Learn a North Indian Song: Jago Mohan Pyare

09:49
This is an instructional video designed for world music / ethnomusicology classes. It's purpose is to teach a north Indian classical song to students who are not necessarily students of Indian music. One will note that this is an Indian song in Western musical notation as well as traditional Indian (Bhatkhande) notation. A few words are in order concerning the motivation for this film. I have been in touch with Dr. Rose Lang at the University of Houston. She was requesting an Indian song to teach her students as part of her world music / ethnomusicology course. It suddenly dawned upon me that I could think of absolutely nothing that would be appropriate. This is not to say that there are not any easy beginner songs; obviously there are. But all of the beginner songs are oriented toward Indian students who are engaged in the study of Indian music. Unfortunately the average non-Indian who is enrolled in the typical ethnomusicology / world music course is a very different type of person. The skill sets are different; the motivation, goals and orientation are all different. More importantly the cultural background is very different. It occurred to me that there was absolutely nothing that would fulfill these very different goals. It seemed clear that if nothing existed, then it was high time that Chandra and I create something. Naturally, if we create something that will satisfy Dr. Lang's requirements, there would be similar requirements for other classes around the US, and many many parts of the rest of the world. Obviously YouTube was the medium to make this information available. As one goes through this film there are a number of questions which will arise. Here are some links that will provide further information on the subject: http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/ - general overview of north Indian classical music. http://www.chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/raga.html - general overview of the melodic form known as the rag. http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/tala.html - general overview of the rhythmic form known as the tal. http://chandrakantha.com/articles/indian_music/gayaki.html - Introduction to North Indian vocal music. http://chandrakantha.com/raga_raag/bhairav/bhairav.html - Introduction to rag Bhairav.

Joe McKenna - The Passenger (Zodiac Sessions, Ireland)

04:07
Acoustic Compilation CD available to buy from Website. http://www.TheZodiacSessions.com http://www.myspace.com/thezodiacsessions http://www.youtube.com/thezodiacsessions http://www.bebo.com/thezodiacsessions Joe McKenna playing "The Passenger" at The Zodiac Sessions open mic night, Dublin, Ireland. JOE MCKENNA Joe Mckenna is a 28 year old irsh singer/songwriter original from Belfast but now living in Dublin. Having began teaching himself music at 16 Joe gradually grew in ability and in the summer of 2000 set off for New york with his bag, notebook and guitar. While there Joe began his live career playing the cafes and bars of the east and greenwich village. No sooner had that beagn than Joe was signed up by a production company and paraded before major labels as the next big thing. But the demographic contstraints of the music business and Joe's inherent need to just write songs that where real caused a major split in the company and they parted ways. In the aftermath joe went about recording with friends and then took his journey back to Ireland, where after great success (Solas sessions singer/songwriter of 2004 award, runner up in the Drogheda song contest) he independently released his debut E.P with major help from producer Declan Legge of Big Space Studios in his home town of Belfast. Joe's release was met with great response that included a headline at the Imagine Arts Festival of Waterford and a live session with BBC radio in Belfast aswell as numerous appearances on other Irish radio staions. Now in the process of putting together his album again with Big Space Joe has some very exciting work in the pipeline. So if you like songs that can sway from the dark to the cheesy with alot of soul keep in touch and enjoy the tracks on my space. One Love. http://www.myspace.com/joemckenna

