Swimbaits can be used across the water column for catching bass, under docks, through grass, along rip rap, etc. Swimbaits are lure that is so useful in every situation because it is the realistic to what bass feed on Shad, Perch, Bluegill, etc. I breakdown swimbaits on a lake by taking a 3 step approach to create a natural Presentation:
1.) What am I imitating?
2) What is the size of bait I am imitating?
3.) What type of cover am I fishing?
Ex.) If I am imitating a shad I will use a shad colored swimbait, If the shad are 4 to 5 inches long I will use a 4 to 5 inch swimbait, and if the cover is short grass within open water I will rig the swimbait on a swimbait jig head if the grass or cover is close to the surface and the hook is not coming through the cover naturally I will go to a keel style weighted swimbait hook to create a natural presentation.
It is all about the presenting the bait naturally.....
