It's a crazy ride, but Visa Business helps Braaap's Brad Smith keep up.

01:52
If you're like most business owners, you probably rely on cheques to pay for goods and services far more often than you use business credit or debit cards. As its latest marketing initiative, VISA business cards has produced a series of webumentaries, featuring inspiring Australian entrepreneurs, to explain how a card can provide better cash flow management and more transparent ways to track spending. In it's first clip, VISA puts Braaap founder Brad Smith under the spotlight. You may have heard the name before. Smith was one of Anthill's 30under30 winners in 2010.

There are only two ways to get new clients... just two.

02:10
There are only two ways to get new customers and clients... just two. Here's the first option... OPTION ONE: You can chase them... relentlessly. Of course, this is how most new and small business owners go about client and customer acquisition, every day. They attend networking event after networking event, tossing out business cards like confetti. They book expensive stands at expensive tradeshows, desperately glad-handling passers-by in the hope of harpooning a whale. They spend their mornings 'warm-calling' and their afternoons 'warm-emailing'. Or, worse, COLD-calling and COLD-emailing. Nooooooooo!!! These are all forms of... Outbound Marketing. These are how most new AND seasoned small business owners make a crust. They hustle. And it's very tiring. It's also not scaleable. (This is especially true if you operate in an industry where the revenue model is to trade time for money, ie. Where you charge for your services.) So, what's the second option? That's where you... OPTION TWO: Create an environment where prospective customers and clients come find you! If that sounds like your cup of tea, click the link… http://notsofreakyuniversity.com/webinar-aus And I hope to see you online! Geoff Wilson doesn't make it to Antartica #UNSTOPPABLES

04:57
I met Jeff Wilson moments after a huge defeat. Sixty minutes into our 90 minute flight across the Drake passage, the captain delivered a grim message. The fog had returned. The window had closed. It was no longer safe to land and we would be returning to Punta Arenas. Read the full story here: http://anthillonline.com/business-lessons-antarctica-part-1-recover-kick-nuts

When nature kicks you in the nuts #UNSTOPPABLES

01:08
I was on the first plane to arrive back at Punta Arenas airport. And, despite deep, deep disappointment among the 60 people who travelled with me, a few rallied. And this infected others. And, before long, a plan had been hatched. It was decided that it's always better to stand on the ground and wish that you are in a plane, than sit in a plane and wish that you are on the ground. Large companies spend big bucks on making their organisations look uber-sophisticated and polished. This video, on the other hand, took three minutes and 12 seconds to film and maybe a little less to edit. (Maybe.) It's a very 'lean' debut for a much needed addition to the Queensland startup ecosystem. And that's exactly how it should be.

Building Trust with Julian (The Endless Loop Experiment: Breakfast)

05:37
James Tuckerman is one of Australia's most successful digital publishers. He is best known for launching Anthill Magazine, in 2003, from the spare bedroom of his parents' home. He was then 26 years of age. In 2004 and 2005, he was named Best Small Publisher in Australia by the ABA (now called Publishers Australia). In early 2009, he reinvented the Anthill business model, abandoning its print origins in favour of a 100% digital product. Within six-months, AnthillOnline.com was listed by Nielsen Online Ratings among the Top 50 Business & Finance websites in Australia (http://anthillonline.com/about-us/). Since then, he has launched numerous digital ventures and helped other private companies, large and small, make the transition online (or significantly improve their online outcomes). His latest 'experiment' is taking the techniques he teaches to others and applying them to his most recent venture, Endless Loop Media. In his own words, James is "having a taste of [his] own dog food". http://www.facebook.com/TheEndlessLoopExperiment?sk=info

The most important piece of social media advice... ever?

01:16
When I shot this video, I was angry. Can you tell? You see, a friend of mine was recently convinced by a social media company that she needed to spend $30,000 on an 'engagement strategy' . Yup. $30,000. It was a new business. She'd raised some money from family and friends. And the social media company was persuasive. So, she dropped $30k into this engagement strategy. Can you guess what happened next? First... What the heck is an engagement strategy anyway!? Let's bring this scenario into the real world... beyond social media. Imagine that you run a store selling sporting goods. (For the fun of it, let's also pretend that you're name is Tony... just for fun.) One day, a social media consultant, expert, evangelist, guru, whatever, graces your door step and here's what he promises... "An engagement strategy." You say... "What's that?" He says... "I will create an environment where people will talk about your store, they might even talk to their friends about your store. They might come into your store, and may even pick up some of your equipment... swing a baseball bat or a tennis racket. And, after that, we will encourage them to talk with others about your marvelous goods and share their experiences." You say... "That sounds great. "But I have one more question. "Will any of those people actually come to the counter? "Will any of those people actually buy anything?" Carefully, he replies... "That's not what you'd be paying me for. You'd be buying an Engagement Strategy. My job is to fuel engagement." Now, if you were Tony, that's when you'd usher Monsieur Guru the door (maybe with the tennis racquet). But it actually gets worse... To extend this analogy even further, in the context of a physical store, the counter is just there. It's within arms reach of all the curious patrons. However... When it comes to your social media strategy, if you want one of your 'engaged' fans to actually buy or book time with you, they must first 'leave the store'. They must walk down the 'virtual' street, find you and your counter and, then, commit to becoming your customer or client. Ouch! For example, what if you are a service provider, or a consultant, or work in B2B sales, or offer a complex or big-ticket item, where the deal is struck face-to-face? You need to make meetings happen in the real world! If that's the case, you need to do a LOT more than build engagement! So, what happened to my friend, who spent $30,000? Let's bring this back to her experiences. Her offer involved a $47 a month membership. So, the lifetime value of a customer, if they stick around for 12 months, would be $564. At the end of the campaign, she had secured a whopping 4 customers. Just four. So, in revenue, that's $2,256... if they stick around 12 months. And, to be frank, when I heard this story, I didn't know whether to feel heart-broken or furious. (I mostly felt furious. It was soul-crushing.) That's why I'm hosting this FREE event... http://notsofreakyuniversity.com/webinar-aus-facebook And what's the moral of this story? What's the blindingly obvious business tip? Get them OFF social media. (That's it.) Sure, build the audience. Get them engaged. But always start with the end in mind. Have a plan to get your target audience OFF social media and onto your website, your landing pages, into your database, into your meeting rooms, into your store... into your life and your business! Capiche?