Top 10 Music PR tips for Today's Unsigned Artist

04:45
http://www.youtube.com/user/merubycollins http://cdbaby.com/all/ruby http://www.rubycollins.com http://www.myspace.com/merubycollins http://rubycollins.blogspot.com As an unsigned artist, publicity is a huge driving force when you're looking at success in the music industry. Although it's definitely beneficial to retain a publicist once you have your music career in gear, you can still manage to create a little buzz on your own in the meantime. Below are the top ten tips for generating your own publicity as a music artist. 1. Make sure you have a press kit that includes a well-written bio, an 8X10 photo, CD and contact info. 2. Go local. Local press is by far the easiest press to get. Let them know your story and send in a CD. Shoot for the music editor or columnist and if they don't have one assigned specifically, contact the entertainment editor. 3. Social networking sites are all about music these days. For example, Myspace's reach is incredible for gaining new fans. Where else can you find people to listen to your music in the convenience of their own home? Make sure you are updating your music, adding friends, keeping them all posted, and updating the tour dates. There are magazines on Myspace looking for music to feature all the time. 4. Radio is a great way to share your music with the masses. You don't have to approach the big ones—you can see success with air play on smaller stations as well. Send in your CD to local DJs and look up college radio shows nationally and see if they'll spin your music. Online radio is picking up these days too... USA4Real.com is a great option... it doesn't cost much and it gets your music heard. 5. Music licensing is a great way to make money and get publicity. Try contacting some music supervisors on TV shows for a start. Send them an inquiry with your information and a link to your music. If you get placed, you can use it for press—and it becomes a story! 6. Music websites and e-zines are always looking for music to review. Look up their websites and send emails to their editors. Tell them why you're a fit for their magazine and ask if you can send in a CD. Again, try to make contact first... sending in a random package may be useless. 7. Youtube.com and Stickam.com are wonderful outlets to share your music. You can even upload your music videos and video tips for other artists now at Getsigned.com. Just Upload your videos HERE and they'll be on the site in a couple of weeks when the new site re-launches! When done right, you can really start gaining a fan base. Try to do something charismatic and original. Reaching out to people online can do wonders. Create a music video, a video blog, sing an acoustic set, take a stab at some comedy-- anything... Just remember, first impressions are everything. 8. Be philanthropic. Charity does wonders for publicity outreach. Find something you believe in and offer to play at their event or donate proceeds to their cause. Not only does it get you out there and give you a story angle... but it feels good to help out. 9. Send your CDs to appropriate magazines for your music's genre. Make sure you call ahead and find out the right contact, unsolicited packages get lost in the shuffle. A good rule of thumb is to look up specific writers you feel would enjoy your music and find out how to reach them. 10. Try to book shows in different towns, that way you can easily label the cluster of shows as a tour and contact local newspapers and radio stations and offer them merch in exchange for promotions/articles. Note that PR is about being smart and creative. It's about finding a reason for people to care about you and your music. Sure, great music and a good look are helpful, but you also need to reach out to the public and come up with stories. Think outside of the box and you'll really benefit from the results in no time. Good luck!

Hot Food - Kids' Poems and Stories With Michael Rosen

01:03
Hot Food - Read by Michael Rosen fro The Hypnotiser You can browse and buy Michael Rosen Books here: http://bit.ly/MichaelRosenBooks "I wrote a book of poems for children called 'The Hypnotiser' some years ago and then it went out of print. I couldn't get anyone to reprint it, so I asked my son Joe to film me performing the book." - Michael Rosen Check out Michael's website for news, updates and fun. https://www.michaelrosen.co.uk Go behind the scenes and see how our videos are made: https://workbyjoe.wordpress.com/2015/... Who is Michael Rosen? My first book for children was called Mind Your Own Business and it came out in 1974. Quentin Blake did wonderful line drawings for it. Ever since then, I’ve been doing these things: Writing books Writing articles for newspapers and magazines Going to schools, libraries and theatres and performing the poems in my books Helping children write poems and stories Making radio programmes, mostly about words, language or books Appearing on TV, either reading books, or talking about books Teaching at universities about children’s literature Running workshops for teachers about poetry In any week, I might be doing all of these things! To tell the truth, I don’t really know what I’m doing tomorrow, unless I look in my diary to see. Review Right class 6, RIGHT CLASS 6, I'm talking, I'm talking, I want complete quiet and that includes you, David Alexander, yes you...' 'The Outing', by Michael Rosen, just one of the fantastic and hilarious poems from his short story and poetry collection The Hypnotiser. This particular poem was read to me as a young child in primary school time and time again. Each time the names in the poem were changed to the names of the pupils in my class. It never got old, or less hilarious and I wouldn't hesitate in reading this to my future classes during my teaching career. Other great poems from this collection include 'The Car Trip'; a highlight of the sibling chaos that goes on in the back of the car when Mum is driving: 'He started it. I didn't. He started it...', 'Tomato 1'; the gruelling ordeal of being given a tomato to eat by your mother and you simply just hate tomatoes, and 'Tidy Your Room'; every child's nightmare. Each and every poem and short story relates to children through typical experiences that most would have endured. This book enlightens children's love and enthusiasm for poetry, an almost forgotten about genre for most children; a runner up to fiction books. This book can have many uses in the classroom; appropriate for children in Key Stage Two it can be read by the teacher at the end of the day during story time, like in my own experience at primary school. Or, during a poetry topic in Literacy, this book could model fun, interesting, age appropriate poetry that will inspire children to write their own poems. Likewise for shared reading; this book would be fantastic to put under the visualiser and look through with the class at the how poems are written, their structure, do they rhyme? do they tell a story? All sorts of things can be addressed with the class as a whole. This book needs to be shown to children, whether at school on the class bookshelf, or online where you can find video clips of Michael Rosen performing these poems; a great filler for those odd five minutes that arise during the busy school day. A Must read, not just for children but teachers as well! #Michael Rosen #Kids #Poetry

http://www.TheZodiacSessions.com http://www.myspace.com/thezodiacsessions http://www.youtube.com/thezodiacsessions http://www.bebo.com/thezodiacsessions Acoustic Compilation CD available to buy from Website. Joe McKenna playing "The Saviour" at The Zodiac Sessions open mic night, Dublin, Ireland.

