Pong Productions, Ms. Friedman works closely with Chinese and international governments and arts organizations to facilitate collaborations, tours, and lasting artistic relationships. Fluent in Mandarin Chinese and political negotiations, Ms. Friedman has worked in the performing arts in China for more than a decade. She served as international director of the Beijing Modern Dance Company, general manager of Oscar-winning composer Tan Dun's company Parnassus Productions, Inc., and as a producer and host on Chinese national radio and television programs. Ms. Friedman graduated Phi Beta Kappa/magna cum laude from Brown University with a degree in Chinese Literature/Literary Translation. She was a Fulbright fellow to China, an arts management fellow at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C., and a fellow of the International Society for the Performing Arts. An expert in China's developing arts market, Ms. Friedman lectures internationally in both English and Mandarin Chinese, including keynotes at the National Committee on US-China Relations, Asia Society, Brown University, People's University of China, China International Performing Arts Fair Guangzhou, Fulbright Association 31st Annual Conference, and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. She has contributed articles and chapters to journals and collections published in the United States, China, and Europe. Ms. Friedman has been cited as an expert on Chinese performing arts by the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, and China Daily.

Jacques Arpin - Body and Performance in Theater Anthropology and other Art Forms (ASI 2015)

24:27
Body and Performance in Theater Anthropology and other Art Forms: Clinical Applications in Cultural Psychiatry Jacques Arpin, Geneva What can I, a healer, learn from the arts, traditions and techniques? How can I apply such learning to my clinical work in medical anthropology and cultural psychiatry? I put “body” at the centre of the crossroads of health, culture and performance. The latter concerns all art forms relevant to the narration and the dramaturgy of patients’ case-history making. It is also helpful in the elaboration of various forms of therapies, including somatic medicine. We can thus improve and develop these medical actions with methodologies borrowed from the arts: learning, training, practicing, performing and transmitting. Theater anthropology is the study of the performer in a situation of performance. It considers traditions and techniques; the body as a vehicle, the body as a tool. Through exercises and training methods, this body will eventually produce narrative elements and express segments of stories. These I can then edit, using methods of montage, to finally make sense of the whole dramaturgy. There is a montage of the director and a montage of the actor, both of which will, at one point, be confronted with the montage of the spectator. Applications to our fields of professional actions are convenient and useful. The patient/healer work parallels that of the actor/director interactive strategies and methods. The healer, here the cultural psychiatrist, becomes the director of the patient’s dramaturgy, as expressed in the case-history making and in the course of the psychotherapy. The same can apply to the clinical situations seen in surgery, internal medicine et al. Theater anthropology and the performance studies have developed active networks, the International School of Theater Anthropology (ISTA) and the Performance Studies international (PSi), comparable to our own SSPC, TS and WACP. My Masters of Their Conditions project began 30 years ago. Three stepping-stone articles have been published in TP. The focus is on the body in its clinical, cultural and performing forms: (1) the performance of health, illness and care - introducing theater anthropology; (2) narration in intercultural theater and the visual arts - bringing patients on stage; (3) the actor’s score and its applications to the patient’s score - a collaboration with actors of the Odin Teatret, founded by Eugenio Barba who also created ISTA. I am currently working on the next stage of the project: body modifications in the era of the new media (Internet, communication, technologies of the image).