Veselin Stojanov Nocturno

Veselin Stojanov (1902 - 1969), Bulgarian composer, pianist, conductor, public figure. Veselin Stoyanov is son of Anastas Stoyanov and brother of Andrey Stoyanov. He belongs to the second generation of Bulgarian composers. He was among the founders of the Contemporary Music Society in 1933 (which later became the Union of Bulgarian Composers). He graduated from the State Academy of Music in 1926 majoring in Piano under his brother. The same year he enrolled at the Vienna Hochschule fьr Musik studying Piano with Professor V. Ebenstein and Composition with Professor F. Schmidt. He took private classes of Piano with P. de Kohn and Orchestration with Wunderer. Upon his return to Bulgaria he taught Piano and Theory of Music (1931-37). He performed as a pianist and conductor. In 1937 he joined the staff of the State Academy of Music teaching music theory subjects. In 1945 he was appointed Professor of Composition and Music Forms. He also was elected Dean of the Music Theory Faculty (1952) and Rector of the State Academy of Music (1956-1962). He served as director of the Sofia Opera (1953-54). He composed in a variety of genres with an inclination to instrumental large-scale forces and through-composed forms sustained by leitmotif technique, rich harmony and sumptuous even exotically sounding orchestration. A national stamp to this style was provided by use of modal colouring or irregular time beats characteristic for the Bulgarian traditional music but without quoting. He composed three operas, one ballet; symphony and chamber music; three concertos for piano and orchestra; choral, solo and mass songs; film music, etc. A few of his works won recognition as bright examples of Bulgarian music and were internationally acclaimed. Among them one might mention his grotesque suite Bay Ganyu after Aleko Konstantinov (1941), his Rhapsody (1956) or his Festival Overture (1959); the instrumental concertos, his Piano Sonata and Piano Suite composed in the 1930s, his Sonata for violin and piano, the String Quartets, etc. He wrote and published articles on music aesthetics, music forms and contemporary Bulgarian music. The liric NOCTURNO is middle part from the cycle "Three pieces for piano" (1956). Magnificent, bright music language, near to folk song melodic blilliance, expressive and rich harmony and colorful orchestration. The raised poetic liric is combined with irresistible folk dancing. This recording is from live concert of Bulgarian pianist Veselinka Ivanova in Dartmouth college, NH on 25 February 2004

James Bryan, World Vision, Sing Across The World

03:54
Guitarist Brings Young People Together "Sing across the World" is a global music project launched in November 2007 by award winning songwriter, producer, & guitarist James Bryan, in partnership with World Vision. The project connects a group of Ontario high school music students from Laura Secord Secondary School with youth from a World Vision project in Dominican Republic, and with James' help, to create music together. It was natural that James chose the award winning choir from his former high school Laura Secord in St Catherines, Ontario, to collaborate with a special group of World Vision Youth Ambassadors from the Dominican Republic who happen to have a music group called "4 in 1". Through the power of the internet, and with James assisting as a songwriter/producer, the two groups met online in November, and over several sessions the participants all contributed to creating a song together. Music Crossing Borders On June 4th, 2008, students from a St. Catharines, Ont., high school joined voices with James Bryan in a musical performance that transcends all borders. It was natural that Bryan chose the choir from Laura Secord Secondary School, to collaborate with 4 in 1 from The Dominican, Besides being Bryan's former high school, Laura Secord also has an outstanding music program and an award-winning music teacher, Mr. Dave Sisler. Last November, and with Bryan assisting as songwriter/producer, the two groups met online to write a song together. Two months later, Bryan recorded the Laura Secord students' voices, then travelled to the Dominican Republic to meet with 4 in 1. He delivered recording equipment donated by Yamaha, Long & McQuade, Sennheiser, and Gibson to the World Vision offices and recorded the boys' part of the song. Bryan spent time teaching the boys how to use the equipment to initiate their own music program through World Vision in the Dominican Republic. "Sing Across the World" is the result of a life-long goal of mine: to bring young people together through music to affect positive change in the world," says Bryan.
